Russell, Bertrand Arthur William, 3rd Earl Russell (1872-1970),
British philosopher, mathematician, and Nobel laureate, whose emphasis on logical analysis influenced the course of 20th-century philosophy. Born in Trelleck, Wales, on May 18, 1872, Russell was educated at Trinity College, University of Cambridge. After graduation in 1894, he traveled in France, Germany, and the United States and was then made a fellow of Trinity College. From an early age he developed a strong sense of social consciousness; at the same time, he involved himself in the study of logical and mathematical questions, which he had made his special fields and on which he was called to lecture at many institutions throughout the world. He achieved prominence with his first major work, The Principles of Mathematics (1902), in which he attempted to remove mathematics from the realm of abstract philosophical notions and to give it a precise scientific framework. Russell then collaborated for eight years with the British philosopher and mathematician Alfred North Whitehead to produce the monumental work Principia Mathematica (3 volumes, 1910-1913). This work showed that mathematics can be stated in terms of the concepts of general logic, such as class and membership in a class. It became a masterpiece of rational thought. Russell and Whitehead proved that numbers can be defined as classes of a certain type, and in the process they developed logic concepts and a logic notation that established symbolic logic as an important specialization within the field of philosophy.

Russell, Bertrand (Arthur William) Russell, 3rd Earl 1872-1970
Bertrand Russell was a philosopher and mathematician. He was born in Trelleck, Monmouthshire, SE Wales. He studied at Cambridge, where he became Fellow of Trinity College in 1895. He defended the objectivity of mathematics. He published his own Principles of Mathematics (1903), and collaborated with Whitehead in Principia Mathematica (1910-13). In 1916, he lost his fellowship (which wasn't restored until 1944) because of his pacifist beliefs, and in 1918 he served six months in prison. From the 1920s, he lived by lecturing and journalism, and became increasingly controversial. He visited the Soviet Union and was a professor in Beijing in 1920 and 1921. The growth and threat of Fascism led him to renounce pacifism in 1939. Later writings include An Enquiry into Meaning and Truth (1940) and Human Knowledge (1948). After 1949, he became a champion of nuclear disarmament, and engaged in correspondence with several world leaders. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1950, and wrote an autobiography (1967-69).

But he is probably more famous for his earlier leadership of the British reform movement. Russell was born in London, a son of the sixth Duke of Bedford. His family had been active in the Whig Party and was known for its support of civil rights. Russell was elected to the British House of Commons in 1813. In 1828, he made a motion that led to the repeal of the Test acts and the Corporation Act. As a result, Protestants who did not belong to the Church of England were allowed to participate fully in English politics for the first time. Russell also helped write and pass the Reform Act of 1832, which gave more middle-class men the right to vote. He became Earl Russell in 1861. John RUSSELL 1 UPDA

... Cross-Index WARNING : What we are presenting here is the heraldry associated with famous scientists, thinkers and inventors. For a few coats-of-arms, we have no evidence that they were actually borne by the individuals listed: These may either be family arms or arms that show up as components in the arms of others as if the illustrious individual had borne them. This is the case for James Clerk Maxwell or James Watt , for whom the best evidence (yet) of an association with the arms featured here is the quartering of those arms by other family members... Another example is "Sable a sun Or", which does refer unambiguously to St. Thomas Aquinas in the arms of a number of institutions or individuals, whereas it is almost certain that Thomas never sported any arms himself.

Bertrand Russell: A Life
By Caroline Moorehead
Viking, New York, 1993, 596 pages, $30.00
Reading this confession in Moorehead's excellent biography, I wondered just where Russell had picked up these factors. Was it as a young student, cramming for admission to Cambridge? I wondered whether he knew that this expression is the determinant of the $3 x 3$ circulant matrix whose first row is $[a, b, c]? And did he know that the factors, linear in $a, b, c,$ are the three eigenvalues of the matrix? Did he know that this factorization was historically the seed that, watered by Frobenius, grew into the great subject of group representation theory? I conjecture that he did not. To Russell, the algebraic expression was a mantra. He saw mathematics as the stabilizing force in the universe; it was the one place where absolute certainty reigned. In search of this certainty, groping for it, he said, as one might grope for religious faith, he devoted the first half of a very long life to an attempt to establish the identity of mathematics and logic. I first heard of Russell as an undergraduate. I did a chapter of Principia Mathematica, his masterwork, written (1910-1913) with Alfred North Whitehead, as a reading period assignment in a course in mathematical logic. At that time Russell was a celebrity, front-page news, having left the dots and epsilons and the "if-thens" of logic far behind. He had been appointed to a professorship of philosophy at CCNY in 1940, and almost immediately a charge of immorality was laid against him. It hit the papers. I, together with most undergraduates, sided with John Dewey, Albert Einstein, and Charlie Chaplin as they rushed in to defend Russell's right to teach epistemology.

Henry Howard, Earl of Surrey James Yeowell was an admirer of Henry Howard, Earl of Surrey's work, as well as Sir Thomas Wyatt's. It is also worth noting that Henry Howard was an admirer of Sir Thomas Wyatt's works also. Below is a history of Henry Howard. Henry Howard 1517-1547 Henry Howard was born to Thomas Howard, 3rd Duke of Norfolk and his wife, Lady Elizabeth Stafford (a daughter of Edward Stafford, 3rd Duke of Buckingham) in 1517, Hunsdon, Hertfordshire, England. He had a sister Mary Howard who married Henry Fitzroy, Duke of Richmond and also had a younger brother, Thomas Howard, 1st Viscount Blindon. He was brought up at Windsor, along with the illegitimate son of Henry VIII and Elizabeth Blount, who was Henry Fitzroy, Duke of Richmond (same person as mentioned above). On 21 May 1524, at Framlingham Castle, Suffolk (a Howard family home), his grandfather, Thomas Howard, 2nd Duke of Norfolk, Earl of Surrey, died. From him, he inherited his title, the Earl of Surrey and his own father became the 3rd Duke of Norfolk. Henry was aged 7 at this time. At 15 years, in 1532, he married Lady Frances de Vere (daughter of John de Vere, 15th Earl of Oxford, who was grandfather of Edward de Vere, 17th Earl of Oxford, the supposed real 'Shakespeare'). It was in 1532 that he accompanied his first cousin Anne Boleyn (his Aunt, Lady Elizabeth Howard's daughter), King Henry VIII and the Duke of Richmond, to France, staying for over a year. His first son, Thomas Howard (later 4th Duke of Norfolk) was born on 10 March 1537. The year before, Anne Boleyn was executed and his close friend and brother-in-law, Henry Fitzroy, died, aged 17. Finally in 1536, he joined his father against the Pilgrimage of Grace rebellion which protested against the King's dissolution of the monasteries.
