EDWIN ARLINGTON ROBINSON
THE HOUSE ON THE HILL This poem provides an example of a villanelle.
They are all gone away,
The House is shut and still,
There is nothing more to say. Through broken walls and gray
The winds blow bleak and shrill:
They are all gone away. Nor is there one to-day
To speak them good or ill:
There is nothing more to say. Why is it then we stray
Around that sunken sill?
They are all gone away, And our poor fancy-play
For them is wasted skill: There is nothing more to say. There is ruin and decay To Villanelle in the Glossary Alphabetic Page Version Entire Glossary Version In the House on the Hill: They are all gone away, There is nothing more to say.

BOOKS on-line Whenever Richard Cory went down town AN OLD STORY
Whenever Richard Cory went down town,
We people on the pavement looked at him:
He was a gentleman from sole to crown,
Clean favored, and imperially slim.
And he was always quietly arrayed,
And he was always human when he talked; But still he fluttered pulses when he said, "Good-morning", and he glittered when he walked. And he was rich - yes, richer than a king - And admirably schooled in every grace: In fine, we thought that he was everything To make us wish that we were in his place. So on we worked, and waited for the light, And went without the meat, and cursed the bread; And Richard Cory, one calm summer night, Went home and put a bullet through his head. AN OLD STORY Strange that I did not know him then, That friend of mine!

Edwin Arlington Robinson Born at Head Tide on the Sheepscot River, Edwin Arlington Robinson (1869 - 1935) grew up in Gardiner, Maine, before moving on to Harvard College and New York. After years of poverty and struggle, Robinson emerged as America's most acclaimed poet of the early 20th century, winning the Pulitzer Prize for Collected Poems The Man Who Died Twice (1925) and Tristram (1928). Though critical interest in his long works has faded, his short, sharp psychological poems including "Richard Corey," "Miniver Cheevy," "Flammonde," and "Claverly's" remain popular. Set in and around fictional Tilbury Town (modeled on Gardiner of the poet's childhood) they are frequently anthologized and were brought together by Lawrence Thompson in the collection, Tilbury Town in 1953. They offer unique insight into small town life and people in late 19th-century Maine. close window

In 1899, Robinson settled in New York City. Although his third volume of verse, Captain Craig (1902), was poorly received by critics, it attracted the attention of President Theodore Roosevelt, who secured Robinson a job in the New York customshouse. He finally achieved critical recognition with The Man against the Sky (1916). Thereafter he concentrated on long psychological narrative poems, such as Avon's Harvest The Man Who Died Twice (1924; Pulitzer Prize), Dionysus in Doubt (1925), and the Arthurian romances Merlin Lancelot (1920), and Tristram (1928; Pulitzer Prize). A quiet, introverted man, Robinson never married and became legendary for his reclusiveness. Although his later poetry reveals a deep consciousness of social issues, an experimentation with symbolism, and an increasingly optimistic view of human destiny, his most lasting work is probably his early verse. "Miniver Cheevy" and "Richard Cory" are among the most famous of his brief, dramatic poems. Volumes of his collected poems were published in 1921 (Pulitzer Prize), 1937, and years after his work fell out of popular and critical fashion, in 1999.

Leaving out the foolishness and all I never meant ?
Somewhere in me there’s a woman, if you know the way to find her,

As on two that have no longer much of anything to tell. " (The Man Against the Sky) Edwin Arlington ROBINSON " Ne voudrez-vous donc jamais me voir comme je suis, John Gorham,

Dear Friends
The Children of the Night
DEAR friends, reproach me not for what I do, Nor counsel me, nor pity me; nor say That I am wearing half my life away For bubble-work that only fools pursue. And if my bubbles be too small for you, Blow bigger then your own: the games we play To fill the frittered minutes of a day, Good glasses are to read the spirit through. And whose reads may get him some shrewd skill; And some unprofitable scorn resign, To praise the very thing that he deplores; So, friends (dear friends), remember, if you will, The shame I win for singing is all mine, The gold I miss for dreaming is all yours.

Edwin Arlington Robinson
Edwin Arlington Robinson's poetry bridged the gap between two literary eras. Like most 19th-century poetry, his work was traditional in form. Yet like the work of modern poets, his poetry was innovative in content, probing beneath the surface of human behavior and exploring the psychological realities of the inner self. Robinson was raised in Gardiner, Maine, a small town that served as the model for Tilbury Town, the fictional setting of many of his finest poems. When his father, a successful lumber merchant died, Robinson's family suddenly found itself living in poverty. Robinson attended Harvard for two years before his family's financial problems forced him to leave. He returned to Gardiner and began writing poetry, depending on friends and patrons for financial support. Just before the turn of the century, Robinson published two unsuccessful collections of poetry, The Torrent and the Night Before (1897) and Children of the Night (1898), at his own expense. Hoping to improve his financial situation, he moved to New York. As it turned out, his situation did improve when President Theodore Roosevelt appointed him to a post at a New York customhouse. Robinson also discovered success as a poet when his fourth volume of poetry

I HEARD one who said: "Verily,
What word have I for children here?
Your Dollar is your only Word,
The wrath of it your only fear. "You build it altars tall enough
To make you see but you are blind;
You cannot leave it long enough To look before you or behind. "When Reason beckons you to pause, You laugh and say that you know best; But what it is you know, you keep As dark as ingots in a chest. "You laugh and answer, 'We are young; Oh, leave us now, and let us grow:' Not asking how much more of this Will Time endure or Fate bestow. "Because a few complacent years Have made your peril of your pride, Think you that you are to go on Forever pampered and untried?

Edwin Arlington Robinson
Born in Alna, Maine, Edwin Arlington Robinson is considered to be one of the most important poets of the first half of the twentieth century, ranking with the likes of T.S. Eliot, William Butler Yeats, Robert Frost, and William Carlos Williams. He spent his early years in Gardiner, Maine where by the age of twenty knew that “I was doomed, or elected, or sentenced for life, to the writing of poetry". Robinson came into the national spotlight when his book of poetry, Children of the Night came to the attention of President Theodore Roosevelt, who became an ardent supporter of Robinson. He was awarded three Pulitzer Prizes for poetry, Collected Poems (1922), The Man Who Died Twice (1925) Tristam (1928). In all Robinson published twenty-eight books of poetry and several plays in his lifetime. For more information visit: http://www.gpl.lib.me.us/ear.htm or tp://ait.org.tw/ait/CIS/r2.htm
