An interview with
Francis Davis
By Beppe Colli
March 16, 2004

I believe that the first piece by Francis Davis that I read was a profile of Roscoe Mitchell that appeared on Musician magazine about twenty years ago. I greatly appreciated that article, but finding more material by Davis proved to be not so easy, the majority of the pieces he wrote appearing in U.S. newspapers (New York Times, Philadelphia Inquirer) and magazines (The Atlantic Monthly, The New Yorker, Stereo Review, The Village Voice) that were for me quite difficult to get. So I was really glad when his first collection was released. Titled In The Moment (1986), it was followed by Outcats (1990) and Bebop And Nothingness (1996).
There are many reasons why Francis Davis is held in high esteem by many. He obviously knows his stuff - jazz, sure, but also rock and pop; and let's not forget theater, cinema and television, in those instances when music plays an important part. He knows how to explain facts pertaining to musical language in a way that's deep but clear, so as not to exclude the uninitiated reader. He knows how to place musical artifacts in the context of wider cultural frameworks, but never at the expense of the music - i.e., the "cultural signifier" never becomes the smokescreen behind which music disappears. His writing stile is quite cultured, while at the same time making for smooth reading.

1960 - California Jewish Press (Calif. USA) - "Hollywood Column" by Barney Glazier.
"Connie Francis sings Jewish Favorites" (MGM). This Italian gal from Bloomfield, NJ, sings "My Yiddishe Momme", "Yossel, Yossel" and others with an impeccable Yiddism." 1961 - Limelight (Hollywood, Calif. USA) - "Limelight's Platter Previews" by Len Simpson.
"Never On Sunday" Connie Francis (MGM) - Connie gives forth with her best (most of them are) album to date in a fine collection of film tunes. Album title number is augmented with such as "High Noon", "Young At Heart", "Around the World", "April Love", "Three Coins in the Fountain", "Tammy" "Picnic" and all the rest. This well could be Connie's biggest seller. " 1963 - Richard Attenborough, "Record Mail", London (UK)
"Follow the Boys", the album - "Leroy Holmes has arranged this set, and he also supplies the orchestral backing. He has created a wonderful atmosphere for Connie to work in - the whole album suggests all the exoticism of the sun-drenched Riviera, which was where the film was shot.".

Study for Portrait II (after the Life Mask of William Blake)
Francis Bacon and the Death of Art
By Joan Altabe British painter Francis Bacon has been dead for ten years Bacon painted people as though they were hit with force-ten storms and knifing rains. Their anxiety chokes them purple. Their edges appear in fitful blurs. Color is so loud that it comes across like hostility. Even the pigment looks racked. You feel assaulted by an unknown dread when you see it. You try to make sense of it. Bacon said not to try: Reclining Man with Sculpture Georges Seurat showed the same urge in his painting, La Grande Jatte . The sublime arrangement of tiny dots, made with machinelike precision, is really Seurat describing the joylessness of middle-class life. Empty faces and starched, separate bodies are his icons of alienation in modern life. The dot matrix magnifies the anonymity of that life. Study After Velazquez's Portrait of Pope Innocent X Like Seurat, Bacon conveyed the modern experience of isolation. His

I got pretty sick after boating on the Saint Francis in Missouri. Lots of pig farms around. I ran a 103 degree temp for 4 days and started halucinating before it finally broke. Pretty sure it was lepto or gardia related. Started feeling pretty ill within hours of my swim on the saint. Add Message Show Frames Add Message Show Frames ... Advertise With Us

Francis Yip wins my vote for being the most graceful lady in Hong Kong. She's refined, well-mannered and has a Western air about her that makes her seem charming and different from the rest of Hong Kong. Her English is precise, and her words are articulate and insightful. Some artists talk too much during concerts, but I always look forward to listening to Francis Yip speak in between songs. Even if I'm not paying attention to what she's saying, it's still a joy to listen to the melodious tones of her voice, the emphasis and the air of conviction behind her stories. Francis Yip is a fighter. She not only sings about heroes, but she's a hero herself. Recently Francis Yip overcame breast cancer, and has come back stronger, more graceful, and more beautiful than ever.

FOREWORD
n December 1993, U.S. Secretary of Energy Hazel R. O'Leary announced her Openness Initiative. As part of this initiative, the Department of Energy undertook an effort to identify and catalog historical documents on radiation experiments that had used human subjects. The Office of Human Radiation Experiments coordinated the Department's search for records about these experiments. An enormous volume of historical records has been located. Many of these records were disorganized; often poorly cataloged, if at all; and scattered across the country in holding areas, archives, and records centers.

Pericles, Prince of Tired Plots
I belong to a Shakespeare reading group; we get together about once a month and read one of Shakespeare's plays aloud. We're now almost done with our tour through the canon. All that remains is Hamlet, which we're going to do up right we'll be going out of town for our reading, and taking a whole weekend for our outing. We've had some surprises on the way. Many plays with not very good reputations turned out to be extremely enjoyable to read (Titus Andronicus and the Henry VI trilogy come to mind), for instance. Of course, a lot of plays with bad reputations just turned out to be, well...bad. Obviously, we deliberately saved Hamlet for last, but there were some plays lurking towards the end of our Shakespeare tour that were mostly there because we were never all that enthused about reading them in the first place. Which is my way of introducing the play we read this afternoon, our penultimate pit stop Pericles. Before today, I would have said that the lamest Shakespeare play was A Winter's Tale (in a close race with Love's Labors Lost). But now I am convinced the nadir is Pericles. Let me provide a condensed version of the play so you can judge for yourself.
