Attempt to cash in on P.I. craze, with P.I. STORM KENNEDY investigating murder. The usual Rohmer touches allegedly abound, including wild coincidences, various macabre and supernatural ramblings, unfortunate stereotypes and pure silliness. According to the dedication, Sax's wife Rose Elizabeth Rohmer helped write this. Sax Rohmer, of course, was best known for creating the evil Dr. Fu Manchu , first introduced in a short story in 1912, who went on to become one of the all-time great supervillians, and the personification of the Yellow Peril. His career lasted for decades and included appearances in short stories, novels, radio and film. Yet, despite his success, rohmer, thanks to some spectacularly bad investments and even worse management of his finances, lived in poverty most of his life. NOVELS

The brilliant and evil Chinese scientist Dr. Fu Manchu is on a hunt for the tomb of Genghis Khan, whose sword and mask are said to contain supernatural powers. British agent Nayland Smith and Sir Lionel Barton, an official at the British Museum, hope to find the tomb before Dr. Manchu can carry out his nefarious scheme of world domination. But shortly after Sir Lionel reveals his plans for an expedition, he is kidnapped by Manchu's henchmen. Barton's daughter Sheila is determined to continue her father's work and accompanies the team on the expedition, along with her fiance Terrence Granville. When Terry tries to set a trap for Dr. Manchu with a fake mask and sword, he is captured and finds himself caught precariously between Dr. Fu Manchu's ingenious tortures and the amorous attentions of the Doctor's daughter, Fah Lo See. To make matters worse, Dr. Fu Manchu has invented a terrifying "death ray."
The ever-popular character of Dr. Fu Manchu is the brainchild of Sax Rohmer (1883-1959). The English writer, whose real name is Arthur Sarsfield Ward, created thriller novels based on characters such as the female criminal mastermind Sumuru and the Parisian Detective Gaston Max. Rohmer's most successful series by far was the Fu Manchu novels, which spanned from 1913's

Articles - Science Fiction Art by Jeff Miller
It can be argued that the origins of Science Fiction art date back to the works of Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519). While his drawings were definitely art, and inarguably science, many of his drawings were of devices that did not exist during his time. Thus, while his elaborate plans for submersible ships, tanks and flying machines were made seriously, they were also fantasies of fiction. Leonardo da Vince might therefore be considered the first science fiction illustrator. Some of the most famous early illustrations that set a standard for early science fiction works were created by the English artist Sir John Tenniel (1820-1914), who rose to fame as the illustrator of Lewis Carroll ’s Alice in Wonderland and its sequel, Through the Looking Glass (1871). While not considered science fiction, Lewis Carroll’s works were fantasy and contemporary satire that attracted great attention. The elaborate and imaginative pen and ink drawings that accompanied these books became standards for SF literature for decades to come.

The Return of Dr. Fu-Manchu (MP3 CD)
This is the second of the 14 Fu Manchu books that Sax Rohmer gave us.
Like the first, it is very episodic in nature, revealing its origin as a series of short magazine stories.
A reading of the previous book WOULD be helpful for a full enjoyment of this volume, but is not absolutely necessary.
Like the first book, this one is jam-packed with fast-moving action and bizarre adventure.
It is surprisingly well written; sometimes even elegantly written.
Just note the description of the seedy East End in Chapter 11 and you may want to upgrade your assessment of Rohmer as a wordsmith.
Anyway, this particular installment of Nayland Smith and Dr. Petrie's war against the evil genius Fu Manchu includes kidnappings, wire-jacket torture, poisonous cats, snake murders, albino peacocks, killer apes, quicksand, a haunted house, rat torture, mummy attacks and on and on. It's really remarkable how much stuff Rohmer packs into one short book.
