Prescott, William Hickling Prescott, William Hickling, , American historian, b. Salem, Mass. He entered his father's law office, but was compelled by a serious eye injury to abandon law. He received medical attention on a European trip and finally, resolving to devote himself to historical writing, began a thorough preparation for the task. His first important historical work, The History of the Reign of Ferdinand and Isabella (1837), achieved an immediate success. He wrote critical and historical essays while engaged in writing a History of the Conquest of Mexico The Conquest of Peru (1847), his next major effort, enjoyed a success comparable to his earlier efforts, and though his sight was practically gone he started a monumental work, The History of Philip II (unfinished; Vol. I and II, 1855; Vol. III, 1858). Though Prescott's work is now outdated because of subsequent research, it lives as literature. He is considered to be one of the greatest of American historians. His strength lay not in philosophical insight or deep analysis but in the excellent style and presentation of material that made his facts and his narrative alive, colorful, and vivid. His Biographical and Critical Miscellanies appeared in 1859. His works were edited by W. H. Munro (22 vol., 1904, repr. 1968). His correspondence was edited by Roger Wolcott (1925) and his literary memoranda by C. Harvey Gardiner (1961). A volume of

    My dear Sir
I have to thank you for your kind letter of June 3 , as well as for another received some months since and which I fear I have left unanswered. In reply to your inquiries about our health, I am happy to say that I am well in all respects except a little lameness from rheumatism which I have vainly attempted to cure by the vapor-baths of the grotto of Monsumano near this city. I do not mind the annoyance of rheumatism except as it disables m[e] for mountaineering, which is much the greatest material pleasure I have left; but the reluctance of the government to allow me to leave my post, even for a month's recreation in the Italian Alps, is so strong, that I would probably feel obliged to renounce this enjoyment, if I were even as good a climber as Tyndall . Mrs Marsh had a winter of much suffering, but has been somewhat relieved by hot baths. I applied for leave of absence for a sufficient time to enable her to consult an eminent physician at Paris. This was

William Hickling Prescott, considered one of the great American historians, was a specialist on the Spanish conquest of the New World. His recording of the voyages was vivid and scientific, which made him a popular author. He published A History of the Conquest of Mexico in 1843, and A History of the Conquest of Peru four years later. He suffered sight problems throughout his life; however, he never stopped writing. His death occurred when he was in the midst of completing The History of Philip II. Literature: The History of the Conquest of Mexico (1843). Search: Other interesting links:

Janie Humphries Named Director of Educational and Advisory Services
After a national search we are pleased to announce that Janie Humphries has been named Director of Educational and Advisory Services. Janie joined APH as the first "official" APH Field Services Representative in August of 2000 after a successful career in Arkansas as a vision teacher, regional preschool consultant, and acting director of Educational Services for the Visually Impaired (Arkansas Department of Education/School for the Blind). During her tenure at APH, Janie has traveled the country sharing information about the company's products and services with a considerable amount of her time focused on the development of three new federal initiatives. One of those initiatives has allowed Janie to contract with experts to incorporate their knowledge of APH products into presentations. Topics presented around the country, in partnership with our Ex Officio Trustees, have ranged from teaching math skills to developing a better understanding of cortical visual impairments. A second initiative has allowed Janie to work with APH staff to create special product catalogs and videos. The third initiative includes the University Product Loan System that has proven to be a very successful strategy for university instructors to share APH products. In her new role, Janie will continue to meet federal initiative goals as well as provide leadership to the Federal Quota Census process and the growing field services responsibilities.
