The Italian was Radcliffe's last novel. It is about a nobleman who falls in love with a woman whose identity is unknown to herself and the reader throughout her sufferings. She is oppressed by many people in whose hands she falls as she is snatched away from the nobleman Vivaldi to prevent their marriage. Like all of Radcliffe's heroines, her character is marked by an amazing fortitude despite the horrifying things to which she is frequently subjected. Vivaldi faces the powers of the Inquisition and Radcliffe gives the reader some idea of their dealings with offenders and their ways of making prisoners "confess." There are many turns of events which are delightful until another perilous event disappoints and grieves the reader. This is certainly what most reviewers call a page-turner. The sentiments are by no means modern. For a reader who is looking for modern unrestrained "romance," none of Radcliffe's novels is a good choice. Her stories are for true romantics.

    "Diana's Looking Glass,"-this fitting name
Our English Poet gave this lovely mere,
Set like a sapphire in an emerald frame,
Fair as Lake Nemi in whose waters clear
Are glass'd Italian hills, and skies serene,
Cypress and myrtle groves, and ilex green.
Close to this little Tarn lie valleys fair,
Imperial hills, on which the red-boled pine
Spreads out its fragrant branches on the air, And tassel'd larches mass'd in stately line, Bend o'er their shadows in the azure lake, Which mirrors lovingly both bush and brake. Beauty makes this her home:-not far away The Langdales lift their Pikes above the vale, First of the hills to catch the glimm'ring day, That newly waken'd, smiles o'er all the dale, When giant crag, and cliff, and upland lawn, Blush with the glowing tints of ruddy dawn. Charles Dent Bell, DIANA'S LOOKING GLASS. [from Diana's Looking Glass and Other Poems (1894)] Radcliffe, Ann Ward, 1764-1823: The Romance of the Forest (1791)

    Ann Radcliffe (1764 - 1823)
Born Ann Ward, she married William Radcliffe, in 1787. He was a law student, but ended up being the owner/editor of The English Chronicle She wrote only three novels, but they were highly acclaimed, extremely popular, and frequently reprinted. Sir Walter Scott wrote an essay for one of the editions, and Christina Rossetti was an admirer of Radcliffe's works. Radcliffe originated the gothic/horror romance genre ... although one romance author has pointed out that being shut up in a house with an unreasonable man was hardly an unfounded fear for her time. Her books were widely imitated, with varying degrees of success, but too many of the imitators used the props of crumbling castle, desperate villians, monstrous crimes, unspeakable horrosr, and supernatural happenings without bothering to create a plot to use them in. "Schedoni", her hero of The Italian , is one of the prototype Byronic heros. After The Italian , she gave up writing for publication, and it was widely rumored that she had been driven mad by the horrors of her own creations. In truth, her nearest approach to madness was her dislike of public notice and a passion for touring England. She and her husband made driving tours every other summer.

It is the origin and extent of the mysteries surrounding Ann Radcliffe which form the substance of Norton's resourceful and entertaining account . ... But in Norton's hands the circumstantial life can be made to yield a great deal. This is the case with the densely mapped Unitarian family background from which the young Ann Ward is seen to emerge ... If Norton is right, then
