    Card catalog description

Eugene Onegin (1833) is a comedy of manners, written in exquisitely crafted verse, about two young members of the Russian gentry, the eponymous hero and the girl Tatyana, who don't quite connect. It is also the greatest masterpiece of Russian literature - the source of the human archetypes and the attitudes that define and govern the towering fictional creations of nineteenth century Russia and one of the most celebrated poems of the world. Before Alexander Pushkin (1799-1837) wrote Eugene Onegin, his nation's literature was a parochial one; after he wrote it, due in no small part to its power and influence, the Russian tradition became one of the central traditions of Western civilization.

BNB name headings listed by frequency of occurrence
The frequency listing is intended as a means of tracing name headings according to how often they occur in BNB records created between 1996 and April 2003:
  • Headings are listed starting with those that occur most often. An item number has been assigned to each heading. The arrow indicates when a BNB heading is different to its NACO equivalent (shown in the alphabetical sequence) and is therefore a candidate for amendment. The number of records in which a heading occurs is shown in brackets. Headings that occur in the same number of records are arranged alphabetically and item numbers assigned accordingly. Headings are presented in sequences of one hundred.
  • The extent to which BNB headings are represented in users' catalogues will depend on record selection so that they may be less frequent than indicated here.

    Course Description
This course traces the development of Russian literature from the end of the eighteenth century, when Russian writers first began to conceptualize a great national literature, to the beginning of the twentieth century, when the golden era of Russian nineteenth-century prose seemed over. The course encompasses three literary movements Sentimentalism, Romanticism and Realism which, while shared with European literatures, reflected particularly Russian literary concerns. Although Russian literature is associated with the long novels of Tolstoy and Dostoevsky, it is of course much more varied. The readings reflect the development of small, large and mixed genres in nineteenth-century Russian literature essays, tales, Pushkin's novel in verse and Gogol's " poema " in prose, the novel, autobiography, and plays. We will be reading poems, a memoir and 3 novels or novellas by women writers.
