Mary Roberts Rinehart - (1876-1958) Allegheny By James Cooper I. Biography Mary Roberts Rinehart was born in Allegheny, Pennsylvania (now part of Pittsburgh) on August 12, 1876, and she died September 22, 1958. She was born left-handed, in the days when this was looked upon as irrational and unladylike. To make her use her right hand, she had her left hand tied behind her back. During her lifetime, she was a very successful mystery writer and playwright. Rinehart lived in Allegheny for most of her life, and wrote most of her mystery stories in Allegheny. Rinehart got her first start in writing when she was in high school. She sold a couple of stories to a local newspaper for a dollar a piece, and had them published in the newspaper. The Circular Staircase , took place in Pittsburgh and for the first time showed how mystery and comedy could flow together. Her mystery stories were so good and well liked that she was compared to one of the most recognized mystery writers ever, Agatha Christie. Her mystery stories were not only compared to those of Agatha Christie, in her prime her writings were rated over Christie. Rinehart's stories had a tendency to be very well-liked. It was because of this reason that Rinehart had one of her stories turned into a play. The story was originally called

  • Pennsylvania: By the Book
By Cheryl A. Petersohn Pennsylvania was founded by an author who got into trouble for his writings. No wonder this state has such a distinguished literary heritage. The Keystone State provides rich natural and intellectual resources, a varied but essentially moderate climate, and room to grow. Since its founding in 1682 by William Penn, himself the author of more than one hundred books and pamphlets supporting religious toleration, Pennsylvania has been home to countless writers. Penn's "Holy Experiment," planned to be an ideal commonwealth in America away from religious persecution, has a long history of authors whose works promote free expression of ideas and creative experimentation. This short overview of Pennsylvania authors can merely scratch the surface of a literary history that favorably follows in the footsteps of Penn's most famous work, The Great Cause of Liberty of Conscience.

Had She but Known: A Biography of Mary Roberts Rinehart
    by Charlotte MacLeod
ward-winning author Charlotte MacLeod examines the life of America's first bestselling suspense novelist, playwright, highly regarded war correspondent, and explorer. The mystery novels of Pittsburgh-born Mary Roberts Rinehart (1876-1958) made her one of the first literary celebrities of the 20th century. The public knew Rinehart from magazine serials and her essays in the Saturday Evening Post . Generals and European royalty permitted her to be one of the few WWI correspondents reporting from the trenches. Broadway impresarios turned her suspense plays into smash successes. Several of her novels have never gone out of print. Her explorations of the American West, when the territory was still raw, were legendary; her fascination with Native American culture enlightened millions.

Mathematics: From the Birth of Numbers , Jan Gullberg. $58.50, new.
This book is amazing. Here's the great Martin Gardner's blurb from the back: "An awesome achievement. Accurate, clearly written, and charmingly illustrated, Jan Gullberg's new survey of the world of mathematics has many merits that distinguish it from earlier surveys such as Lancelot Hogben's long-popular Mathematics for the Million . First of all, it is up to date, catching recent advances not in previous accounts, such as the unexpected proofs of Fermat's last theorem and the four-color map theorem, the new Mersenne primes, and exciting developments in fractal theory. Moreover, Gullberg writes with unusual clarity, and he has enlivened his text with amusing illustrations, apt quotations, historical backgrounds, and humorous asides. His book will be a standard reference for many decades." Inside just jacket: This gently guided, profusely illustrated Grand Tour of the world of mathematics takes the reader on a long and fascinating journey - from the dual invention of numbers and language, through the primary realms of arithmetic, algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and calculus, to the final destination of differential equations, with excursions into symbolic logic, set theory, topology, fractals, probability, and assorted other mathematical byways. Mathematics: From the Birth of Numbers is unique among popular books on mathematics in combining and engaging, easy-to-read history of the subject with a comprehensive mathematical survey text. Intended, in the author's words, "for the benefit of those who never studied the subject, those who think they have forgotten what they once learned, and those with a sincere desire for more knowledge," it links mathematics to the humanities, linguistics, the natural sciences, and technology.

    Historisk oversigt over kvindelige kriminalforfattere
