Bertrand Arthur William Russell, 3rd Earl Russell
British philosopher, mathematician, and Nobel laureate, whose emphasis on logical analysis influenced the course of 20th-century philosophy.
Born in Trelleck, Wales, on May 18, 1872, Russell was educated at Trinity College, University of Cambridge. After graduation in 1894, he traveled in France, Germany, and the United States and was then made a fellow of Trinity College. From an early age he developed a strong sense of social consciousness; at the same time, he involved himself in the study of logical and mathematical questions, which he had made his special fields and on which he was called to lecture at many institutions throughout the world. He achieved prominence with his first major work, The Principles of Mathematics (1902), in which he attempted to remove mathematics from the realm of abstract philosophical notions and to give it a precise scientific framework.
Russell then collaborated for eight years with the British philosopher and mathematician Alfred North Whitehead to produce the monumental work Principia Mathematica (3 volumes, 1910-1913). This work showed that mathematics can be stated in terms of the concepts of general logic, such as class and membership in a class. It became a masterpiece of rational thought. Russell and Whitehead proved that numbers can be defined as classes of a certain type, and in the process they developed logic concepts and a logic notation that established symbolic logic as an important specialization within the field of philosophy. In his next major work

Russell, Bertrand (Arthur William), 3rd Earl Russell
British philosopher and mathematician who contributed to the development of modern mathematical logic and wrote about social issues. His works include Principia Mathematica 1910-13 (with A N Whitehead), in which he attempted to show that mathematics could be reduced to a branch of logic; The Problems of Philosophy 1912; and A History of Western Philosophy 1946. He was an outspoken liberal pacifist. Nobel Prize for Literature 1950.
Russell was born in Monmouthshire, the grandson of Prime Minister John Russell. He studied mathematics and philosophy at Trinity College, Cambridge, where he became a lecturer 1910. His pacifist attitude in World War I lost him the lectureship, and he was imprisoned for six months for an article he wrote in a pacifist journal. His Introduction to Mathematical Philosophy 1919 was written in prison. He and his wife ran a progressive school 1927-32. After visits to the USSR and China, he went to the USA 1938 and taught at many universities. In 1940, a US court disqualified him from teaching at City College of New York because of his liberal moral views. He later returned to England and resumed his fellowship at Trinity College.
Russell was a life-long pacifist except during World War II. From 1949 he advocated nuclear disarmament and until 1963 was on the Committee of 100, an offshoot of the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament.

British philosopher, mathematician and social critic, one of the most widely read philosophers of this
century. Bertrand Russell was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1950. In his memoirs he
mentions that he formed in 1895 a plan to "write one series of books on the philosophy of the sciences
from pure mathematics to physiology, and another series of books on social questions. I hoped that the
two series might ultimately meet in a synthesis at once scientific and practical."
"The belief that fashion alone should dominate opinion has great advantages. It makes thought
unnecessary and puts the highest intelligence within the reach of everyone. It is not difficult to learn

RUSSELL, Bertrand Arthur William [1872-1970] British philosopher, mathematician, and social reformer.
Relationship Cousin
RUSSELL family ODT Contents: 3rd Earl Russell He was a man of principles, possessed of a keen intellect. A prolific writer, he produced over 90 books. While working on his definitive Principia Mathematica he discovered what is now called Russell's Paradox: If we have a class that is not a member of itself - is it a member of itself? If yes, then no, if no, then yes. After discussions with Wittgenstein Russell was forced to accept the view that mathematical statements are tautologies, not truths about a realm of logico-mathematical entities. I think that this discovery "spoiled" the field for him, as he never again worked intesively in mathematics.
Chronology
A Fellow of Trinity College, Cambridge, he was dismissed for his pacifist views during World War I.

Bertrand Arthur William Russell

Russell, Bertrand Arthur William Russell (1872-1970; 3rd Earl, succeeded brother 1931) was educated at home until he went to Trinity College, Cambridge, where he read mathematics and moral sciences. He was elected a fellow of Trinity in 1895, he lectured at the London School of Economics in 1896 and in Cambridge in 1899, where he started writing The Principles of Mathematics (1903). He was appointed a lecturer in philosophy at Trinity in 1910 (he was then completing Principia Mathematica with A. N. Whitehead ), but was removed for his pacifist ideas and propaganda in 1916; he was reinstated in 1919, and resigned in 1921. He earned his living by writing and journalism, and returned to academic life in 1938, as a visiting professor at Chicago, then at the University of California at Los Angeles, City College in New York, Harvard and other institutions, until he was invited to rejoin Trinity College, which he did in 1944. The dropping of the atomic bombs commanded the preoccupations and energies of the remaining part of his life. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for literature in 1950. Biographical History
Bertrand Russell 1872 - 1970 Betrand Russell was the third son of Lord John Russell (1792 - 1878), who twice served as Prime Minister (1846 - 1852 and 1865 - 1866). His parents died when he was very young and he was brought up by his grandmother. He entered Trinity College, Cambridge and obtained a first-class honours degree in mathematics and philosophy. He became a Fellow of the college in 1895. A visit to Berlin after university led to his first book "German Social Democracy" (1896). In 1907 a group of male supporters of votes for women formed the Men's League for Women's Suffrage. Bertrand Russell joined and stood unsuccessfully as a Suffragist candidate at a parliamentary by-election at Wimbledon. Russell was also a member of the Fabian Society. After the outbreak of the First World War Russell helped form the No-Conscription Fellowship (NCF), an organisation that planned to campaign against the introduction of conscription. Russell's activities in the the NCF resulted in him being sacked from his post as a lecturer at Cambridge University. Russell was also the editor of the NCF journal "Tribunal". Russell wrote an article in January 1918 criticising the American Army for strike-breaking. Russell was arrested and charged with making statements "likely to prejudice His Majesty's relations with the United States of America". He was found guilty and sentenced to six months in Brixton Prison. In 1931 Bertrand succeeded his elder brother as 3rd Earl of Russell. He used the forum of the House of Lords to promote his views on pacifism.
