Howard Pyle
1853–1911, American illustrator and writer, b. Wilmington, Del., studied at the Art Students League, New York City. His illustrations appeared regularly in Harper’s Weekly, and in many other American magazines. He both wrote and illustrated tales of chivalry and adventure for young people, among them The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood The Wonder Clock The Garden Behind the Moon (1895), and The Story of King Arthur and His Knights (1903). His illustrations are of marked individuality. Scenes from both medieval folklore and American history are rendered with engaging simplicity and penetrating realism. Pyle’s reconstructions of the past, of which he had an exhaustive knowledge, were uniquely believable. He also painted murals and taught painting. In 1894 he became director of illustration at Drexel Institute, Philadelphia. In 1900 he started the Howard Pyle School of Art next to his own studio in Wilmington, and classes were offered free to a limited number of students. A large collection of his pictures is preserved at the Wilmington Society of the Fine Arts. See biography by E. Nesbitt (1966); H. C. Pitz

    Howard Pyle's Arthurian Illustrations
These pictures of Morgan are from Howard Pyle's The story of King Arthur and his knights Howard Pyle (1853 - 1911) wrote and illustrated 4 Arthurian books, of which this is the first (he is also well known for another medieval subject, his Robin Hood). Pyle was the most important American illustrator of his generation, and teacher to a host of others, including N.C. Wyeth, whose work is featured above. The overall design and illustration of the books suggest something of Beardsley, but with a robust muscularity which is altogether his own. Some of the above text is taken from my notes to a 1999 exhibition of rare books from UBC's Special Collections. The Arkley Collection of Historical Children's Literature was a major source for books displayed at that time. Myles Falworth was but eight years of age at that time, and it was only afterwards, and when he grew old enough to know more of the ins and outs of the matter, that he could remember by bits and pieces the things that afterwards happened; how one evening a knight came clattering into the court-year upon a horse, red-nostrilled and smeared with the sweat and foam of a desperate rideSir John Dale, a dear friend of the blind Lord.
Men of Iron Books (First Lines)
In merry England in the time of old, when good King Henry the Second ruled the land, there lived within the green glades of Sherwood Forest, near Nottingham Town, a famous outlaw whose name was Robin Hood. No archer ever lived that could speed a gray goose shaft with such skill and cunning as his, nor were there ever such yeomen as the sevenscore merry men that roamed with him through the greenwood shades.
