Salem Massachusetts, 1890 SALEM [The State Normal School, Salem] During this year (August 6,1629), the first complete church organization ever made in this country was effected here; and the Rev. Francis Higginson was appointed pastor. John Massey was the first child born in the place. His birth occurred in 1629, and his death in 1709. In 1703 the old church Bible was presented to him as "the first town-born child." His cradle is still preserved. In 1636 the quarter court was held in this town, which then embraced what is now Manchester, Beverly, Danvers, Peabody, Middleton, with parts of Lynn, Topsfield, and Wenham. In 1661 eighteen Quakers were publicly punished here; and in 1692 occurred the remarkable delusion in respect to witchcraft, for which many persons in this and in the neighboring towns were tried, and as many as nineteen executed. The Curwin house, in which some of them were examined, is still standing on Essex Street. (See Danvers.) Salem exhibited a noble patriotism during the Revolution; and when, after the closing of the port of Boston, Gen. Thomas Gage removed to this town, the citizens presented him an address (June 11, 1770), in which they magnanimously said : "By shutting up the port of Boston, some imagine that the course of trade might be turned hither, and to our benefit; but Nature, in the formation of our harbor, forbids our becoming rivals in commerce to that convenient mart. And, were it otherwise, we must be dead to every idea of justice, lost to all feelings of humanity, could we indulge one thought to seize on wealth, and raise our fortunes on the ruins of our suffering neighbors."

Jack's Treasure
Like all good pirates, I am sure he had his own private store of goods hidden away on an island somewhere (and no, not just the rum). The treasure we know he had was what he took away at the end which was a crown and some odds and ends pictured above. Of course, we don't know exactly if he brought it onto the pearl - he certainly didn't have it on him at the hanging, but Will might have given it to him later.
The Aztec Gold
As the story goes, Cortes was sent the 882 pieces of gold to stop the blood spent in his conquest of Mexico. In case you think of him as nothing but a alculating murderer here is some further info on the man's early history.
Cortes was in fact hardly the coldblooded, cruel Spaniard of some tales, he simply saw opportunities and took them. He was always of a somewhat rebellious nature, even with his allies. Velasquez, the governor of the region he was stationed in became his patron, and even so, Cortes, ³Connected himself with a disaffected party tolerably numerous in the island. They were in the habit of meeting at his house and brooding over their causes of discontent² (Prescott BII Chap2). (The affair ended when Cortes actually embarked on an embassy to secretly bring their grievances before Velasquez¹s superior).

Click on image to see details This large window in the reading room of the Hackley Public Library echoes the semicircular arches of the entrance and upper window arcade of the building in which it is located. The window is divided into three levels with four panels at each level. The top and bottom panels are filled with intricate floral motifs. The panels of the middle level hold portraits of four writers who were popular in the late 1800s (left to right): England's William Shakespeare (1564-1616), Germany's Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832), America's Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (1807-1882) and American historian William Hickling Prescott (1796-1859). Smaller decorative windows flank the larger window. The Hackley Public Library was registered in the Michigan Stained Glass Census by Robert A. Youngman of Muskegon (MSGC 94.0149). Photos by Jon G. Prescott, William Hickling Prescott, William Hickling, , American historian, b. Salem, Mass. He entered his father's law office, but was compelled by a serious eye injury to abandon law. He received medical attention on a European trip and finally, resolving to devote himself to historical writing, began a thorough preparation for the task. His first important historical work, The History of the Reign of Ferdinand and Isabella (1837), achieved an immediate success. He wrote critical and historical essays while engaged in writing a History of the Conquest of Mexico The Conquest of Peru (1847), his next major effort, enjoyed a success comparable to his earlier efforts, and though his sight was practically gone he started a monumental work, The History of Philip II (unfinished; Vol. I and II, 1855; Vol. III, 1858). Though Prescott's work is now outdated because of subsequent research, it lives as literature. He is considered to be one of the greatest of American historians. His strength lay not in philosophical insight or deep analysis but in the excellent style and presentation of material that made his facts and his narrative alive, colorful, and vivid. His Biographical and Critical Miscellanies appeared in 1859. His works were edited by W. H. Munro (22 vol., 1904, repr. 1968). His correspondence was edited by Roger Wolcott (1925) and his literary memoranda by C. Harvey Gardiner (1961). A volume of
