Back in the crew room it was very obvious that, although JEFTS is essentially a civilian organisation, it is run very much along military lines. Indeed, anyone observing the way the whole organisation is run might conclude that this was an operational RAF base. This logic must pay dividends for the students when they progress to an actual military posting.
As the weather was slowly beginning to improve I drew a parachute and other related kit from the personal equipment store before making my way back to the aircraft. The large canopy slides up and back, making entry to the cockpit quite easy, even when wearing a parachute and helmet. A five-point harness is fitted as standard, and although the rudder pedals adjust, the seats are fixed. Therefore, once I had adjusted the rudder pedals to my satisfaction, I strapped myself down securely and began to appraise the cockpit.
The primary flight instruments are all grouped in front of the student, with only a stand-by altimeter and artificial horizon in front of the instructor. The slightly small fuel contents, oil pressure and temperature gauges are also situated in front of the instructor. Following normal conventions, the radio stack is centrally located, with the transponder in front of the instructor.

Author recalls experience of war with Rudder’s Rangers
By By Brittany Hooten Published: Thursday, April 4, 2002 It was the height of World War II, and Robert Edlin was eager for front-line action, so he sought a transfer to Lt. James Earl Rudder's elite 2nd Ranger Battalion. When Rudder asked him why he wanted to be a ranger, Edlin said he wanted to be with somebody who "will fight all the way through." Rudder followed that question and asked Edlin what he would do if he was leading a company of rangers on a hill and was surrounded and far outnumberd by German soldiers. Edlin said he would surrender and then try to escape . "[Rudder] said, 'You're the first S.O.B. that came in here and surrendered,' " Edlin said. "That's how I wound up in the rangers." "[Rudder was] the greatest soldier and man I ever met in my life," Edlin said.

    Bully Proof
by Robert S. Jefferson and Marisol Rudder, Parents' Source, March 20, 2003
What Can Parents of the Victims Do?
Parents of students who are bullied, or who bully others, are sometimes unaware of the problem, and therefore may talk with their children about it only to a limited extent. Parents who know or suspect their child is bullied should contact the child's teacher or school as soon as possible, in order to achieve cooperation in solving the problem. It is often appropriate for school officials to arrange a mediation in which both victims and bullies, and their parents, participate. The aim of a meeting is to:
    • Discuss the situation.
    • Arrive at a plan for solving the problem.
    • Follow up with other sessions, during which evaluations can be made.
    • Make sure that the actions agreed upon are actually being carried out.
Because a bullied child is sometimes insecure, with low self-confidence and few or no friends, it is important for parents to help the child become "better adjusted" independently of any current bullying situation. One way to increase the self-confidence of a victimized child is to encourage him/her to develop potential talents, which may help the student assert him/herself among peers. Among boys, the typical victim is often physically weaker than his fellow students, and may suffer from "body anxiety." It is therefore desirable that the victimized students undertake some kind of physical training, or suitable sports. Even if the opportunities for them to assert themselves in sports are limited, the physical exercise can result in improved coordination and less body anxiety, which will increase their self-confidence. By taking part in activities in which he/she is talented, the bullied student will probably initiate contact with peers whom he or she has not previously met. The experience may become meaningful if the child makes at least one new friend. To improve the child's situation at school, parents can:

    Background
Louis Béchereau was a talented designer and before the war had created the superb Deperdussin monoplanes. Now he was working for the Société anonyme pour l’Aviation et ses Dérivés and decided to build an aircraft around the new 150hp Hispano- Suiza 8A engine.
This water-cooled V8 engine was designed by Swiss engineer Marc Birkigt and was to become a landmark in the thinking of future aircraft engines.
Béchereau’s brainchild was to receive the official designation of Spa. 7 C 1.

This is a good subject choice from Battle Axe and is the second offering in this series, following on from the Fokker D.VII. This type of aircraft lends itself to large scales where the modeler has plenty of opportunity to go berserk and add extra detail. Only one sprue is used for the plastic parts but it is huge. All parts were fully moulded and despite the large size of some of the items, there was no warping of any kind. Measurements were taken off Ian Stair’s plans in the Albatros Datafile on the Fokker E.III and used to compare the relative accuracy of the parts.

Captain Robert Searle (fl. 1658-1671) By Davis Walker Robert Searle (alias John Davis) was one of the earliest and most active of the English buccaneers on Jamaica. Nothing, to date, is known of his early life. The famous buccaneer chronicler, Esquemeling, states that Searle was “born at Jamaica,” but this seems unlikely, since that island did not become an English dominion until 1655. Searle’s career as a “gentleman of fortune” was marred by frequent quarrels with Sir Thomas Modyford, royal governor of Jamaica, who usually befriended buccaneers. Searle’s first known ship was the 60-ton, 8-gun Cagway , the largest of three Spanish merchantmen captured by Sir Christopher Myngs as he returned from his raid on Santa Marta and Tolu (Columbia) in 1659 Four years later, Searle captained the Cagway as part of Myng’s expedition against Santiago de Cuba. This force of 1,300 men and a dozen vessels sailed from Port Royal (Jamaica) on October 1, 1662 and two-and-a-half weeks later disembarked to the east of their intended target. Santiago was overrun the following day and a considerable amount of booty carried back to Jamaica. In 1664, the political situation in Europe and the Caribbean was volatile. Constant raiding by English buccaneers had prompted repeated and vociferous protests from Madrid, delivered by the Spanish ambassador to King Charles II of England. In turn, a letter to Governor Modyford from the king stated that “His Majesty cannot sufficiently express his dissatisfaction at the daily complaints of violence and depredation” against the Spanish by the ships of Jamaica. Modyford was “again strictly commanded not only to forbid the prosecution of such violence for the future, but to inflict condign punishment upon offenders, and to have the entire restitution and satisfaction made to the sufferers.”

Despues de haber escrito esta obra maestra en su juventud, simplemente desaparecio de la escena literaria: fue a Talavera para ejercer el oficio de abogado, y alli murio en 1541.
