The name Roget could soon become a virtual synonym for the word "synonym".
For those who use Roget's Thesaurus it is one of the three most important books ever printed...along with The Bible and Webster's Dictionary.
In order to communicate one's exact intention...or one's precise meaning, the Thesaurus, being a list of synonyms or verbal equivalents, is a necessary tool.
The first draft of the Thesaurus was written in 1805, two years before Webster started on his dictionary. However for a period of 47 years Dr. Roget used his manuscript as his personal, secret, treasure trove. Not until he was 73 years old did he decide to reveal and publish this great manuscript.
Since 1852, Roget's Thesaurus has never been out of print. In fact, each succeeding edition has increased the popularity of the work. The original 15,000 words included in the 1805 manuscript has increased to over a quarter of a million in the 1992 edition (the tenth printing). With such an increase in size, it is encouraging to notice that the basic content still remains intact..... for example, where the 1805 Thesaurus traces the word:
existence: "Ens, entity, being, existence, essence...", the 1992 Thesaurus contains

PETER MARK ROGET 1779-1869 Although Roget's association with Manchester was short, he was an officer of both the Literary and Philosophical Society and the first secretary of the Portico Library when it was founded in 1806. He was a remarkable man in the fields of medicine, mathematics and literature. Peter Roget was born in London, the only son of Rev. John Roget, a Swiss born pastor in the French Protestant Church in Threadneedle Street. His mother was a sister of Sir Samuel Romilly. Peter's father died when Peter was young and following this the family moved to Edinburgh. There he entered the university at the age of 14, studied mathematics and medicine and graduated with the degree of MD at the age of 19. Later he studied at the London Medical Schools under Baillie, Cruickshank, Wilson, Heberden and Horne. In 1802, during the Peace of Amiens, he visited Paris and then his father's home town of Geneva, while acting as tutor for the sons of a Manchester merchant. When hostilities resumed, Roget was imprisoned for two months but then allowed to return to England in 1803. For a time he was the travelling attendant of the Marquis of Landsdowne. Roget was particularly interested in tuberculosis and in the effects of inhaling laughing gas (nitrous oxide). Later in life he wrote an article on Thomas Beddoes of Bristol, famous for his investigation of gases of possible medical use. When

John Ferriar
John Ferriar
Born in 1761 at Oxnam in Roxburghshire, John Ferriar was a famous physician in Manchester, as well as a writer and literary critic. He had studied medicine at Edinburgh University, graduated in 1781, and worked in a practice in Stockton-on-Tees, before moving to manchester around 1785.
In 1789 Ferriar was appointed physician at Manchester Infirmary, where he introduced many reforms and practices to help in the healthy recovery of patients. His campaigning led to the establishment of a Board of Health, the prohibition of cellars as living quarters, limits on domestic overcrowding and many other sanitary reforms which improved the health and living conditions of the poor people of Manchester.
He established the concept of the isolation ward for serious infectious diseases (the "fever ward"), both in the Infirmary and at the Stockport hospitals. He advocated shorter working hours, restrictions on child labour, and the introduction of public baths to improve hygiene.

'... If you intend to write any thing in the Lancet in reply to its attack on yourself, I would beg to suggest that it would be adviseable for you to wait until the next number, in which the correspondence with Dr Lee is promised to be given, comes out, as I have been informed it will contain other letters , besides those published in the Literary Gazette of last Saturday, which you have probably seen. By this delay, you will have an opportunity of answering, once for all, the whole of the charges so malignantly brought forwards ...'
