Dezember 1926 in Valmont. RILKE: MAN AND POET
Introduction:
So much is written about the poetry of Rainer Maria Rilke; his life though is the best mirror of his existence. And what would Rilke, if it could be asked him now, find his most recommendable book? "Geschichte from lieben Gott" ("Stories from God") is perhaps the most accessible work by Rilke, just like his letters. And the poetry that shows his 'seeing' of reality. In one of his first poems Rilke speaks about his wish 'to grow deeply into life (and so beyond it)'. That is the theme that sounds through his work and that he expressed in accordance with his character in his work. His books speak about a searching for that moment of existence, for the string of deeper moments. That is the Way of his life. To what do we pay attention in our daily life? And what really is our earthly existence? Only some outer material existence, or is behind this another form? Or would we rather not ask ourselves the questions that spring from Rilke's work? Rilke himself searched for the answers and took the questions to be the invisible that slowly makes appear the answers. By living the questions. This catalogue is only partly a view of the books that Rilke wrote and that are written about him. He wrote many letters and from the books about him it appears that his life was more than poems, these are only traces of an existence.

Notebooks of Malte Laurids Brigge
Author Info: Rainer Maria Rilke
(Translated by Stephen Mitchell
[T]his hollow-eyed communer with angels, Greek torsos and death was not merely a selfish snob;
he was also an anti-Semite, a coward, a psychic vampire, a crybaby. He was a son who refused to
go to his dying father's bedside, a husband who exploited and abandoned his wife, a father who
almost never saw his daughter and who even stole from a special fund for her education to pay for
his first-class hotel rooms. He was a seducer of other men's wives, a pampered intellectual gigolo,
and a virtual parody of the soulful artiste who deems himself superior to ordinary people because
he is so tenderly sensitive, a delicate blossom easily punished by a passing breeze or sudden frost.
-Michael Dirda Washington Post Book World review of Life of a Poet : Rainer Maria Rilke By Ralph Freedman Loving another does not entitle one to their love in return, but being loved by another does place one under an obligation. This is the awful truth that Rainer Maria Rilke's semi autobiographical hero, Malte Laurids Brigge, seems to be trying to evade. In fact, this is very much the dilemma of modern man, for no matter how much we love God, our love will not necessarily influence Him, but His love for us places us under an obligation to Him. Of course, the easiest way out of this dilemma is simply to deny the existence of God, which has been the response of Modernity.

RILKE,
Paula Modersohn-Becker (1876-1907) Rainer Maria Rilke is enjoying great popularity. A search of the Internet reveals an abundance of web pages that feature his work. Most of the sites are in German, but many are in English. The numerous biographies highlight his poverty, depression, his restless wandering, troubled relationships with men, his short and sporadic relationships with women, some also discuss homosexuality. Indeed Rilke is a poet for modern times. All of his preferences, problems, foibles and flaws documented in great detail. Rainer Rilke was born in Prague, December 4, 1875. He died on December 29, 1926. Rilke was subject to a military education at an early age and then studied business. Neither of these areas interested him, and he never completed his university education. In 1897 he met Lou Andreas-Salome. She remained a part of his life for many years after their love affair ended. He later married the sculptor Clara Westhoff. The marriage lasted nearly one year.

January 4 ~  Those Who Really Love Literary Collections
"This is the miracle that happens e v e r y time to those who really love ; the more they g i v e the more they p o s s e s s ~ Rainer Maria Rilke German lyric poet Rainer Maria Rilke (1875-1926) was born in Prague and became internationally known for his collection, Duino Elegies and the Sonnets to Orpheus (1923), poems which celebrated human existence. "The purpose of life is to be defeated by greater and greater things," said Rilke who wrote with beauty and expressive power. The writer called his middle-class upbringing, "petit bourgeois" (lower middle class) and began his literary career at age 19 when he published a collection of love poems. He also worked for a time as the secretary to sculptor Auguste Rodin and their friendship helped Rilke learn to write with greater attention to detail. "We need, in love , to practice only this: letting each other go. For holding on comes easily; we do not need to learn it," believed Rilke, who wrote with strong imagery and was a major contributor to the symbolism movement of his time. His poetry celebrated the profound: love wisdom , growth and transformation, and death Live the questions ," he urged passionately and spent much of his life traveling throughout Europe to gather inspiration . "We live our lives, forever taking leave."
