Rinehart, Mary Roberts
Mary Roberts Rinehart EB Inc. (1876-1958), writer, reporter, and playwright Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on August 12, 1876, Mary Roberts graduated from the Pittsburgh Training School for Nurses in 1896. That same year she married Stanley M. Rinehart. She and her husband started a family, and she took up writing in 1903 as a result of difficulties created by financial losses. Her first story appeared in Munsey's Magazine in 1903. The Circular Staircase (1908), her first book and first mystery, was an immediate success, and the following year The Man in Lower Ten, which had been serialized earlier, reinforced her popular success. Thereafter she wrote steadily, averaging about a book a year. A long series of comic tales about the redoubtable "Tish," Letitia Carberry, appeared as serials in the Saturday Evening Post over a number of years and as a series of novels beginning with The Amazing Adventures of Letitia Carberry Rinehart served as a war correspondent during World War I and later described her experiences in several books, notably Kings, Queens and Pawns

The Breaking Point
Where There's A Will Mary Roberts Rinehart (1876-1958)
American novelist and playwright best known for her mystery stories. Rinehart served as a war correspondent during World War I and later described her experiences in several books, notably Kings, Queens and Pawns (1915). She produced as well a number of romances and nine plays. Most of the plays were written in collaboration with Avery Hopwood; her greatest successes were Seven Days, produced in New York in 1909, and The Bat, derived from The Circular Staircase and produced in 1920. She remained best known, however, as a writer of mysteries, and the growing popularity of that genre after World War II led to frequent republication of her works. Her most memorable tales combined murder, love, ingenuity, and humour in a style that was distinctly her own. Her autobiography, My Story, appeared in 1931 and was revised in 1948. At Rinehart's death her books had sold more than 10 million copies.

Ayn Rand (1905-1982) was an American author and social critic. Her books serve mainly as a means of expressing her philosophies. Literary critics tend to see them as marred by a tendency to instruct the reader.
Rand's best-known novels are The Fountainhead (1943) and Atlas Shrugged (1957). Both present a moral and economic philosophy, called Objectivism, based on individualism and self-interest. These novels express the belief that original ideas are the main force in the world and that creative individuals deserve to profit from their ideas. The heroes represent disciplined, rational people of action who reject organized religion. In The Fountainhead , an architect destroys a housing project in which his ideas had been altered. In Atlas Shrugged , one of the central characters calls a mind strike, during which all creative people withhold their ideas from the rest of the world. The strike reveals that society cannot exist without creative genius.
Rand was born in St. Petersburg, Russia. She moved to the United States in 1926 and became a U.S. citizen in 1931. Her novels

Lady Gregory (1852-1932) an Irish playwright and folklorist, helped launch the renaissance in Irish drama associated with Dublin's Abbey Theatre. She excelled in writing lively dialogue and creating simple, strong dramatic situations. Her best-known plays include The Rising of the Moon Spreading the News , and The Workhouse Ward (all 1904-1908).
Isabella Augusta Persse was born in County Galway and married Sir William Gregory in 1881. She wrote most of her plays in "Kiltartan," the peasant dialect of her home district. She collected Irish folklore and poetry, pioneered in the use of peasant dialect, and invented the folk history play. Her retelling of the Celtic heroic myths in Cuchulain of Muirthemne (1902) and Gods and Fighting Men (1904) inspired many Irish writers, especially William Butler Yeats. Seventy Years , an autobiography, was published in 1976, after her death. Clare Boothe Luce (1903-1987) became famous for her activities in American politics and government. She was also a noted playwright. Luce served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1943 to 1947 as a Republican from Connecticut. She served as U.S. ambassador to Italy from 1953 to 1956. Luce became one of the first women to represent the United States in a major diplomatic post. She was appointed ambassador to Brazil in 1959, but resigned after winning Senate approval because several senators questioned her ability.
Luce's plays are noted for their sharp dialogue and sarcastic characterizations. Her most successful play
