The only limit to our realization of tomorrow will be our doubts of today. New ideas can be good and bad, just the same as old ones. One thing is sure. We have to do something. We have to do the best we know how at the moment. If it doesn't turn out right, we can modify it as we go along. When you come to the end of your rope, tie a knot and hang on.

    Franklin Delano Roosevelt Born: Birthplace:
Hyde Park, N.Y. Franklin Delano Roosevelt was born in Hyde Park, N.Y., on Jan. 30, 1882. A Harvard graduate, he attended Columbia Law School and was admitted to the New York bar. In 1910, he was elected to the New York State Senate as a Democrat. Reelected in 1912, he was appointed assistant secretary of the navy by Woodrow Wilson the next year. In 1920, his radiant personality and his war service resulted in his nomination for vice president as James M. Cox's running mate. After his defeat, he returned to law practice in New York. In Aug. 1921, Roosevelt was stricken with infantile paralysis while on vacation at Campobello, New Brunswick. After a long and gallant fight, he recovered partial use of his legs. In 1924 and 1928, he led the fight at the Democratic national conventions for the nomination of Gov. Alfred E. Smith of New York, and in 1928 Roosevelt was himself induced to run for governor of New York. He was elected, and was reelected in 1930. In 1932, Roosevelt received the Democratic nomination for president and immediately launched a campaign that brought new spirit to a weary and discouraged nation. He defeated Hoover by a wide margin. His first term was characterized by an unfolding of the New Deal program, with greater benefits for labor, the farmers, and the unemployed, and the progressive estrangement of most of the business community.

From the Edward Bruce papers, 1917-1960, can be found correspondence between Edward "Ned" Bruce and Franklin D. Roosevelt relating to Bruce's work as Chief of one of Roosevelt's New Deal art programs, the Section of Painting and Sculpture (later the Section of Fine Arts), a program in the Treasury Department later reorganized under the Public Buildings Administration of the Federal Works Agency, established to administer the decoration of public buildings. Bruce was a key figure in Roosevelt's efforts to lift the country out of the Depression through relief projects, having directed one of the earliest programs, the Public Works of Art Project, from December 1933 - June 1934. In this brief exchange of September 1940, Bruce sends FDR a sketch of "men cutting ice" by artist Waldo Peirce, "an excellent artist [who] has done some good jobs for us." The picture was "one of the pictures you had liked when you saw the show [of New Deal art] at the Corcoran." Roosevelt responds on September 19th to say that he is "personally and very deeply appreciative of that delightful gift... chiefly because it was exactly what I had seen in the neighborhood of Hyde Park on Dutchess County ponds... I expect to put it into my own personal room in the new library at Hyde Park."

    Franklin D. Roosevelt (1882-1945)
Franklin Delano Roosevelt was born on January 30, 1882 at his parents' estate in Hyde Park, New York. His parents were members of the New York aristocracy. His father, James, was a country gentleman who made money in railroads and coal. His mother, Sara , was a strong-willed woman who adored her only child and remained a central figure in his life until her death in 1941. His father died in 1900. FDR’s childhood in Hyde Park instilled in him a love of the Hudson Valley, farming and rural people. His lifelong interest in forestry helped shape some of the policies and programs of the New Deal, particularly the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC). After being educated at home by private tutors, FDR entered Groton, an elite private school in Massachusetts, in 1896. Endicott Peabody , the head of the school, became an important influence in FDR’s life instilling in him a strong sense of civic responsibility. One of the most significant events while he was at Groton was a talk given by his distant cousin

Franklin D. Roosevelt FRANKLIN DELANO ROOSEVELT, (1882-1945), 32nd president of the United States. Roosevelt became president in March 1933 at the depth of the Great Depression, was reelected for an unprecedented three more terms, and died in office in April 1945, less than a month before the surrender of Germany in WORLD WAR II . Despite an attack of poliomyelitis, which paralyzed his legs in 1921, he was a charismatic optimist whose confidence helped sustain the American people during the strains of economic crisis and world war. He was one of America's most controversial leaders. Conservatives claimed that he undermined states' rights and individual liberty. Leftists found him timid and conventional in attacking the Depression. Others thought him devious and inconsistent and uninformed about economics. Some of these claims were well founded. Though Roosevelt labored hard to end the Depression, he had limited success. It was not until 1939 and 1940, with the onset of heavy defense spending before World War II, that prosperity returned. Roosevelt also displayed limitations in his handling of foreign policy. In the 1930's he was slow to warn against the menace of fascism, and during the war he relied too heavily on his charm and personality in the conduct of diplomacy. Still, Roosevelt's historical reputation is deservedly high. In attacking the Great Depression he did much to develop a partial welfare state in the United States and to make the federal government an agent of social and economic reform. His administration indirectly encouraged the rise of organized labor and greatly invigorated the Democratic party. His foreign policies, while occasionally devious, were shrewd enough to sustain domestic unity and the allied coalition in World War II. Roosevelt was a president of stature.
