Our Local Church History Over all, thirty pastors have served the Presbyterian Church. The most recent, Rev. Darin Bentzinger, makes thirty one. Two former pastors, Reverend Tinkham and Reverend Nelson, came from Ireland. The others came from all over the country. Youth Groups This church has a rich history of active youth ministry and activity. Each summer, youths are able to attend summer camp at Westminster Woods, South of Lexington, NE. In the past two years, we have had youth take part in the Westminster Woods Mission trip (last year they went to Southern Colorado) and in the Sports Camp (directed by Rev. Bentzinger). During the school months, the youth from the Presbyterian and United Methodist Churches combine to form the United Youth Fellowship. Together they meet twice a month for study and fun. Each year they try to do at least one fund raiser, a community service activity, and either a mission or ski trip. This group numbers approximately 20-25 youth. They also handle the Easter Sunrise Service each year. This year (1998) we will be sending three youth to the Presbyterian Youth Triennium, an event sponsored by the Presbyterian Church (USA) where 6,000+ Presbyterian youth meet at Purdue University for a week of learning and fun.

The First Presbyterian Church
By Samuel Kendrick The beginning of the Presbyterian Church of Rudyard may be traced to a visit paid to the little town by the Rev. Forbes in September, 1894. The service was held in Mr. Davidson's land office which is now Mr. Trimble's Jewelry store and a Sunday school was organized. A short time before this, however, we had started a Sunday school in our home a mile east from Rudyard, our four children and the three Huntley children attending.
The second Sunday, Mr. and Mrs. Field came with a generous offer, "Why not come," they said, "and hold the school in the room over our store?" From that time onwards the school was held in the upper part of the old store and not only the school but religious services as well.
The older folk came from the district round about and seated upon empty shingle-nail barrels, would listen to the preaching of the.Gospel.
The first school house was built in the fall of 1894 and we held services here. Subsequently this building was purchased by the society.

In 1924, the first church was dedicated at the corner of Liberty and Second St. As Bethlehem grew, a new sanctuary was built next to the old one. The sanctuary was built entirely of Mankato stone and an artist, Cyrus M. Running, was hired to paint a total of 58 biblical characters on the inner walls. The old church burned down in April of 1978, but the congregation rallied and built a new "Heritage" room, Youth room, and offices for Lutheran Social Services (which rents part of the facility) in its place. "For where two or three are gathered in my name, I am there among you." Matthew 18:20 The women of Second Presbyterian Church have a long and rich history of mission outreach, community involvement and regular Bible study. At various times called the Ladies' Aid Society, the Ladies' Benevolent Society and the Women's Auxiliary, this organization is now known as the Presbyterian Women and it is as vital and active a ministry today as ever! The Presbyterian Women's organization is dedicated to building an inclusive caring community for all women of Second Church. The goals of the Presbyterian Women are: To involve women in the activities, work and worship of the congregation; To provide education in the Christian faith and to provide a place for discussion of that faith; To challenge women to identify their talents and to help them realize the joy of using these gifts in God's service; To help overcome loneliness, especially among those women who are unable to participate in church activities; and

HISTORY OF SAND BEACH
The Churches The Presbyterian Church

by A. W. Chamberlain In giving to the public a sketch of the history of the Presbyterian Church and society in Sand Beach, a narrative touching on principal facts is all that space will permit. Coming onto the shore of Lake Huron with his business in the summer of 1879, it was observed by the writer as the most unlikely occurrence that Presbyterianism should undertake to secure a foothold in Sand Beach. However, "Man proposes but God disposes." In the summer of 1880 there came into my place of business a stranger who introduced himself as the Presbyterian Synodical missionary of the state of Michigan. He had come onto this Huron shore at the request of Ambrose Wight, D.D. of Bay City and other ministers of the Saginaw Presbytery in order to ascertain if the time had not come to drive a Presbyterian stake or tree as a nucleus around which to begin gathering the rapidly incoming population. From his vest pocket he pulled a slip of paper having the names of seven persons on whom he purposed calling, with a view to organizing a society and of establishing preaching service.

CHAPTER VI ERECTION OF SECOND CHURCH The Church and Sunday school membership continued to increase steadily during the ensuing decade up to the time of the erection of a new church in 1886. The Rev. William McNab was moderator of the session in August, 1877. He was also the minister of the church at Orwell Aug. 26, 1877 to Aug. 26, 1879. In his first year, Miss Nannie Maria Miller, Mrs. Abagail (Rogers) Taylor, native of Warren township, mother of the late Phil H. Taylor of Rome, and Mr. Joseph Cook were received into membership, the first two being baptized at the time, and Mr. and Mrs. J. R. Coolbaugh brought letters back from the Waverly Presbyterian Church. Mrs. Julia Forbes came by letter from the LeRaysville Congregational church. Mr. Robert Kier and his wife Ann were dismissed to the Athens Presbyterian Church. Mr. McNab baptized Aug. 24, 1879 Margaret Ann, infant daughter of Adam and Agnes Kier, now Mrs. Luther Phillips of North Orwell.

One of the first pioneers of the Presbyterian faith in Texas was the Reverend W.C. Blair who was sent in 1838 by the Synod of Mississippi as a teacher and foreign missionary to the frontier. He and his family built a house and school in Victoria in 1839. In that house the First Presbyterian Church of Victoria was organized on October 2, 1841, by eight charter members: James Norman Smith (ruling elder), Mrs. Smith, John Gray, Mary Keith, F. Leiter, Mrs. Chenault, and Susan M. Blair.
The first building was constructed on "Presbyterian Church Square," the Ecclesiastical Square on the east of Constitutional Square (now DeLeon Plaza), by petition of the church trustees to the city officials who granted the request of the church as long as they would build a "descent house" on it within thirty months. This church was a frame building 39' by 52' without a roof or floor. It remained that way until the Reverend Daniel Baker came and gave a series of evangelical sermons and the Reverend was able to raise more funds. Then the building was finished.
The growth of the church was assisted when the Texas Legislature passed an act authorizing the trustees of the church to sell all or part of the church square as long as the proceeds were applied to building a church and improving the church grounds. The lots formed by this subdivision were sold, and the proceeds were used to build the church and manse at Forrest and Liberty. The white frame sanctuary built there was occupied October 23, 1873. It is interesting to note that no pastor served the congregation continuously until April 5, 1874 when an official call was accepted. The building was declared free of debt and dedicated to worship on October 8, 1876. The list of officers of the church shows only elders serving until 1874. At that time, the church elected and ordained men to serve as deacons to the congregation. These officers and the minister led the work and worship of the congregation.

by Melody S. Jenkins The Moultrie Presbyterian Church was formally organized on October 3, 1892 by the following charter members: John Millsap, Mary E. Millsap, Mollie E. Millsap, William B. McPhaul, Nannie McPhaul, James A. McKay, William Coachman Vereen, Mary McNeill Vereen, Major Neill McKay McNeill, Jane J. McNeill, Ellen McNeill, Carrie McNeill, Sallie Heath, Burgess A. Rowland, A. N. McDonald, and Walter L. Wilson. These sixteen Presbyterians, most of whom migrated from South Carolina, gathered together with the Reverend T. J. Allison, an evangelist from the Savannah Presbytery who acted as moderator. W. C. Vereen and William B. McPhaul were elected as Ruling Elders. John A. Milsap and James McKay were elected as Deacons. The first church building, located on West Central Avenue, was dedicated on June 11, 1893. To accommodate the remarkable growth of the congregation, a second building was built on the corner of First Street and Third Avenue SE. It was dedicated in 1898. The third church building, which is still in use today, is located at 501 1st Street SE and was dedicated on October 6, 1912. Four additions have been made to this building: Ellen Vereen Hall (1931), Stegall Memorial Building (1956), Dr. M. A. MacDonald Nursery (1965) and the Fellowship Hall (1985). From its inception, the Moultrie Presbyterian Church has been very active in mission work. Mission churches were organized in Doerun (1915), Princeville (1917) and the 2nd Presbyterian Church on North Main Street (1917). In 1945, the Sylvester Drive Chapel was established. Sunday school was held each Sunday afternoon and an outdoor service was held each Sunday evening during the summer months. Other local mission programs included youth groups, Boy Scout and Girl Scout troops.

The early history of the Paris Presbyterian Church is closely woven to that of Pleasant Hill Presbyterian Church.
In 1842, Rev. W. P. Cochran was commissioned by the Palmyra Presbytery to organize our church. Thirty members of Pleasant Hill Church were dismissed to help with the organization.
The Paris congregation has had 3 church buildings, each brick construction, and all on the same site. The first building was erected in 1840-two years before our church was organized-by a group known as the "New School" Presbyterians.
During much of the time between 1842-1908, Pleasant Hill and Paris were served together by stated supply ministers.
The first installed minister was Rev. John McFarlane in 1893. By this time, the congregation was in its second building, which was built in 1877 and used until 1919.
The history of this church was greatly influenced by pastor, Rev. C. F. Richmond, who served the church from 1898 until 1934.
In 1922 the annual report slowed a record of 200 members. Large numbers of members were added to the roll when evangelist Trigg Thomas conducted revival meetings in 1918 and again in 1932.

And on this rock I will build my church, and the powers of death shall not prevail against it. Matthew 16:18 On July 26, 1856, only 20 years after Texas won its independence, the second Presbyterian church in Dallas County was organized at Lancaster. This historic old church had its beginning in the crude work shop of a cabinet maker. Nine early pioneers and the Rev. Michael Dickson of Milford signed the first charter establishing the church. The first place of worship was a small school house where regular services were held monthly for 18 years. After the Civil War, the Ladies Aid Society raised money for a permanent church site and donated $100 to launch the building fund. On January 13, 1884, the First Presbyterian Church building was completed at a cost of $2,000 and was dedicated. This building served until 1910 when it was torn down to make way for the present building. The first Sunday School began in 1884. From its nine member beginning, the new Presbyterian Church grew slowly - to 30 members by 1868, down to 12 by 1878, up to 70 by 1888, and down to 60 by 1890.

History of St. George United Church
    Early History
Methodism was first on the scene in 1831 followed by Presbyterianism the next year and finally in 1925 Union was achieved and the St. George United Church has been active ever since. In those very early days when Methodism held sway, residents settlers if you will around the Village of St. George were eager for religious experience and spiritual guidance. So it was that in 1831, a circuit rider rode through bush country along a trail only a horse could follow, called on a few settlers, asked them to meet for a church service at Tykerts Schoolhouse, about a mile northeast of St. George, and the first Methodist services commenced in the district. A frame church was erected at the site of what is now the United Church Cemetery in about 1840. In 1867 with Rev. James Harris as pastor, the first organ was placed in the church. In 1869 the foundation stone of the Wesleyan Methodist Church, on Main Street, was laid and 10 years later came dedication of a new stone and white brick church. The circuit rider mentioned earlier was Rev. G. Ferguson and his field of labour extended into the County of Waterloo. The St. George Circuit included St. George, Sheffield, Branchton, Tranquliity, Germans, Steel's, West's, and Harrisburg.
