'Middlemarch' (1872), which is perhaps her masterpiece, it seems to some critics decidedly too preponderant, giving to her novels too much the atmosphere of psychological text-books; and along with it goes much introduction of the actual facts of nineteenth century science. Her really primary instinct, however, is the moral one. The supremacy of moral law may fairly be called the general theme of all her works; to demonstrating it her scientific method is really in the main auxiliary; and in spite of her accuracy it makes of her more an idealist than a realist. With unswerving logic she traces the sequence of act and consequence, showing how apparently trifling words and deeds reveal the springs of character and how careless choices and seemingly insignificant self-indulgences may altogether determine the issues of life. The couplet from Aeschylus which she prefixed to one of the chapters of 'Felix Holt' might stand at the outset of all her work:
'Tis law as steadfast as the throne of Zeus
Our days are heritors of days gone by.

This is achieved by juxtaposing two literary genres from different traditions (Western detective fiction and Chinese court-case fiction) and exploring the issues that arise from reading them together. The point is not to try to conflate the two or subsume them in one, larger or universal genre; but rather, to help you come to a better understanding of each tradition through attention to the questions raised by differences between them. So, for example, we will try to think critically about the convention in Western detective fiction of concealing the identity of the criminal in light of the contrasting convention in courtcase fiction of describing the criminal's actions in full at the beginning; likewise, the heavy use of the marvelous in Chinese

Peebles, Frank b.1843 d.1882 Journal, 1861 September 1-1862 April 11; 1865 September 25-1868 June 30
Mooresville, Ala., 131 pp.
Background note: In 1812, John T. Peebles moved from Northampton County, North Carolina to Mooresville, which is up near the Tennessee border of Alabama in Limestone County. John's brother Robert joined him, and opened up a store in the thriving little town. Robert married Sophia C., who was born in New England and was probably in the south working as a school teacher when she met her husband. Sophia was an ardent Methodist, and taught bible class and Sabbath school. After the Civil War, which had wiped out all of the family's wealth except for their land, Sophia opened up a school in her house, and taught for eight hours a day, in addition to overseeing the various domestic "departments," as she referred to them. Robert and Sophia had four children, Henry Alden Peebles, who died of typhoid when he was seventeen, Robert, who also died young, a child who died in infancy, and Frank, who lived. Frank worked in his father's store, and briefly attended school in Lebanon, Tennessee probably Cumberland University before the Civil War interfered with his attempt to get an education. Frank was 18 when war broke out, and it is unknown if he took part in the fighting. After the war, Frank and his father formed a partnership and began again to run a store.
Scope and contents: This volume contains a journal kept by Frank Peebles between September 1861 and April 1862 (25 pp.) and a journal kept by his mother, Sophia, from September 25, 1865 through June 1868 (70 pp.). Sophia used the last thirty-six pages of the volume as a copybook.
