THE MEN WHO MADE THE MOVIES

Saturday 13th December - Western Night October 2003 marked 100 Years of the Western, which TCM celebrated in a week-long season of memorable movies. Condensing the best of the week into one special evening, TCM’s Western Night line-up contains a specially commissioned TCM documentary, Wild Frontiers: The First 100 Years of the Western, and a double-header from maverick director, Sam Peckinpah who was renowned for stylishly reinventing the genre for a 60’s audience of Western fans.
Wild Frontiers: The First 100 Years of the Western (2003) - Documentary 21:00 This 60-minute, TCM-produced documentary looks at all aspects of the Western celebrating a centenary of the popular genre on film. The First 100 Years of The Western - Origins the first segment in the four part documentary examines the origins of the Western, going back to the earliest days of Hollywood before linear narrative and sound. The First 100 Years of The Western - Rediscovered looks at how the Western has been reinvented, as directors have created a whole series of sub-genres keeping the appeal alive for contemporary audiences. The First 100 Years of The Western - Stars examines the best of the screen cowboys, their famous scenes and sayings, those who have become favourites for generation after generation of movie-goers. Finally, in The First 100 Years of The Western - Directors the men behind the camera come under the spotlight as we examine the directors who stamped their indelible mark on the genre, creating visual extravaganzas and adding their own twist to the age-old stories and myths of the Wild West.

News Writing Environment Public Affairs Features Arts Virginia Assembly Business Archives Sherwood Anderson and William C. Stewart at Today By Mary E. Stewart I have no idea what my parents expected when they moved to New York for my father's job with Today magazine. My father, William C. (Bill) Stewart, was managing editor of Today from the first issue until April 1935. This was the reason for his initial contact with Sherwood Anderson. They became friends, and my parents visited the Andersons at Ripshin. Their friendship continued even after Bill left Today and there was no business reason to maintain contact. Bill was born in Brownwood, Texas, in 1907. He was interested in writing and drawing from an early age. He was on the staff of various publications at his high school, including serving as editor-in-chief of The Tattler, a semi-monthly magazine. Several of his drawings were included in the yearbook. He stayed in Brownwood to attend Howard Payne College and to work for the Brownwood Bulletin. He left Howard Payne after a disagreement with the faculty regarding his work on the college paper. The story I remember hearing was that he had written an article saying people should be allowed to smoke on campus, and the college did not approve of smoking or writing in favor of it. In 1928 he spent his vacation driving through the South and writing about his experiences. Shortly after this, he left the Bulletin to work for Scripps-Howard papers in Memphis and Birmingham. From the Birmingham Post, Bill went to Southbridge, Massachusetts.1
