Children Roxana Notes for Edwin Pope (Spouse 1) From "U.S. Senate Statistics: Edwin Pope Thayer", http://www.senate.gov/learning/stat_4m.html:
"He loved to tell the folks back home in Indianapolis the story about the Senate calendar - a story that he probably did not tell very often around the Senate. It had to do with his "tricking" the Senate into authorizing a veterans' hospital for that city. Here is how one reporter remembered that tale. "As secretary of the Senate, he prepared the calendar each week, always placing the bill to establish the hospital at the top of the list. Finally, a senator was reported to have said, `Let's pass the bill and get it out of the way.' The bill was passed."
Edwin Pope Thayer cared a great deal about his fellow war veterans. Not only had he served in the Spanish-American War as a regimental commander with Indiana's 158th Volunteers, but he had then continued for another twelve years as a colonel in his state's national guard. It was particularly fitting that he should count as his greatest public contribution the establishment of that veterans' hospital, which opened in 1932.
Thayer was born on December 15, 1864, in the Indianapolis suburb of Greenfield, where the "Hoosier Poet" James Whitcomb Riley edited the local newspaper. After high school, Thayer traveled forty miles from home to enroll in DePauw University. The first person he met on campus was James E. Watson. He and Watson became roommates and, after graduating in 1886, remained close friends for the rest of their lives. Thayer joined his father's business in his hometown, while Watson went off to law school. While Thayer was serving in the Spanish-American War, Watson was serving in the U.S. House of Representatives.

ANABAPTISTS AND THEIR ADVERSARIES
Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone. Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: show me thy faith without thy works, and I will show thee my faith by my works. Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble. James 2:17-19
I know thy works, that thou hast a name that thou livest, and art dead. - Rev. 3:1
The issue, between Martin Luther and the Anabaptists, was not over free salvation by grace; both believed that. The issue was regarding the new creature in Christ and living the gospel, which one professed. Although Luther detested the moral profli- gacy of the Catholic church, he still loved his German beer and was not prepared for the strict holiness of life, upon which the Baptists have historically insisted. For this reason, he came uncomfortably close to removing the book of James from the canon of Scripture, calling it the "epistle of straw." Baptists could neither welcome nor rejoice with Luther and the reformers, over the Reformers' newly re-discovered truth. Protestant loose living creeps through the pages of history, validating Anabaptist suspicions and reservations.
"Lutherans seek only two things wealth and wives . . .to them the gospel means the right to live as they please." Erasmus (Catholic)

    52. The Parsons Corner - Ancient Baptist History
Thanks for the historical record there Heinrich! John Clark Ridpath1840 1900 AD American educator and respected historian.
    http://parsonscorner.8m.com/anc.htm
The Parsons Corner Ancient Baptist History PART I Distinctions This particular page wasn't intended as part of the Parsons Corner website. It's actually a compilation of information and research I have put together for an upcoming book. The reason for this page being published is I have received countless emails from Catholics who are bound and determined to disprove the ancient history of the Baptist people. The reason they are sending these letters to the Parsons Corner and other similar sites is that with such claims being made, the Catholic church's claims of being the most ancient would be baseless. Well actually, their claims of being the original church are false. The majority of the questions I'm hoping to answer here come from a fellow by the name of Dan. Dan-o, I pray this paper will set your mind at ease! This paper is also an answer to certain liberal Baptists who have forgotten or are in ignorance to our history and are saying we are indeed protestants which is an utter falsehood. Now, with that said, lets find out about the Ancient Baptists by first describing the definition of a Baptist today with historical reference to the first century christians! I would have you to know though that the name "Baptist" was one given to us by those who opposed our stubborn adherence to Baptism the same as many other names we have been given including Christians. I'll try to cover these names later in this paper.

esearching The Romance One of the most rewarding and sometimes most frustrating aspects of writing an historical romance is the research. Where do you start? And more important, when do you stop? You have probably heard that you can never research too much. And that's true. The last thing you want as a writer is to have a reader point out an inconsistency or historical blunder. But remember, you won't use everything you find. What you do want to do is get an overall feeling for the time period. You'll do that by researching every aspect of life in the time period, from food to clothing to housing. Below is a list of books to start you on your way. Some are out of print, but may be available through your local library. If an ISBN# is available, I've included that in the listing also. Those entries marked with an ( ) are available for purchase through our bookstore in association with Amazon.com, an on-line book retailer. Many titles are available at a discounted price. To go to the Literary Liaisons Bookstore, click on the Bookstore Icon at the end of this page. I've also included books on the craft of writing, a must for every writer's library.
