His influential and much-imitated satiric masterpiece, Gargantua and Pantagruel (five books, 1532-52) is in the mock-quest tradition, with the emphasis decidedly on the 'mock' – the prize sought being at times the ideal toilet paper, at times the wisdom of the Holy Bottle. top of page SELECTED WORKS BY THIS AUTHOR Complete Works of Francois Rabelais by Francois Rabelais, Donald M. March 6, 2003 last night a friend asked me "how do i describe to people outside your scene what your scene is about, like someone from the new york times... marching bands, costumes, fire, rides, parades, these words don't tell them about the essence." i thought... and suggested the word "Rabelesque." Francois Rabelais (about 1483-1553) was a writer, most famous for his story about Gargantua and Pantegruel, which took nearly 20 years to write and is probably my favorite book of all time. it's pure, raw humor, that spares no one of any class, gender, or race the pleasure of being made fun of. its about a giant and his absurd life of excessiveness in education, libations, play, sleep, and relationships. i was looking through an old book i have called carnival of chaos, which is actually dedicated to arrow's (blackkat) little girl felix. it's about a two and a half month nomadic festival (of which arrow was a big part) that occured the summer of 95. originally it was a bunch of zines, but autonomedia released it as a collection in 96. this is some of what it says, "This is the story of our traveling outlaw party. our dropout circus. our carnival of chaos. the whole sordid tale of when we left new york in june, to when we all went our separate ways in minneapolis, two and a half months later.... it's the story of a bunch of clueless but slightly talented people, not at all knowing what they were doing, racing against time along the highways and the train lines, not always knowing why, but somehow managing to make it across the country with virtually no money. it's the story of a bunch of very different networking subcultures. the cultures underground - feeding off the waste of a dying parent culture - growing out of the cracks in the cement like weeds, slowly taking root under all the strip malls and the jails.... it's a story about breaking down barriers, putting up walls, building bridges and burning them down.... it's a story of wild ecstatic success and no hope crash and burn failure. whatever it is, it's a damn good story."

The first philosopher recorded at the University of St Andrews was the first Master of the College of St John, Laurence of Lindores. He was born probably in the 1370s, studied at the University of Paris from 1393, and died after 1438. He was the leading figure in the University of St Andrews in its early days (it was founded in 1413), Principal Regent of Pedagogy and Rector and Governor of the University. He was the Papal Inquisitor of Heretical Pravity in Scotland, whose main job was to root our heresy and who is now mainly remembered for burning heretics. His works were widely read in Continental universities over the succeeding one hundred years and were Copernicus' source of knowledge of medieval physics.

LIFETIME READING PLAN
Clifton Fadiman
Clifton Fadiman, who died in 1999 at the age of 95, was an editor, essayist, anthologist and broadcast personality. He was an editor and judge for the Book-of-the-Month Club for over 50 years. He wrote for the Encyclopedia Britannica as well as numerous magazines and compiled over two dozen anthologies on subjects ranging from mathematics to poetry to the pun. He became very well known appearing on the radio quiz show Information, Please! The Lifetime Reading Plan was first published in 1960; the second and third editions, with revisions and amplifications, appeared in 1978 and 1986. Finally, with the assistance of John S. Major, Clifton Fadiman prepared The New Lifetime Reading Plan (4th edition, 1998). The book is divided into 133 sections with each section devoted to an author and one or more of that author's books. The books are presented in chronological order and discussed in two or three pages each. This 4th edition addresses works of greater diversity than any of the earlier editions. The authors' write in the preface - "Because our country is more profoundly multicultural than ever, and also because it is to everyone's personal advantage to cast as wide a net as possible in harvesting the world's cultural riches, the works suggested...(here)... now include Lady Murasaki along with Jane Austen, Tanizaki cheek-by-jowl with Faulkner, Ssu-ma Ch'ien as well as Thucydides. We think these additions to the Plan will enhance both your pleasure and your sense of achievement as a reader."

An Incarnational Apologetic
to Satanism

By John Smulo
Introduction
  • A Brief History of Satanism. Traditional Satanism often refers to the worship of the Satan of the Christian Bible and the inversion of Christian practices. As Melton writes,
However, Melton qualifies this description by noting,
When seeking to provide even a brief history of Satanism, difficulties immediately arise. It appears that much of the historical material that we have in this regard is based on sensational accounts that make truth difficult to discern from fiction. Since most of the accounts of traditional Satanism are sensationalized or, as Melton stated, created for self-serving purposes by the Christian church, it appears that the type of Satanism that involves worship of the Christian Satan, ritual abuse, and a parody of especially Roman Catholicism, is much rarer during any time in history than has commonly been assumed. Furthermore, as we will note later, the belief that modern Satanists are involved in Satanic Ritual Abuse (SRA) as part of their belief system has been thoroughly discredited. Strictly speaking, what Drury and Tillett have referred to as secular Satanism has its historical origins in Anton LaVey and the founding of the Church of Satan in 1966. Those involved in LaVeyan Satanism, and most other forms of Satanism today do not believe in a literal Satan, nor do they worship anyone, other than, perhaps, themselves.
