If we do not test ideas we may as well have none. R ubens 'The Four Philosophers' Peter Paul Rubens stands behind a group seated below a bust of the Roman philosopher, tragedian and statesman Seneca ( . In the group is his much admired brother Philip, who died a couple of years before in 1611 and was one of the great Classicists of his age. Beside him are his teacher, the scholar Justus Lipsius, and another top student Jan Woverius. Francis Bacon 1st Viscount St Alban, BaronVerulam (1561 - 1626) wrote about Bacon's love for his "very effeminate-faced" servants. Bacon's relationships followed the pattern of patron/favourite. More specifically, he had a preference for young Welsh serving-men. He also wrote poetry and plays, and there is still controversy that he co-authored many of Shakespeare's plays, including Hamlet . Bacon was one of the first Englishmen to write an essay on the nature of beauty, and his models were "August Caesar, Titus Vespasianus, Philip Le Bel of France, Edward IV of England, Alcibiades of Athens, and Ismael of Persia who were the most beautiful men of their times"

British philosopher, mathematician and social critic, and one of the most widely read philosophers of the twentieth century. Bertrand Russell was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1950. "The belief that fashion alone should dominate opinion has great advantages. It makes thought unnecessary and puts the highest intelligence within the reach of everyone. It is not difficult to learn the correct use of such words as 'complex,' 'sadism,' 'Oedipus,' 'bourgeois,' 'deviation,' 'left'; and nothing more is needed to make a brilliant writer or talker."

History of Philosophy
The Appeal to Adjustment, 1900's In the 1900's, philosophy went in two directions.
One is based on the development of logic, mathematics, and science
the other, on an increasing concern about humanity
The following three turned there attention to the philosophy of science.
  • Bertrand Arthur William Russell Third Earl Russell 1872-1970 , a British philosopher, mathematician, social critic, and writer who had profound influence on the development of symbolic logic, logical positivism, and the set theory of mathematics . His written works include Principia Mathematica (1910-1913), written with Alfred North Whitehead, and A History of Western Philosophy (1945). He won the 1950 Nobel Prize for literature
  • Alfred North Whitehead 1861-1947 , another British mathematician and philosopher also a founder of mathematical logic , he wrote Principia Mathematica (1910-1913) with Bertrand Russell.
  • F.S.C. Northrop 1893-? , an American philosopher.
The following three rejected traditional philosophic discussions about the nature of reality. They concentrated on

It is clear that thought is not free if the profession of certain opinions make it impossible to earn a living.
Bertrand Russell Skeptical Essays My conclusion is that there is no reason to believe any of the dogmas of traditional theology and, further, that there is no reason to wish that they were true. Man, in so far as he is not subject to natural forces, is free to work out his own destiny. The responsibility is his, and so is the opportunity.

This virtue, though it is underestimated by almost all adherents of any system of dogma, is to my mind of the very greatest social importance and far more likely to benefit the world than Christianity or any other system of organized beliefs.

Extraordinary Jobs for Ordinary People - Online Newsletter Archives - Issue 35 5-26-03 I'm wiped out from working over my newsletter archives and attempting to clean up anything that could get me in trouble. My newsletter subscribers got a list rather than an article yesterday, but that was all my numb fingers and brain could put together for them. It's been coming for a long time, and though it is a pain to implement the corrections, it is a good thing to have more regulation on internet publishers. I'm particularly amazed by the adult sites that manage to do business. There have been really raunchy e-mails coming across that shock ME. What if my kids had been standing near enough to see the screen as those foul photos appeared? Anyway, it was time I tidied up my website, but now I'm wiped. I'm also working on splitting www.KPDavis.com into three sites: SublimeDesigns (don't have the domain name for this yet) for the Web Design and Brochures, Extraordinary-Jobs.com for the newsletter, and WriteConcepts.com for the copywriting. Then what will KPDavis.com do? (Send me suggestions, please! Anything but webcam!) So much to do, so little time...

Neal Stephenson Biography Novels Other Writings Annotations Misc The Store The Logo Bertrand Russell (1872 - 1970) Bertrand Arthur William Russell, the third Earl Russell, was one of the most influential mathematicians, philosophers and logicians working (mostly) in the 20th century, an important political liberal, activist and a popularizer of philosophy. Millions looked up to Russell as a sort of prophet of the creative and rational life; at the same time, his stance on many topics was extremely controversial. He was born in 1872, at the height of Britain's economic and political ascendancy, and died, of influenza, in 1970 when Britain's empire had all but vanished and her power had been drained in two victorious but debilitating world wars. At his death, however, his voice still carried moral authority, for he was one of the world's most influential critics of nuclear weapons and the American war in Vietnam. In 1950, Russell was made Nobel Laureate in Literature "in recognition of his varied and significant writings in which he champions humanitarian ideals and freedom of thought". Russell's philosophical and logical work Logic
In mathematical logic, Russell established Russell's paradox, which exposed an inconsistency in naive set theory and led directly to the creation of modern axiomatic set theory. It also crippled Gottlob Frege's project of reducing mathematics to logic. Nonetheless, Russell defended logicism (the view that mathematics is in some important sense reducible to logic) and attempted this project himself, along with

Bertrand Arthur William Russell
Bertrand Russell was the grandson of Lord John Russell, who had twice served as Prime Minister under Queen Victoria. Educated at first privately, and later at Trinity College, Cambridge, Russell obtained first class degrees both in mathematics and in the moral sciences. Although elected to the Royal Society in 1908, Russell's career at Trinity appeared to come to an end in 1916 when he was convicted and fined for anti-war activities. He was dismissed from the College as a result of the conviction. Two years later Russell was convicted a second time. This time he spent six months in prison. It was while in prison that he wrote his well-received Introduction to Mathematical Philosophy in 1919. He did not return to Trinity until 1944. Married four times and notorious for his many affairs, Russell also ran unsuccessfully for Parliament, in 1907, 1922, and 1923. Together with his second wife, he opened and ran an experimental school during the late 1920s and early 1930s. He became the third Earl Russell upon the death of his brother in 1931. While teaching in the United States in the late 1930s, Russell was offered a teaching appointment at City College, New York. The appointment was revoked following a large number of public protests and a judicial decision, in 1940, which stated that he was morally unfit to teach at the College. Nine years later he was awarded the Order of Merit. He received the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1950.
