Ruskin, John
John Ruskin (1819-1900), a lifelong experimenter with genre, is best known as an art critic whose theories of beauty and the imagination were formed by his evangelical training, his attention to detail, and the early poetry of William Wordsworth . Ruskin's literary criticism, dispersed throughout Modern Painters (1843-60) and concentrated in his studies of myth, The Queen of the Air (1869), and of Romantic poetry and the novel, Fiction Fair and Foul (1880-81), reflects his sustained concern for art as a visible sign of an abstract quality, particularly the moral temper of the artist. His dramatic verbal translations of J. M. W. Turner's canvases in volume 1 of Modern Painters (1843), his highly wrought visual associations, and his allegorical readings of painting, sculpture, and landscape in later works such as Modern Painters 5 (1860) and The Bible of Amiens (1880-85) influenced George Eliot, Thomas Hardy, and Marcel Proust, among other writers.
Ruskin's aesthetic judgments were based on the link between beauty and morality made during daily Bible readings with his mother, who required him to recite passages from memory and enforced what he called in his autobiography accuracy of sensation and precision of feeling. In the habit of observing everything around him (including patterns in the carpet and bricks in the wall) and of searching the Bible for types and antitypes, Ruskin believed that physical qualities manifest divine attributes. In Modern Painters 2 (1846), he labels this relation "typical" after biblical typology, although the connection he makes between light, for example, and purity is actually allegorical, since it juxtaposes an abstraction with a phenomenon. Ruskin's "vital beauty," defined as "the appearance of felicitous fulfilment of function in living things" (4-146), is more akin to evangelical typology; an object displaying vital beauty reenacts "a moral purpose and achievement" (4-147) that arouses the sympathy of the virtuous beholder. By claiming that beauty was in effect purposive and inherent in objects, Ruskin was able to dissociate aesthetics from utility and invest art with a divine pattern or order. His position allied him with the eighteenth-century sensationists, notably

Ruskin, John Ruskin, John (1819-1900), English writer, art critic, and
reformer, a dominant tastemaker among intellectuals of the
Victorian period. Ruskin is best known for his monumental studies
of architecture and its social and historical implications described
in The Seven Lamps of Architecture and its sequel, The Stones
of Venice. Ruskin was born February 8, 1819, in London and educated at
the University of Oxford. His youthful passions for art, literature,
and travel were encouraged by his father, a wealthy merchant.
The story of his early years was told by Ruskin himself in his last
work, an unfinished autobiography, Praeterita (1885-1889). His
main theme, the relationship between art and morality, was first set forth, and his influence as aesthete and art critic established, with the publication in 1843 of the first volume of his Modern Painters. This work was in part a defense of the then-controversial painter J. M. W. Turner. The two books that followed, The Seven Lamps of Architecture (1849) and The

... Fred Yates John Ruskin (1819-1900) John Ruskin was the adored child of wealthy parents (his father was a sherry merchant) and was recognised from an early age as a prodigy. He became one of the leading art critics and social commentators of his day, possessing an acute sensitivity and judgement allied to a stern Protestant morality instilled in him by his mother. Ruskin‘s artistic judgement is reflected in his championing of the works of J.W.M.Turner (some of which he bought and hung at Brantwood, his house near Coniston from 1872) and of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, as well as in his architectural criticism. In his Seven Lamps of Architecture Ruskin set out to define seven principles: Sacrifice, Truth, Power, Beauty, Life, Memory and Obedience. In The Stones of Venice he recorded in lyrical prose the architectural decoration that he felt was in danger of extinction. Ruskin believed that the beauty of medieval architecture arose from the pleasure the workman took in his craft, a view which William Morris and the Arts and Crafts movement took up and developed. Following a period in which his writing focused upon controversial economic issues, as in Unto This Last, Ruskin was elected the first Slade Professor of Fine Art at Oxford.

John Ruskin by Liz Piandarian Links to Online Resources Books and Articles John Ruskin, born on February 8, 1819, was one of England's most influential thinkers during the Victorian period. His work spans over many subjects, including art, religion, and sociological development. Uniquely, on the issue of work in society, he linked his thoughts on 19th century labor with the identity of the artist, insisting upon a preservation of craftsmanship in all methods of production. This connection between art and society was a tie among many of Ruskin's writings.
John Ruskin, 1819-1900 Raised for a life with the ministry, Ruskin rejected this path after attending Oxford from 1836-40. Family travels during his childhood and adolescence introduced him to the world of art and nature, instilling an excitement for these subjects. His views published in "The Nature of Gothic" in The Stones of Venice (1851-3) connected his flare for art and architecture with his passion for the workman in society. Here, he suggests that all workers be considered artists, encouraging the craftsman to reflect his imagination onto the product. "[T]his is what we have to do with all our labourers; to look for the thoughtful part of them, and get that out of them, whatever we lose for it, whatever faults and errors we are obliged to take with it."

J.M.W.Turner - John Ruskin
Translate English to Italian English to French English to German English to Portuguese English to Spanish Writer, art critic, champion of socialism, John Ruskin put everything he had into his beliefs, including most of his fortune. When his father left him a large sum of money, he gave most of it away to art museums and charities. Ruskin was born in London, England, on Feb. 8, 1819. His father was a wealthy wine merchant, and both of his parents devoted much time to his education. In 1836 he left home to go to Oxford, where he won a prize for poetry. He graduated in 1842. Early in his career Ruskin wrote mostly about painting and architecture. The first volume of his 'Modern Painters' series, published when he was 24, redirected public taste. This series and 'The Seven Lamps of Architecture' and 'The Stones of Venice' gave the people of Queen Victoria's reign a new interest in art and a new point of view toward it. In his later life he was a professor of art at Oxford. When Ruskin was about 40 years old, he began to be more interested in humanity and became a social reformer. His writings changed. He began to describe what he thought would be an ideal state of society and how he felt this could be brought about. Ruskin did not champion revolutionary socialism, but he cried out for national education, old-age pensions, and better housing for the working classes. Ruskin's strong feelings about social welfare led him to organize the Guild of St. Georgean elaborate social structure in which machines were practically banished. Even though Ruskin knew comparatively little about sociology or economics, his 'Sesame and Lilies', a popular statement of some of his sociological ideas, became very well known.

John Ruskin (1819-1900) "It's unwise to pay too much, but it's unwise to pay too little. When you pay too much you lose a little money, That is all. When you pay too little you sometimes lose everything, because the thing you bought was incapable of doing the thing you bought it to do. The common law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a lot. It cannot be done. If you deal with the lowest bidder, it is well to add something for the risk you run. And if you do that, you will have enough to pay for something better." John Ruskin (1819-1900) English Author, Art Critic and Social Reformer.
