Dante Gabriel Rossetti INDIETRO indice Romanticismo Dante Gabriel Rossetti (1828-1882) è il principale esponente della Confraternita dei Preraffaelliti, costituita in Inghilterra nel 1848. Nonostante il nome italiano, Rossetti è un pittore inglese che sviluppa la sua attività nella seconda metà dell’Ottocento. La Confraternita dei Preraffaelliti è la corrente artistica che più di qualsiasi altro movimento romantico si rifà al medioevo. Tanto che già dal nome dichiarano le loro intenzioni poetiche e stilistiche: rifarsi all’epoca tardo-medioevale, in particolare alla spiritualità e allo stile tardo gotico e primo rinascimentale del Trecento e del Quattrocento. Ciò che rifiutano è quel rinascimento maturo che trovava in Raffaello l’esponente più tipico. Il fenomeno dell’arte preraffaellita, anche per il periodo in cui si manifesta, è un ultima manifestazione del romanticismo inglese ed insieme anche il contributo anglosassone alle poetiche simboliste europee che partecipano del decadendismo di fine secolo. Il medioevo dei preraffaelliti è infatti molto letterario, tradendo una rievocazione che sà più di sogno e di mito che non di riscoperta vera del periodo medievale. I quadri preraffaelliti di Rossetti sono pervasi da una dimensione del silenzio che risuona di note sensuali e decadenti. La figura femminile è sempre presente, svolgendo un ruolo simile a quello di Beatrice per Dante: lo svelamento, attraverso la bellezza, della dimensione trascendentale.

Dante Gabriel Rossetti abriel Charles Dante Rossetti was born in London on May 12, 1828 to an English mother and Italian father. His mother, Frances Mary Lavinia Polidori was the sister of Byron's physician John Polidori, who had committed suicide at a young age. His father, Gabriele, was a literary scholar who was obsessed with the works of Dante and spoke mainly in Italian. Young Gabriel therefore spoke Italian as well as English from a very early age. When he was born, Gabriel already had an older sister Maria. His younger brother William and sister Christina were the next additions to the family. Early on, Rossetti demonstrated literary and artistic talent and aspirations. One family legend has it that in 1834 a local milkman was amazed as he watched six-year old Gabriel creating a drawing of a rocking horse. In 1841, Rossetti entered the Sass's Academy art school, a preparatory school for the art Academy. He soon grew tired of the grinding, repetitive exercises and often just stayed at home to paint what he desired. Gabriel entered the Royal Academy Antique school in 1846, but found it just as dull as Sass's. What's more, his growing interest in and talent for poetry sometimes left him indecisive over which path to followwas he mainly a poet or a painter? He had, by this time, translated several volumes of Italian poetry into English, corresponded with various poets and writers, and had started developing what would become some of his most famous poems.

In haunting paintings such as his Beata Beatrix The Day Dream , and Monna Vanna , Rossetti created a type of languid beauty that has cast a timeless spell of enchantment over viewers. It is this contribution to art history for which Rossetti is today chiefly remembered and admired. Gabriel Charles Dante Rossetti was born in London, England, in 1828. As a young man, he briefly studied art with the painter Ford Madox Brown. During the same year (1848), the charismatic Rossetti was to meet fellow artists William Holman Hunt and John Everett Millais. This group of friends and colleagues - Rossetti, Hunt, and Millais - would together form the core of the innovative Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood (the PRB). The program devised by the members of this group was to have a profound effect on Rossetti's early artistic development, the results of which can be seen in such works as The Girlhood of Mary Virgin and The Annunciation . In time, the painter broke away from the strict demands of the PRB and developed his own unique style. Ultimately, Rossetti's mature works focused on the depiction of stunning images of women.

The story of his life and work is compelling, with complications and touches of tragedy and triumph.
