The chevalier des Grieux, the hero, is probably the most perfect example of the carrying out of the sentiment " All for love and the world well lost " that exists_in fiction, at least where the circumstances are those of ordinary and probable life. Tiberge, his friend, is hardly inferior in the difficult part of mentor and reasonable man. The Life and Entertaining Adventures of Mr. Cleveland, Natural Son of Oliver Cromwell
Vikki?s Note: In 1996, I received copies of correspondence from Cleveland Family Chronicles Research Society (CFCRS) members John Arnett, Grace Green, and the late June Rayfield Welch concerning the possible connection between Oliver Cromwell and the Cleveland line, and the infamous book supposedly written by Cromwell's "natural son." Their genealogical "triumvirate" may be contributing as much to our family research efforts as Horace and Edmund's worthy genealogical volumes of 1899. Many thanks to them for their continuing support of and contributions to CFCRS.] [From a letter to Grace Green, dated 2 Jan 1996] Dear Grace, I've read with interest your comments in the CFCRS and have been intending to write you anyway to inquire more about what you knew regarding the Cleveland-Cromwell connection.... This past year I read Antonia Fraser's Cromwell and found the study of his life most interesting. Like most of the Cleveland descendants, I had hoped that the connection would eventually turn out to be correct...and it may yet be. On a trip to Washington a year or so ago, I copied some Coffey material and noted in the Coffey family writings a similar interest in trying to make a connection. A Rice Coffey who was the grandson of John Cleveland (m. Elizabeth Coffey) was quite certain that his grandfather was descended from English nobility, and several subsequent family members apparently claimed a Lady Axminster to have been an ancestor.

SYNOPSIS OF THE PREVOST NOVEL
By
John Arnett [Vikki's Note: Once again I thank John for his contributions in this Cromwell matter. If you are something of a romantic as I am, with a vivid imagination, it will be easy for you to get caught up in this narrative as if it is truly a historical account of one of our ancestors. So we must keep in mind that the Prevost book is a work of fiction, albeit historical fiction. Neverthless, as John pointed out to us previously, scrutiny of this book is important to Cleveland researchers simply because it had such a profound influence on our forebears and their philosophies.] The Life and Entertaining Adventures of Mr. Cromwell, Natural Son of Oliver Cromwell, Written by Himself. Giving a particular Account of his Unhappiness in Love, Marriage, Friendship, etc., and his great Sufferings in Europe and America. Intermixed with Reflections, describing the heart of Man in all its Variety of Passions and Disguises; also some curious Particulars of Oliver's History and Amours, never before made publick. London: Printed for T. Astley, at the Rose in St. Paul's Church-Yard, 1735. [This book, written by Abbe (Antoine) Prevost (1697-1763), contains some 380,000 wordsabout the size of Henry Fielding's

Spiritwalk Library Project Gutenberg http://www.gutenberg.net Project Gutenberg is the Internet's oldest producer of FREE electronic books (eBooks or eTexts). It intends to put as many books on-line as possible and to gather these on line works into one central location. It is a terrific service of the University of Illinois.
Project Gutenberg is the brainchild of Michael Hart, who in 1971 decided that it would be a really good idea if lots of famous and important texts were freely available to everyone in the world. Since then, he has been joined by hundreds of volunteers who share his vision. Now, more than thirty years later, Project Gutenberg has the following figures (as of November 8th 2002): 203 New eBooks released during October 2002, 1975 New eBooks produced in 2002 (they were 1240 in 2001) for a total of 6267 Total Project Gutenberg eBooks. 119 eBooks have been posted so far by Project Gutenberg of Australia
