B C D ... Z by birthday from the calendar Credits and feedback Marcel (Valentin-Louis-George-Eugene) Proust (1871-1922) French novelist, best known for Á LA RECHERCHE DU TEMPS PERDU (Remembrance of Things Past), his autobiographical novel told mostly in a stream-of-consciousness style. The work collected pieces from Proust's childhood, observations of aristocratic life-style, gossip, recollections of the closed world, where the author never found his place. The key scene is when a madeleine cake (a small, rich cookie-like pastry) enables the narrator to experience the past completely as a simultaneous part of his present existence: "And suddenly the memory revealed itself: The taste was that of the little piece of madeleine which on Sunday mornings at Combray (because on those mornings I did not go out before mass), when I went to say good morning to her in her bedroom, my aunt Léonie used to give me, dipping it first in her own cup of tea or tisane." Jean Santeuil and CONTRE-SAINTE BEUVE, an attack on the biographical criticism of Sainte-Beuve, were discovered in the 1950s.

If a little dreaming is dangerous, the cure for it is not to dream less but to dream more, to dream all the time. A powerful idea communicates some of its strength to him who challenges it. The mistakes made by doctors are innumerable. They err habitually on the side of optimism as to treatment, of pessimism as to the outcome. page: Marcel Proust is the author of A la recherche du temps perdu , one of the major achievements of Modernism and a great gay novel. Proust was born in 1871. His Jewish mother was highly educated; his father was a distinguished professor of hygiene. Proust had a comfortable and protected bourgeois childhoodall the more cosseted after the age of nine when he had the first in a lifelong sequence of debilitating asthma attacks. Three years later, he began to masturbate, usually locking himself away in the lavatory at the top of his parents' house. Sponsor Message.
After taking degrees in law (1893) and philosophy (1895) at the Sorbonne, he embarked on a relatively leisurely existence consisting of social visits, neurotic illnesses, and the writing of belles lettres. In 1895, he also started trying to write a massive autobiographical novel

Marcel Proust

Marcel Proust
Author Marcel Proust was to French literature what Henri Matisse, Claude Monet and Pierre Auguste Renoir were to French art a major talent whose work is recognized for its individual greatness and for forming a significant part of an entire movement. Proust was born to well-to-do parents living in Paris at the same time the French impressionist painters were busy employing their techniques. Proust first demonstrated literary talent in high school. And, like the French impressionist painters, Proust was greatly influenced by the characters, artists, musicians and authors he met while hanging out in the salons and cafes all over Paris. He published his first book in 1896 "Les Plaisirs et les Jours." A collection of essays and short stories, the book flopped. He had started to write a novel in 1895 only to abandon it later, finding more success translating the works of foreign writers and contributing articles of literary criticism to French newspapers and other periodicals. In 1909, Proust used one of his essays as the basis for a new novel one that he would continue to work on for the rest of his life. The work, which he later named "A la recherche du temps perdu" (Remembrance of things past), was published in a series of parts in 1913, 1919, 1920, 1921, 1922 and collectively form his most famous writings. Today, they are recognized as major literary works of French expression.
