Ironic, I realize, but so is life.
Continental Philosophies
Continental philosophies are the schools of modern philosophical thought which developed on the continent of Europe, primarily France and Germany. Analytic philosophy, often associated with "deconstruction" and linear approaches, is associated with the United Kingdom and the United States. The two major approaches to philosophy diverged with the rise of phenomenology, founded in Germany by Edmund Husserl . Phenomenology attempts to describe the structures of consciousness in the constitution of reality. Continental schools of philosophy tend to move beyond the natural sciences. Modern continental thinkers moved into metaphysical studies and theories of experience. Phenomenology led to the existentialism of

A week before her 21st birthday, Alissa Zinovievna Rosenbaum left the Soviet Union, never to return. Officially, she had come only to visit family in Chicago but Rosenbaum had other plans. As a girl, she had watched the Bolshevik revolution reduce her middle-class family to poverty, and was convinced that communism would destroy Russia as well. After staying several months with her relatives, practicing her English, she headed to Hollywood to begin a new life under a new name: Ayn Rand. By a stroke of luck, Ayn (it rhymes with "mine") encountered legendary director Cecil B. DeMille on her second day in town. He gave her work as an extra in his film King of Kings , as well as advice on how to break into Hollywood screenwriting. Between work as a script reader and then file clerk at film studios, Rand struck up a romance with an actor named Frank O'Connor, whom she had met on DeMille's set. In 1929 they would marry, remaining together until his death in 1979. Rand's career as a professional author began in 1932 with the sale of a screenplay

84. The Intellectual Viewpoint: Philosophy: Objectivism
To know one s own desires, their meaning and their costs requires the highest human virtue rationality. Ayn Rand (1905 - 1982). What is Objectivism?

Updated: January 29, 2004 05:43 PM ET " To know one's own desires, their meaning and their costs requires the highest human virtue: rationality ." - Ayn Rand (1905 - 1982) What is Objectivism? The two main themes of the philosophy of Objectivism is the belief in individualism over collectivism, and selfishness over altruism.
Below is an outline of the philosophy:
- Reality exists independent of man's consciousness. It is an objective absolute.
- A is A (facts are facts - "man's consciousness is to pervceive reality, not to create or invent it." [1]
- Through reason man can know the facts of reality.
- There is a focus on free-will.
- Reason is man's only means of knowledge and his basic needs of survival. Man is a rational being.
- "Reason is man's only proper judge of values and his only proper guide to action." [2]
- "Man...is an end in himself, not a means to the ends of others; he must live for his own sake, neither sacrificing himself to others nor sacrificing others to himself." [3]

http://hem.passagen.se/margaretabjorndahl/aynrand.htm

    Ayn Rand (Alissa Rosenbaum)
Born in Russia, she studied at the University of Petrograd graduating in 1924. She immigrated to the United States two years later and became a screenwriter in Hollywood. During the late 1930s, she began developing her philosophy of objectivism, a worldview proclaiming support for each individual's talent and effort that according to her opinion finds his or her best expression solely within a pure capitalist framework. Rand argued in favor of her viewpoint in a number of novels, among them "The Fountainhead", published in 1943, and "Atlas Shrugged" released in 1957. She further elaborated her views in a number of non-fiction works as well as in two journals under her editorship: "The Objectivist" (1962-1971) and "The Ayn Rand Letter" (1971-1976).
