3. SIR JOSHUA REYNOLDS
Reynolds, Sir Joshua (17231792), the most prominent figure in the English school of painting, was born at Plympton Earl, in Devonshire, on the 16th of July 1723.
http://33.1911encyclopedia.org/R/RE/REYNOLDS_SIR_JOSHUA.htm
SIR JOSHUA REYNOLDS
REYNOLDS, SIR JOSHUA Meanwhile the pleasant urbanity of manner which distinguished Reynolds throughout life had been winning for him friends. He had made the acquaintance of Lord Edgcumbe, and by him was introduced to Captain (afterwards Viscount) Keppel. Keppel was made aware of Reynoldss ardent desire to visit Italy; and, as he had just been appointed to the command oi the Mediterranean squadron, he gracefully invited the artist to accompany him in his own ship, the Centurion. The offer was gladly accepted. While Keppel was conducting his tedious negotiations with the dey of Algiers, relative to the piracy with which that potentate was charged, Reynolds resided at Port Mahon, the guest of the governor of Minorca, painting portraits of the principal inhabitants; and in December 1749 he sailed for Leghorn, and thence, with all eagerness, made his way to Rome. After a residence of more than two years in Rome, where he caught a severe cold which resulted in the deafness that clung to him for the rest of his life, Reynolds, in the spring of 1752, spent five months in visiting Parma, Florence, Venice and other important cities of Italy. Returning to England by way of Paris, Reynolds, after a brief stay in Devonshire, established himself as a portrait painter in St Martins Lane, London, whence he afterwards removed to Great Newport Street, and finally, im 1760, to Leicester Square, where he continued to paint till his death. The motive for this procedure may explain if it do not justify it. He was all his life intensely in earnest about his art, devoured by what he himself calls a perpetual desire to advance ; and he accounts for his own uncertainty partly from his want of training, and partly from his inordinate desire to possess every kind of excellence he saw in the works of others. Now if this mental ene,rgy led him into hazardous attempts to find a royal road to the painters ideal, it acted well upon his design in lending to it a certain intellectual solidity, which gives it an advantage over the slighter, though at times more exquisite, productions of the pencils of Gainsborough or Romney. The weight anti power of the art of Reynolds are best seen in those noble male portraits, Lord Heathfield, Johnson, Sterne, Goldsmith, Gibbon, Burke, Fox, Garrick, that are historical monuments as well as sympathetic works of art. In this category must be included his immortal Mrs Siddons as the Tragic Muse.

Sir Joshua Reynolds was an English painter in the Grand Manner, who was the foremost portraitist of his day. Reynolds was born in Plympton, Devonshire, on July 16, 1723, the son of a cleric. He learned portraiture from a painter in London and in 1749 sailed to the Mediterranean with Commodore Augustus Keppel. After three years traveling in Italy he returned to London, where he soon attracted notice by his portraits of prominent persons. He came to be the first English painter to achieve social recognition for his artistic achievements. In 1764 Reynolds founded the Literary Club, which included essayist and critic Samuel Johnson, actor David Garrick, statesman Edmund Burke, writer Oliver Goldsmith, writer James Boswell, and dramatist Richard Brinsley Sheridan. When the Royal Academy of Arts was instituted in 1768, Reynolds was elected president and was knighted. In 1769 he delivered the first of his annual Discourses (pub. 1778) to the students of the academy in which he set forth the idealistic, moralizing principles of academic art. In 1784 he succeeded Allan Ramsay as painter to the king; in the same year he exhibited his portrait of the English actor Sarah Siddons as the Tragic Muse (1784, Huntington Art Gallery, San Marino, California), probably his greatest portrait. Other well-known paintings are Nelly O'Brien (1760-62, Wallace Collection, London), Lady Sarah Bunbury (1765, Art Institute of Chicago), Heads of Angels (1787, Tate Gallery, London), and Age of Innocence (1788, Tate Gallery).

Sir Joshua Reynolds (1723-92)
Lady Elizabeth Delme and her Children,
Joshua Reynolds was the most successful portrait painter of his day in England as well as a distinguished member of London's intellectual society. Reynolds was born on July 16, 1723, in Plympton, Devon, England. His father, a clergyman, conducted a grammar school. Reynolds was one of his pupils, but he preferred sketching on the margins of his Latin exercises to studying. He also copied drawings at every chance. Apprenticed at age 17 to Thomas Hudson, a popular London portrait painter, Reynolds studied with him for three years. The next few years he divided between Plymouth and London. At Plymouth Reynolds met Lord Edgecumbe, who became a lifelong patron. Edgecumbe introduced him to Augustus Keppel, commander of the Mediterranean squadron of the British fleet. Keppel gave him passage to Rome, where for two years Reynolds studied the Italian masters. In the drafty galleries of Rome, Reynolds caught a cold that led to permanent deafness.
