Dante Gabriel Rossetti (British, 1828-1882) Biography Dante Gabriel Rossetti was undoubtedly the most inspired of the Pre-Raphaelites, with his personal vision of the medieval world of the Arthurian legends which he painted with an intensity never before seen in art, with the exception perhaps of the visionary paintings of William Blake.
Albumen print by Lewis Carroll, taken at Tudor House, 16 Cheyne Walk, Chelsea, October 1863.
From left to right: DG Rossetti, Christina Rossetti, Mrs Rossetti, William Rossetti The circumstances that surrounded the death of Elizabeth Siddal have never been fully explained, although it has been claimed that Rossetti drove her to her death. A red-haired beauty, she was first his model and then his mistress before she became his wife. She was then forced to play the role of an unattainable goddess while Rossetti associated with prostitutes in private. His love for Elizabeth was genuine enough, but it was rooted in a form of high romanticism which had little to do with everyday living. When he confessed to her that the intense love he felt for her would become even stronger if she were to die, she took him at his word. Trapped in an unreal world of romantic passion, she made her escape by taking an overdose of laudanum. She was only 31. Rossetti was prostrate with grief at the funeral. In a gesture worthy of the final scene in some grand opera, he placed a copy of all his unpublished poems in her coffin – only to have them retrieved some years later and sent to the printers for publication. Despite all his talk of everlasting love for Elizabeth, he later had a long-standing affair with Jane Morris, the wife of William Morris.

Dante Gabriel Rossetti (1828-1882)
Snowdrops Dante Gabriel Rossetti was the central figure of the Pre-Raphaelites . Together with Holman Hunt and Millais , he started the original Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, and was the 'poetic inspiration' of the movement. He later was the centre of a new group of Pre-Raphaelite inspired painters, tempting the young Burne Jones and William Morris to become artists. He was born in London, son of Gabriele Rossetti, who had come to England in 1824 and was professor of Italian at King's College, London. His brother, William Michael Rossetti, became an eminent art critic, and he had two artistic sisters, Maria and Christina. After studying at Sass's drawing academy for four years, in 1846 Rossetti was enrolled at the Royal Academy Schools. However, impatience with the restrictive methods and slow pace of the Academy regime lead him to abandon his studies there, and he then worked for a period under Ford Madox Brown . In 1848 he met Holman Hunt, and they shared a studio together for a time. Through Hunt, Rossetti became acquainted with Millais, and the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood was born in that year.

Son of Gabriele Rossetti and Frances Polidori. He spoke fluently Italian as well as English and was educated at King's College School (1837-1842), F.S. Cary's Academy of Art (1842-1846) and the Royal Academy Antique School. In 1847 he left school to concentrate on art. He sent a fan letter to Ford Madox Brown, whom he admired much. Brown thought Rossetti was being sarcastic and went to the Rossetti family home to give him a sound trashing. There he found to his surprise that Rossetti was absolutely sincere. Brown became Rossetti's mentor and their friendship lasted for life.
When he was only eighteen Rossetti wrote his poem "The Blessed Damozel", which stresses the importance of human love. In 1848 he founded the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood with William Holman Hunt, John Millais, James Collinson, Thomas Woolner, Frederic Stephen and his brother William Rossetti. They published "The Germ", a platform for their poetry and other art. In 1849 he first exhibited an important painting, "The Girlhood of Mary Virgin" (now at the Tate Gallery, London).
In 1850 he met Lizzie Siddal, one of the models for the pre-raphaelite painters. She became his pupil as well as his lover and also an important source of inspiration. In 1851 they became engaged.

The House of Life: 41. Through Death to Love
Like labour-laden moonclouds faint to flee From winds that sweep the winter-bitten wold, Like multiform circumfluence manifold Of night's flood-tide,like terrors that agree Of hoarse-tongued fire and inarticulate sea, Even such, within some glass dimm'd by our breath, Our hearts discern wild images of Death, Shadows and shoals that edge eternity.
Howbeit athwart Death's imminent shade doth soar One Power, than flow of stream or flight of dove Sweeter to glide around, to brood above. Tell me, my heart, what angel-greeted door Or threshold of wing-winnow'd threshing-floor Hath guest fire-fledg'd as thine, whose lord is Love? Notes ] The sonnets that make up The House of Life were composed between 1847 and 1881, spanning Rossetti's poetic career. In March 1869, he published sixteen of them in the Fortnightly Review with the significant title "Of Life, Love and Death." In his volume Poems , 1870, fifty sonnets (including the one from the Fortnightly Review ) and eleven lyrics were grouped together under the general title "Sonnets and Songs towards a work to be called The House of Life ." Six other sonnets from the 1870 volume, but not there included in the

Dante Gabriel Rossetti (1828-1882) was one of the most unusual and original of all Victorian artists. He was a founder member of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. In his middle years he created vivid watercolours and intricate drawings on themes of love and morality. He is perhaps best known for his images of powerful and mysterious women. These dreamlike and erotic paintings have a magic that still speaks to us today. Rossetti created a new kind of art. He used colour, design and symbolism to suggest a mood and to convey the ideas that were important to him - female virtue, beauty, sensuality, love, death and destiny. This is the first major show of Rossetti's works since 1973. It includes over 150 items, featuring many of his most famous pieces. Here you can see a selection of these works and find out more about one of British art's most fascinating figures. Works Conserving Rossetti Chronology Merchandise ... Victorian Art in Britain Dante Gabriel Rossetti
Dante Gabriel Rossetti 1828-1882 Rossetti was one of the founders of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, and was the soul and main intellectual force of the whole movement. He must have been a fascinating individual, who was the inspiration for the whole of the second generation of the movement, and was the artistic mentor of the young Burne-Jones and William Morris. I have felt for a considerable time that the biography on VAB of Rossetti is grossly inadequate, and this replacement represents an attempt to address its shortcomings. Biography of Rossetti Early Life Gabriel Charles Dante Rossetti was born at Charlotte Street, off Portland Place, London on May 12 th Rossetti senior worked long hours at Kings College, and supplemented his income by private tuition. Neither he, nor his wife socialised outside their home, lacking the necessary income and time. Most evenings there were two or three fellow Italian exiles in the house, and the talk was of art, literature, and primarily politics. Perhaps as a result of this Dante Gabriel Rossetti the adult, was, though enlightened and progressive, disinterested in the specifics of politics. Edward Burne-Jones was similar in his outlook.
