The connection between the true Cyrano, the 17th century French soldier, dramatist, and soldier, is nominal. Rostand's plays were romantic and entertaining, providing an alternative to the naturalistic theatre. CYRANO:

That I am proud possessing such appendice.
'Tis well known, a big nose is indicative

A kiss, when all is said, what is it? A rosy dot placed on the "I" in loving; Tis a secret told to the mouth instead of to the ear. The dream, alone, is of interest. What is life, without a dream? A pessimist is a man who tells the truth prematurely. I recoil, overcome with the glory of my rosy hue and the knowledge that I, a mere cock, have made the sun rise.

Edmond Rostand
