    Theodore Roosevelt (1858-1919)
Roosevelt was born in 1858 in Manhattan, New York City. As a child, Roosevelt suffered from a series of illnesses, particularly asthma. He did not receive any formal schooling but was educated by private tutors. He entered Harvard University, Cambridge, Massachusetts in 1876. Roosevelt was active in student affairs, both sporting and academic. He completed his degree in 1880. He gained admission to Columbia Law School in New York City but left in 1881 to run for a seat in the New York State assembly. Roosevelt was elected as a Republican and was re-elected in 1882 and 1883. He rose to lead the Republicans in the chamber but left state politics in 1884. After a spell as a cattle rancher in Dakota Territory he returned to New York City to campaign for mayor in 1886 but was defeated. Before re-entering public service in 1889, Roosevelt concentrated on writing. A prolific non-fiction author, Roosevelt wrote nearly 20 books, including a four-volume history of America's westward expansion published from 1889-1896. In 1889 Republican President Benjamin Harrison appointed him as a member to the US Civil Service Commission. In 1895 he became President of the New York City Police Board. Two years later, Republican President William McKinley appointed him Assistant Secretary to the Navy. Roosevelt strongly supported expanding the US's naval power as a means to increase America's presence in world affairs. In 1898 Roosevelt saw combat as commander of the First US Volunteer Cavalry Regiment, known as The Rough Riders, in Cuba during the Spanish-American War. Rising to the rank of colonel, reports of his leadership and heroism aided Roosevelt's public profile.

    Theodore Roosevelt (1858-1919)
U.S. president. Author. Big-game hunter. Political reformer. Cavalryman. Conservationist. Rancher. Nobel Peace Prize winner. Few individuals have lived as eclectic, as active, or as productive a life as Theodore Roosevelt (1858-1919) did. On October 27, his birthday, give your students the opportunity to learn about the 26th president of the United States. Check out some great Web sites for teaching about Theodore Roosevelt. Theodore Roosevelt was, in many ways, one of the most influential and accomplished leaders in American history. The 26th president, known as a "trust buster," broke up some of the nation's largest corporations, helped secure the passage of the Meat Inspection Act for consumer protection, and greatly expanded the powers and responsibilities of the presidency. In foreign affairs, Roosevelt reversed the previous policy of isolationism and ensured the country its place as a world leader. Perhaps his greatest and most lasting contribution was in the area of conservation. Through the creation of national forests, federal bird reservations, and national game preserves, Roosevelt protected more than 200 million acres of land through the federal government.

Theodore Roosevelt (18581919). Theodore Roosevelt was the twenty-sixthpresident of the United States and Eleanor Roosevelt s uncle.
    http://www.nps.gov/elro/glossary/roosevelt-theodore.htm

    Theodore Roosevelt (1858-1919)
Theodore Roosevelt was the twenty-sixth president of the United States and Eleanor Roosevelt's uncle. He was also Franklin Roosevelt's progressive political values. So integral was TR's vision to his younger relatives that at least one historian has dubbed the twentieth century, "the Roosevelt century" in recognition of the trio's wide-ranging influence on American life and thought. As governor, TR supported many of the causes that ER would later champion, among them centralized, interventionist government, regulation of women's and children's labor, and taxes on utility and insurance interests. However, TR's progressive views did not endear him to conservative Republicans, who decided to sideline him by nominating him for vice-president in 1900. Their plan backfired when President William McKinley was assassinated in 1901 and TR replaced the fallen leader. Like FDR, TR came to the presidency during a time of economic and political change. America was in the throes of industrialization and corporate monopolies were both powerful and unregulated. Europe was in the midst of an arms race as Germany and England vied with each other to see who could build the most modern fleet. Their rivalry was further exacerbated by the European countries' desire to colonize Africa and Asia. In the Far East, Japan was also flexing its military muscles and looking for territory to conquer.
