Administrative/Biographical History
John Ruskin was the most influential art critic of the Victorian age. His literary output was enormous and he had a remarkable influence on public opinion. John Ruskin was born in 1819, the only child of John James Ruskin, a wealthy wine merchant and his wife, Margaret. Ruskin remained close to his parents for the rest of their lives. He was much influenced by his mother's strong protestant beliefs, and his father's literary interests. His parents encouraged Ruskin's love of drawing and took him on numerous Continental holidays, which awoke his passionate interest in the natural landscape. He was educated at home, before going to Christ Church, Oxford, where he did not find the curriculum to his taste. In 1843 he published the first volume of Modern Painters (5 volumes 1843-1860), which began as a defence of the artist, J M W Turner, but grew into an exposition of Ruskin's principles of art. He later made an equally passionate defence of the Pre-Raphaelites, who had been initially dismissed by most established critics. Ruskin also had a great interest in medieval architecture. His European travels had introduced him to the architecture of France and northern Italy, and aware of the threat to it from neglect, unsympathetic restoration and modernisation, set out to describe it to his readers in great detail and aesthetic sensitivity. He was a champion of the gothic style, which he expounded in

Thirst for largeness - grasp of terror
WHAT WAS IT in William Turner's art that so immensely captured John Ruskin that he almost devoted his life to the advocacy of it? Maybe he saw some of his own transformed desires in the works of the great master of light, surf and rock. I deliberately avoid the modern term sublimation, since this mental state neither was modern nor sublime, but heavy as the stones of Venice he also chose to write about and life surely taught Ruskin lessons as harsh as those ethics of the dust he lectured the young girls at Winnington school about.

by S. W. Parrott The result was "Modern Painters", published in five volumes 1843-60. During those years Turner himself had died, at the age of 76 in 1851. He left behind some 300 paintings and 19,000 drawings and watercolors, that Ruskin cataloged.
In 1848 Ruskin married Effie Gray, who later left him for one of the Pre-Raphaelites, John Everett Millais. Nevertheless, Ruskin wrote a book in defense of this artistic movement, "Pre-Raphaelitism" (1851). Apart from "Modern Painters", his most famous works are "The Seven Lamps of Architecture" (1849) and "The Stones of Venice" (three volumes 1851-53). Ruskin detested industrialism and also wrote several essays about social reform that were later collected in "Unto This Last" (1862).

Ruskin was an English writer, art critic and reformer, best known for his studies of architecture and its social and historical implications Ruskin was born in London and educated at the University of Oxford. His father, a wealthy merchant, encouraged his youthful passions for art, literature, and travel. He set forth his theory about the relationship between art and morality in the first volume of Modern Painters. This work was in part a defense of the then-controversial painter J. M. W. Turner. The two books that followed, The Seven Lamps of Architecture (1849) and The Stones of Venice (1851-1853), were studies in the religious, moral, economic, and political significance of domestic architecture. Rebelling against the aesthetically numbing and socially debasing effects of the Industrial Revolution , he put forth the theory that art, which is essentially spiritual, reached its zenith in the Gothic art of the late Middle Ages, which was inspired by religious and moral zeal. Ruskin believed that individual craftsmen produced the most beautiful and unique work. These craftsman, if given the freedom to design, were capable of producing beautiful works of art befitting religious structures.

Figure 1.A 3 1/2 year old John Ruskin was painted in 1822 by James Northcote, National Portrait Gallery. The hills in the background "as blue as my shoes" were included at the reqiest of young John, who reportedly felt the "idea of distant hills was commected in my mind with the approach to the extreme felicities of life". It is unclear to HBC why he is holding a blue ribbon. But his mother claerly liked blue sashes and bows, Note the long sash flowing from a bow at his back, bows on his shoulders, and bows on his blue shoes.
John Ruskin (England, 1819-1900)
John Ruskin was a towering intellect and leading voice in England during the second half of the 19th Century. He was an author, art critic, and reformerone of England's most respected Victorian thinkers. Some have called him the most influentional cultural figure of his day. He had a strict if protected childhood. While HBC at this time has little information on how he was dressed as a child, we do know that he wore dresses as a small boy. Available information, however, provides some fascination insights into child rearing practices in the Victorian era.
Parents and Family Background
John was the only child of Margaret and John James Ruskin. His father, a prosperous, self-made man who was a founding partner of Pedro Domecq sherries, collected art and encouraged his son's literary activities, while his mother, a devout evangelical Protestant, early dedicated her son to the service of God and devoutly wished him to become an Anglican bishop. In his parents' life the struggle with sin and the struggle with poverty were both won by effort and denial.

Roots of Arts and Crafts
Back to Introduction On to America The Arts and Crafts Movement began in England in the 1860s as a reform movement. Its primary proponents were John Ruskin (1819-1900) and William Morris who is pictured at right (1834-1896). Ruskin, its philosophical leader, was the most influential of all Victorian writers on the arts and a member of the Pre-Raphaelite movement. The Pre-Raphaelites believed the medieval world was purer in form than the post-Renaissance world because it was more closely tied to nature. Ruskin's book The Stones of Venice (1853) had a great impact on the intellectuals of Victorian England. In it, he made a direct connection between art, nature, and morality-good moral art was nature expressed through man. Continuing this connection, Ruskin believed the decorative arts affected the men who produced them. The machine dehumanized the worker and led to a loss of dignity because it removed him from the artistic process and thus, nature itself. As Ruskin stated, "all cast from the machine is bad, as work it is dishonest." While Ruskin built the philosophical foundation of the Arts and Crafts Movement, it was William Morris who became its leader. Morris took Ruskin's ideas about nature, art, morality, and the degradation of human labor and translated them into a unified theory of design. By doing so, Morris successfully wedded aesthetics and social reform into the Arts and Crafts Movement.

"UNTO THIS LAST"
Four Essays on the First Principles of Political Economy pp. xviii, 174 + Tipped in at front (4p.) manuscript comments on both the text and the binding by Stella Gabrielle 12mo. 17.5 cm. All edges gilt and lightly gauffered with a dotted line fillet. Wonderful Doves binding in dark green goatskin. Beautifully tooled in gilt with Tudor roses, rose leaves and vines. Rubbed at joints and old repair at hinges. The turn-ins tooled and signed: "DOVES BINDERY / 19 C-S 01". First edition. The four essays were previously printed in Cornhill Magazine, August, September, October, and November, 1860. Cobden-Sanderson had apparently secured a supply of the original sheets and held them for suitable housing by the Doves bindery, as he thought appropriate. An almost identical binding, dated 1904, is described and pictured in 'The Doves Bindery' by Marianne Tidcombe, p. 312-313.
The text is one of Ruskin's most important, though rather overlooked today. In it he argues for far-reaching economic and social reforms, including a minimum wage and a forty hour work week! Both William Morris and Cobden-Sanderson were greatly influenced by Ruskin's writings on these matters.
The Doves binding is simple, but elegant. The tipped-in manuscript also adds to the special appeal of this copy.

The Ruskin Library
The Ruskin Library was constructed on the University campus during 1996-97 as the culmination of the first stage of a project to secure for posterity and make accessible the foremost collection of works of art on paper (1,486), diaries (29 volumes), letters (around 8000), literary manuscripts and transcripts (300), photographs and daguerreotypes (1835), printed books (over 3,500) and other material relating to Ruskin and his circle. Over £3m was raised, including £2.3m from the Heritage Lottery Fund, and the Whitehouse Ruskin Collection (which was formerly housed on the Isle of Wight) was installed in the archive area early in 1998. The Reading Room opened in January 1998, followed by the public gallery in April 1998. The building was officially opened by HRH Princess Alexandra on 9 May 1998.
