THEODORE ROOSEVELT 1858-1919
Theodore Roosevelt was one of the most successful presidents in American history. He was fun to hang around with. He had a screeching voice that sometimes scared people who did not expect it coming from a man like himself. He told jokes and played with children. He loved children. He told ghost stories that would scare the little children to death. However, he had another side to him. When it was not time for fun and games anymore, he meant it and he did his job well. He took great pride in the United States. He wanted the best for his country and therefore he served his country to the very best of his ability.
Roosevelt had a poor health when he was young. His asthma was especially bad. Whenever his asthma acted up on him, his caring father would take young Roosevelt out on the wagon and ride around until he got better. This is where Roosevelt gained his love for nature. He enjoyed being outside. He loved the tranquility of the forest, the animals, the water and such. A particular favorite of his was the bird. He loved the birds. He soon got into studying taxonomy and excelled in it. Roosevelt overcame his poor with many activities as he grew older. He did wrestling, riding, hunting, and swimming. Boxing was one of his favorites sports. He even managed to permanently injure one of his eyes during a boxing match.
Roosevelt liked to take initiative. Therefore when he became impatient about not being able to get into any military action he resigned his Navy post in May 1898 to serve as lieutenant colonel under Wood. Roosevelt gathered himself a handful of volunteers and created what we as the Rough Riders. The Rough Riders became famous after Roosevelt ordered them to charge Sanuan Hill. They did so successfully and Roosevelt came back from battle a legend and thus beginning

Theodore Roosevelt
26th president of the United States (1901-09) and writer, explorer, and soldier, who expanded the powers of the presidency and of the federal government on the side of public interest in conflicts between big business and big labour. He also engaged the nation in affairs of Asia and Europe. He won the Nobel Prize for Peace in 1906 for mediating the end of the Russo-Japanese War, and he promoted the construction of the Panama Canal (1904-14). The early years.
Roosevelt was born into a moderately wealthy family of Dutch ancestry; his mother, Martha Bulloch of Georgia, was of Scots-Irish and Huguenot descent. He received an excellent education from private tutors and at Harvard College; he was one of the few presidents endowed with an encompassing intellectual curiosity. In 1880 he entered Columbia University Law School. But historical writing and politics soon lured him away from a legal career. During the same year he married Alice Hathaway Lee of Boston and after her death, in 1884, married Edith Kermit Carow, with whom he lived for the rest of his life at "Sagamore Hill," a mansion near Oyster Bay, Long Island, N.Y.
Roosevelt returned home just when Thomas C. Platt, the Republican boss of New York, was looking for a respectable candidate for governor. Platt distrusted him, but, upon Roosevelt's promise that he would not attack the machine, he was easily elected. An excellent governor, he removed several corrupt politicians from office and over Platt's opposition secured a corporation franchise tax and a civil service system. Enraged, Platt maneuvered Roosevelt into the 1900 nomination for vice president on the McKinley ticket and thus secured his elimination from state politics.

http://1912.history.ohio-state.edu/RooseveltBio.htm
Theodore Roosevelt (1858-1919) served as the twenty-sixth president of the United States. Roosevelt was a politician whose popularity extended beyond his partisan supporters. Affectionately known as "Teddy, " he was a man of wide intellectual interests and a forceful personality that proved attractive to many Americans. Roosevelt's restless energy, personal ambitions, and commitment to a federal executive branch with large powers led eventually in 1912 to his revolt from the Republican party, which had been his political home since his youth, in favor of forming and leading as presidential candidate the Progressive Party (of 1912). T.R. came from the privileged background of a moderately wealthy New York City family. As a child, he suffered from severe asthma attacks. Exercise and outdoor activities seemed to help with the affliction, and later in life Roosevelt would advocate what he called the strenuous life; he also became a dedicated conservationist and nature lover. After private tutoring, the young Roosevelt earned his baccalaureate degree at Harvard University. A man with tremendous physical energy, and of wide ranging curiosity and considerable intellectual ability, Roosevelt subsequently earned much of his living from writing books and magazine articles. Roosevelt also as a young man entered public service. At the age of 23 he was elected to the New York State Assembly, or legislature. In a highly partisan age fraught with corruption, the young Republican fought corruption and his party's machine politics. The young reformer suffered defeats, and he actually lived in the Dakota Territory for two years on a ranch. When Roosevelt returned to New York, he was appointed to federal office, service on the U.S. Civil Service Commission (1889-95) and as president of the New York City Board of Police Commissioners (1895-97).

Roosevelt Biography Appreciation ... Web Links Theodore Roosevelt was the first American President to take seriously the concept of the protection of nature. He not only took it seriously but, like everything he did, he acted on his convictions "with vigor." He increased the size of the national forest system by 400%. He set the precedent of using the Antiquities Act of 1906 to create National Monuments, a precedent followed by all subsequent Presidents except Nixon, Regan and Bush. He pursued a balanced approach of preservation and sustained productivity for natural resources such as water and forests. He was a leader in promoting recreation in the wilderness to enhance personal growth. The Grand Canyon was one of the places he saved using the powers granted the president under the Antiquities Act. You have only to imagine the canyon stripped of various layers of history for mining and dotted with high rise hotels to understand why he is honored by the Ecology Hall of Fame. Lieutenant Colonel Theodore Roosevelt distinguished himself by acts of bravery on 1 July 1898, near Santiago de Cuba, Republic of Cuba, while leading a daring charge up San Juan Hill. Lieutenant Colonel Roosevelt, in total disregard for his personal safety, and accompanied by only four or five men, led a desperate and gallant charge up San Juan Hill, encouraging his troops to continue the assault through withering enemy fire over open countryside. Facing the enemy's heavy fire, he displayed extraordinary bravery throughout the charge, and was the first to reach the enemy trenches, where he quickly killed one of the enemy with his pistol, allowing his men to continue the assault. His leadership and valor turned the tide in the Battle for San Juan Hill. Lieutenant Colonel Roosevelt's extraordinary heroism and devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.

Theodore Roosevelt 1858-1919
On October 28, 1858, Theodore Roosevelt was born into one of the wealthiest and most well-established families in New York. His father, Theodore Roosevelt Sr., was a descendant of the original group of Dutch merchants who made their fortunes at building New York harbor into one of the most prosperous ports in America. Theodore Sr. was a gentleman and a glassware merchant. His wife, Martha Bulloch, was descended from the southern "aristocracy" of Georgia. Together, they belonged to the uppermost echelons of New York society. Not at all surrounded by the type of men he would come to champion in years to come, Theodore Jr. was well-positioned to lead a life of privilege and leisure.
Despite the wealth and social position of his family, Roosevelt's young life was far from easy. He chronically suffered from violent attacks of asthma and poor eyesight. Yet his illness inspired him to embrace life all the more fully. To improve his health, he boxed and lifted dumbbells in a room in his home which he had converted into a gymnasium.
During his early years in politics, Roosevelt enjoyed success in his professional life but suffered personal tragedy privately. In 1884 his mother died of typhoid fever. Two days later, his wife died after giving birth to their first child, Alice Lee. Although he would go on to marry Edith K. Carow, a family friend since childhood, he continued to blame himself for his "inconstancy" to the memory of Alice. On second marriages, he wrote, "I have always considered that they argued weakness in man's character. You could not reproach me one-half as bitterly as I reproach myself."

Scope and Contents:
Correspondence of Theodore Roosevelt, President of the United States. This collection of Roosevelt manuscripts was assembled mainly by Paul V. Bunn, who first came to Roosevelt's attention in 1893 as a civil service examiner when Roosevelt was commissioner. A fervent admirer of Roosevelt, Bunn was a St. Louis hardware dealer and secretary of the local Chamber of Commerce. In 1912 Roosevelt described him as an old and valued friend, and a 'foursquare North Carolina ex-Democrat.' Carbon copies of Bunn's letters to Roosevelt and Roosevelt's usually brief replies are included. A number of other Roosevelt letters are to William Rockhill Nelson, publisher of the Kansas City Star; William H. Moody, United States Attorney General and Supreme Court justice; and Henry B. Needham, journalist and special commissioner to investigate conditions in the Canal Zone in 1908. The remainder of the collection is a group of miscellaneous letters and notes related to Roosevelt's career as civil service commissioner, governor of New York, assistant secretary of the navy, president, and presidential candidate in 1912.
