In New York, Reed gained a reputation as one of the new and bright intellectuals of the Greenwich Village portion of New York. After going to New Jersey to witness a silk-workers' strike organized by Bill Haywood in 1913, he also became a supporter of the Industrial Workers of the World and their idea of "One Big Union." Subsequently, he organized an IWW march in New York. Officially becoming a journalist, Reed gained national attention for his reporting of the revolt led by Pancho Villa of Mexico in 1914. When World War I broke out, Reed denounced it as a "Traders' War." He was sent to Europe in 1914 and 1915 for The Metropolitan . After returning from Europe, he with numerous leftists such as Emma Goldman and Max Eastman to fight against the war. American journalist and poet-adventurer, whose life as a revolutionary writer ended in Russia, but made him the hero of a generation of radical intellectuals. Reed became a close friend of V.I. Lenin and was an eyewitness to the 1917 October revolution. He recorded this historical event in his best-known book TEN DAYS THAT SHOOK THE WORLD (1920). Reed is buried with other Bolshevik heroes beside the Kremlin wall. "I said, I think that a guy who is always interested in the condition of the world and changing it, either has no problems of his own or refuses to face them."
(Henry Miller about Reed in The Reds, dir. by Warren Beatty, 1981)

in Reed: Insurgent Mexico by Judith and John Hess from Jump Cut , no. 1, 1974, pp. 7-8
Jump Cut: A Review of Contemporary Media REED: INSURGENT MEXICO (Paul Leduc, 1972, Mexico) is an homage to John Reed, the American writer, journalist, and intransigent radical who covered the Mexican Revolution for four months in the winter of 1913-14. Before this film can be placed in its proper context we must introduce John Reed and the revolution he witnessed. John Reed (1887-1920) graduated from Harvard in 1910 and joined Lincoln Steffens, Eugene O'Neill, Max Eastman, Mabel Dodge, and many other American artists and intellectuals who lived the bohemian life in Greenwich Village. He began his career in journalism as an assistant editor of the American Magazine . In those days, the bohemian life had a large political component and Reed became involved in the I.W.W. and, in 1913, joined the group of young socialists who had started The Masses . In that year, too, Reed became involved in the long and bloody I.W.W.-led strike of silk workers in Paterson, New Jersey and was thrown in jail as a result. Once out, he directed a mass pageant for the benefit of the silk workers in Madison Square Garden; the pageant included more than 1000 of the strikers and speeches by Big Bill Haywood and Elizabeth Gurley Flynn.

BIOGRAFIA John Reed (1887-1920).

The situation in St. Petersburg was growing more and more tense. The People's Revolution had begun by overthrowing the corrupt Tsarist regime in March 1917, but the workers and the peasants felt the revolution had much farther to go. Tired of fighting a war that meant little to them, the soldiers also grew restless: "When the land belongs to the peasants, and the factories to the workers, and the power to the Soviets, then we'll know we have something to fight for, and we'll fight for it!" Lenin pressed the Bolsheviks to seize power. On the night of October 24, an organized mass of workers, soldiers, peasants, and sailors stormed the Winter Palace. On the following day, at the opening of the second Congress of Soviets, Trotsky announced the overthrow of the provisional government. Counterrevolutionary forces marched on the capital, but the Revolutionary Army triumphed. After all, "[t]his was their battle, for their world; the officers in command were elected by them. For the moment that incoherent multiple will was one will."
