Oh, there are voices of the past link of a broken chain,
Wings that can bear me back to times which cannot come again,
Yet God forbid that I should lose the echoes that remain.
Adelaide Ann Proctor (1825-1864) The photo shows William Henry Endean tending the grave of his grandmother, Betsy, and father, John Colmore Endean. The following is written by Fred Endean (1905-2000) It was much more difficult for William Henry. He was a stonemason, not a miner. He did not have the experience which would enable him to work in the pits. But he had a wife and two young children to keep and no chance anywhere of work at his own trade. He went to work in the pit with his father and brothers and they stuck it out together.
For two years he worked with the rest of his family and then fate dealt him another blow. He was involved in an explosion whilst at work and lost his left eye. In those days compensation for loss of life or limb due to an accident was rare and difficult to obtain. Without the financial resources needed to take legal action against the owners and prove an employer's negligence, the result was always against the workman. William Henry was unlucky, he didn't get any compensation and had to leave his colliery house provided by the employers but only for men who could do the work. He wasn't acceptable.
The outlook for him must have been daunting at this stage. He had to find other accommodation for his family and some means of maintaining them. Unable to continue as a miner and no possibility of work at his trade of a stonemason, in desperation he took a job as Parish Clerk and Sexton at St Nicholas Church, Cramlington. It provided in a small way, to eke out the help, provided by his family in his straitened circumstances but strangely enough led to the turning point in his fortunes. In any event he carried on work as Parish Clerk and Sexton for 15 years and for this he had a very good reason.

Kekuatan Yang Terabaikan
