RIVAS-IRIARTE EXPEDITION . The second Spanish coastal voyage to search for the Sieur de La Salle's qv Texas colony, the Rivas-Iriarte expedition, was also the most important. It found the wreckage of La Salle's ships at Matagorda Bay and made a complete circuit of the Gulf of Mexico. qv qv and his coastal map, which has not yet come to light. The voyage was made in two piraguas (small, open vessels equipped with oars and a single sail) built at Veracruz especially for the purpose. The two craft, named and , had keels of fifty-four and sixty feet and were of shallow draft. Rosario qv was the larger. Esperanza was captained by Pedro de Iriarte. qv qv qv Belle on Matagorda Peninsula and, in the entrance channel, the rudder post of his storeship Aimable , which had run aground while trying to enter the bay. They nevertheless concluded, because of the shallowness of the bay, that any attempt to establish a settlement here could only have met disaster and therefore no longer posed a threat. The explorers accorded scant attention to Galveston Bay because of its shoals. On reaching the Calcasieu River, they heard news-possibly of La Salle's men living among the Indians-that caused them to turn back to make the first known exploration of both Galveston Bay and Sabine Lake. qv At the Calcasieu also, they made the first known European contact with the Louisiana Atákapas. With the aid of two castaways from a lost Spanish galley-one an Apalachino Indian from Florida, the other a "Mexican" boy-whom they found living among these natives, the voyagers obtained significant ethnological data.

The Robert C. Seamans : Compared to Westward Cramer
P assing an exciting milestone in SEA history, SEA’s Board of Trustees on September 15, 1998 approved the preliminary design and specifications for the Robert C. Seamans to replace Westward. Presented by (former) Project Manager Wallace Stark and designer Barry Van Geffen, Managing Director of Laurent Giles Marine Architects of Lymington, England, the plans represent more than a year of hard work and substantial involvement by a broad SEA constituency. The preliminary design gave our marine architects a solid basis to continue detailed design work and was used to make necessary submissions for regulatory approvals from the U.S. Coast Guard and the American Bureau of Shipping. In addition, it formed the major part of SEA’s bid package that was sent to as many as fifteen pre-qualified shipyards in mid-October 1998. Once bids were in— mid-December, 1999—SEA began to develop relationships with up to three top shipyards. Instructions to our marine architects were straightforward: to creatively translate SEA’s knowledge and experience of seagoing academic programs and sailing ships into a design for a Sailing School Vessel for the 21st century. SEA asked the architects to make every effort to produce an excellent sailing vessel with beautiful lines that considers student and crew safety in all regards. The resulting preliminary design embodied much of what we know and all that we have come to trust in Westward and Corwith Cramer. This design facilitates the learning and teaching that takes place in every area of the vessel.
