  • Pradier, James James Pradier , also known as Jean-Jacques Pradier (Geneva 1790 - June 4, 1852) was a Swiss-born French sculptor best known for his work in the neoclassical style. In 1807 Pradier left Geneva to work in Paris with his elder brother, an engraver. He won a Prix de Rome that enabled him to study in Rome from 1814 to 1818. He studied under Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres in Paris. In 1827 he became a member of the Académie des beaux-arts and a professor at the Ecole des beaux-arts. Unlike many of his contemporaries, Pradier oversaw the finish of his sculptures himself. He was a friend of the Romantic poets Alfred de Musset, Victor Hugo and Théophile Gautier, and his atelier was a center, presided over by his beautiful mistress, Julitte Drouet, who married Hugo in 1833.

ENVISIONING in South Carolina
South Carolina AER members enjoyed beautiful weather, scrumptuous seafood, delightful downtown Charleston, and a double dose of ENVISION when they convened in Mt. Pleasant, SC on January 22 and 23 for their annual conference. Field Services Representative Sandi Baker joined 65 conference attendees to engage them in 2 sessions of hands-on activities as they experienced ENVISION, APH's training curriculum for teaching students to use near and distance optical devices. During this hands-on training, participants heard stories about Emmy the Emu and her brothers in the Australian outback, and were led through a variety of fun activities that teachers will use with their students as they teach them to use their devices.
APH Workshop for State Assessment Personnel
The Accessible Tests Department hosted a workshop, Making Tests Accessible for Students with Visual Impairments , at APH, January 14-15. The historic event, similar to one offered for test publishers in the fall, attracted 26 participants from 13 states. Those attending the training included state assessment personnel as well as representatives from the United States Department of Defense and two test publishing companies. The workshop provided information regarding test development and adaptation to ensure accessibility for students with visual impairments and to address other critical issues involved in providing accessible tests.

CHAPTER VI
THE GENERAL LITERARY DEVELOPMENT OF THE UNITED STATES
I. The Historians. II. Orators and Statesmen. III. The Writers of Pennsylvania and New York. IV. Novelists and Humorists. V. Poetry South and North. VI. Scholars and Essayists. THE period in our literary history which produced our most distinguished writers in prose and verse has not yet been fully described. Contemporary with these the popular classics of our literature there were many authors of lesser rank whose names belong in the record of our literary development. Some of these may be designated as the minor essayists, novelists, and poets of their generation, while some are our foremost representatives in other fields of literary effort as yet not touched upon.
I. THE HISTORIANS
First in this enumeration are the historical writers who constitute an important group among the authors of the century. The most brilliant of the number were Prescott, Motley, and Parkman. These three men were thoroughly representative of the traditional New England aristocracy of culture. They were all residents of Boston and graduates of Harvard College. A peculiar coincidence is found in the fact that both Prescott and Parkman suffered from the affliction of partial blindness, and that it was only in spite of extraordinary difficulty, by the exercise of consummate patience, that each was successful in his achievement.
W.H. Prescott
