Dante Gabriel Rossetti Dante Gabriel Rossetti was the son of Gabriele Rossetti, an Italian political exile who came to England in 1824, and the elder brother of the poet Christina Rossetti . He was born in London and educated at King's College School. After studying painting at Cary's Art Academy and the Royal Academy, he became acquainted with Holman Hunt and John Everett Millais who went on to form the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, a movement characterised by romanticism, symbolism, and dramatic use of colour. Although better known as a painter, Rossetti wrote poetry from an early age, his best known poem, The Blessed Damozel , appearing in 1850 in The Gem , the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood's magazine. In 1860 he married the beautiful Eleanor Siddal, the model for the drowned Ophelia in Millais' painting. Devastated by her death in 1862 from a laudanum overdose, he buried a manuscript containing many poems with her, which he later exhumed and published in 1870. His first volume of poetry, Early Italian Poems , had been published earlier in 1861 and contained translations of Dante and some 60 other poets. In 1881 he published

THE CORRESPONDENCE [close this window] Dante Gabriel Rossetti, 1828-1882 Nationality : English Date of Birth : 12 May 1828 Place of Birth : 38 Charlotte Street, Date of Death : 9 April 1882 Place of Death : Birchington-on-sea, Kent Identity: Christened as Gabriel Charles Dante Rossetti, D. G. Rossetti, as he became known, was the eldest son of the Italian Dante scholar and political refugee Gabriele Pasquale Giuseppe Rossetti and the half-Italian Frances Mary Lavinia Polidori. His godfather was Charles Lyell of Kinnordy. Rossetti had three siblings, Maria Francesca (b. 1827), William Michael (b. 1829) and Christina Georgina (b. 1830). Life: Rossetti, who was one of the founder members of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, was both poet and artist. His first exhibited oil The Girlhood of Mary Virgin (1849) revealed his early debt to medieval art and his involvement with High Anglican Tractarianism. He predominantly worked in the medium of watercolour in the 1850s, and was preoccupied with medieval chivalric themes. Inspired by the Venetian masters, 1859 saw a shift towards the sensuous in both Rossetti's style and subject matter. From this point until the end of his life Rossetti absorbed himself in the painting of luxurious female half-lengths, notable for their decorative and symbolic accoutrements. In 1870 Rossetti's first book of poems was published. Wapping (YMSM 35) , and in the following year Rossetti took La Princesse du pays de la porcelaine (YMSM 50) into his studio in order to show a prospective client. This client did not purchase the work, but Whistler claimed that it was Rossetti who persuaded F. R. Leyland later to buy it. When Whistler was expelled from the Burlington Arts Club in December 1867 as a result of a dispute with his brother-in-law, F. Seymour Haden, Rossetti and his brother left in support. Rossetti Pre-Raphaelite Followers Pre-Raphaelite Successors References and Related Sites Home T he English son of an Italian poet and revolutionary, Dante Gabrielle Rossetti is often considered one of the most prominent and influential artists of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. Many admirers, past and present, believe that Rossetti's life and career as an artist and poet have come to symbolize the principles embraced by followers the Pre-Raphaelite Movement-revolution, romanticism and artistic reformation. His brother, William Michael (an elected member of the "PRB") would serve as the society's chronicler and his poet sister, Christina Rosetti , was also closely associated with the Pre-Raphaelites. A s a student of the Royal Academy, Rossetti had difficulty in mastering the depiction of classical forms, proportion and perspective (the fundamental elements of Renaissance art). Later, this shortcoming would be conceptually and technically adapted as an "artistic alternative" in painting styles typically seen in the works of Rossetti and other Pre-Raphaelites.
