Sax Rohmer
Profile
Novelist, born Arthur Henry Ward in Birmingham on 15 February 1883, the son of Irish immigrant parents who moved to London in 1886. Little is known of his early life except that he had an ambition to serve in the Civil Service in the East. On failing the entrance examination he progressed from being a clerk to more literary pursuits, including writing for the music hall. His early success with short stories led to his writing The sins of Severac Babylon His early interest in Oriental mysticism was used this enthusiasm in most of his subsequent work. Fu Manchu, his most memorable character, became very popular and appeared in fifteen books. The villain was the leader of a secret society at Limehouse, in the East End of London, and first appeared in The Mystery of Dr. Fu Manchu , serialized 1912-13 and published in book form a year later. Arthur Ward dabbled in further theatrical writing and adaptation but found that the niche he had created with exotic oriental thrillers was a winner and magazine serializations continued to appear until after World War II. When such publishing was on the wane, he moved to the USA, in 1947, where there were many more opportunities for radio and film work. He sold the media rights to Fu Manchu for four million dollars in 1955. Despite his success, he was never considered to be of significant literary importance. Although his writing shows imagination, the simple colourful style, the rather repetitive plots and the stylized characters led to his work being dismissed as second-rate.

Sax Rohmer (1883-1959)
Sax Rohmer, aka British journalist Arthur Sarsfield Ward, invented literature's most devillish arch-fiend when he introduced the deliciously sinister Dr. Fu-Manchu in 1912. What's more, when nearing the age of 70 he even exposed our unsuspecting world to a female counterpart of the devil doctor. Sumuru appeared in 1950, and forever after scholars have debated which is the more tasteful title: The English edition "The Sins of Sumuru" or the American "Nude in Mink". You can't but admire a pensioner that can think up titles like that! Our own effort, the upcoming WHIO episode named "The Insidious Cheese" - although bold - somehow falls a little short. But in due time, we will get it right. Then it's our turn to autograph books wrapped in silk dressing robes, unlit pipes thrust firmly between our stiff upper lips! So there!
After being out of print for far too long, Fu-Manchu is now back. Here's the three first novels:
The Insidious Dr. Fu-Manchu

http://www.xs4all.nl/~embden11/Engels/rohmer.htm
Sax Rohmer Pseudonym of Arthur Henry Ward. He was born in Birmingham but shortly after his birth, his parents moved to London. His schooling was mostly done by his father. At an early age he started writing stories and these were sent to various periodicals. Unfortunately these stories met no succes.
After school he found a job with the Hong Kong and Shanghai bank. In 1903 he left the bank and became a newspaper reporter. He wrote two stories which were accepted by a magazine. After that he began writing for the stage. His short story writing also continued. In 1913 his first 'Fu Manchu' novel was published. It was an instant succes. His second and third novel were also successes.
After the First World War he stopped writing Fu Manchu stories. Instead he concentrated on occult and non-occult novels. The 1930s saw a resurrection of Fu Manchu and nearly every year a new novel was published. His last years were not comfortable. He died as a result of complications after he contracted Asiatic 'flu.
