Prinny's Paintings The Prince Regent's love of fine objects included paintings. He hung his collection of paintings on the walls of the opulent Carlton House . The "Shipbuilder and his Wife", purchased at auction in 1811 for 5,000 guineas, can be seen hanging on the wall of the Blue Velvet Room in the 1818 watercolor by Charles Wild, engraved by Daniel Havell for the hand colored acquatint plate book The History of the Royal Residences by William Henry Pyne . By 1816, the suite of state rooms at Carlton House was adorned with 136 paintings. 67 more paintings were in the Prince's bedroom suite. His other 250 paintings were in storage. In 1814, the Prince Regent acquired 86 Dutch and Flemish paintings from the heir of the banker, Sir Francis Baring . This brought the total Dutch and Flemish Masters works in his collection to over 200. The Prince Regent then sold 77 of his least favorite paintings, mostly still lifes, anonymously at Christie's on June 29, 1814. The Prince also commissioned and collected works by British portrait painters Thomas Gainsborough, Sir Joshua Reynolds, William Beechery (1753-1839), John Hoppner , and Sir Thomas Lawrence. Lawrence's energetic style and vivid colors particularly suited George the IV's style. The Scottish artist David Wilkie's work of 1818, "Penny Wedding," reminded the Prince Regent of his Dutch paintings. He became Wilkie's patron. George IV's passion for animals led him to patronize sporting artists Sawrey Gilpin

Est: £300-500,000 SOME OF the earliest recorded works by Sir Joshua Reynolds and John Constable will be among the highlights to be offered in Sotheby’s sale of Important British Paintings on Thursday June 12, 2003. The sale will provide a broad overview of British painting from the 17th to the 19th centuries, and will include a range of works by some of Britain’s most celebrated artists, including Sir Peter Lely, Sir Joshua Reynolds, John Constable, Johann Zoffany, Joseph Mallord William Turner and Paul Sandby. While Reynolds is widely celebrated for his portraits, his work as a caricaturist is little known. Painted in Rome in 1751, Portrait of Charles Turner, Sir William Lowther, Joseph Leeson and Monsieur Huet (est: £60,000-£80,000) is one of only eight recorded caricatures by the artist. Deftly capturing the pretensions and idiosyncracies of the characters it depicts (two British baronets, an Irish peer and their French tutor), the work provides a rare example of Reynolds’ skill in this field. Reynolds met the group during their travels through Italy on the fashionable Grand Tour, and his earthy representation of them forms a strong contrast with the grand portraits they would have commissioned from grand contemporary Italian artists like Pompeo Batoni, whose work is also represented in the sale. Other portraits include one of the few works painted by Angelica Kauffman (1741-1807) during her visit to Ireland in 1771. Estimated at £200,000-£300,000, Kauffmann’s conversation piece depicts Ireland’s leading 18th – century politician, Philip Tisdal, with his family.

Joshua Reynolds, 1723-1792 The son of a clergyman, he was born near Plymouth in 1723. He was sent to London to study art in 1740. He was apprenticed to Thomas Hudson but William Hogarth and Allan Ramsay had the most influence of his style. After a period in Rome (1749-1752), Reynolds returned to England where he established himself as one of country's leading portrait painters. Those painted by Reynolds included Josiah Wedgwood, Warren Hastings, Sir Joseph Banks and David Garrick. When the Royal Academy was established in 1768, Reynolds was elected its first president. The following year he was knighted. In 1784 Reynolds was appointed as painter to George III. However, five years later his sight began to deteriorate and he was forced to give up painting.
