The best soups are made with a blending of many flavors. Don't be afraid of experimenting with them. Where you make one mistake you will be surprised to find the number of successful varieties you can produce. If you like a spicy flavor, try two or three cloves, or allspice, or bay leaves. All soups are improved by a dash of onion, unless it is the white soups, or purees from chicken, veal, fish, etc. In these celery may be used. In nothing so well as soups can a housekeeper be economical of the odds and ends of food left from meals. One of the best cooks was in the habit of saving everything, and announced one day, when her soup was especially praised, that it contained the crumbs of gingerbread from her cake box! Creamed onions left from a dinner, or a little stewed corn or tomatoes, potatoes fried or mashed, a few baked beanseven a small dish of apple saucehave often added to the flavor of soup. Of course, all good meat gravies

The First United Presbyterian Church of Fremont donated a portion of its records to the Hayes Presidential Center in 1968 (LH-160) . Additional material was donated in 1999 and is listed as an addenda (LH-295) . Selected records have been microfilmed and are available for viewing in the Hayes Presidential Center’s reading room. A photocopy of the church’s records from 1833 to 1885 appears in the Hayes Presidential Center’s reading room under the title Records of the Presbyterian Church in Lower Sandusky, Volume I 1833 - 1885 (F499 F9F51 ORR). The volume includes an index of names of members whose baptisms, dismissals, transfers, and deaths appear in the records. This index has also been entered in a genealogy database at the Hayes Presidential Center and is also available online www.rbhayes.org/index Agency History That first church was torn down in 1869 and the present building begun with the corner stone laid July 15. The following January the basement rooms were ready for the worshipers and the rest of the building completed and dedicated April 27, 1873. A Ladies Aid Society had formed to pay for the furnishings of the new church by means of socials, oyster suppers, mite-meetings, and strawberry parties. At this time there was a membership of 200 and it was decided, since the church was debt-free, to pursue a "free seat system" and welcome all people of Fremont and the vicinity.

Presbyterian Church of Oronoco
Grace Lutheran Church - Wisconsin Synod Top The early beginning, which led to the founding of this congregation is, lost to our generation, but apparently a group of German imigrants that homsteaded the area along the south branch of the Zumbro River, now known as "White Bridge" in the mid 1800's. Reverend William Lange is the first known pastor to serve these settlers along with St. Peters church in Pine Island, MN. Pastor Lange turned this congregation of settlers over to Pastor Schaaf of the Missouri Synod. They formed St. John's Lutheran Church on January 11, 1879 and worshiped in the "Coon Grove School".
In 1900, about half of the St. John's congregation left the church and formed another church in Oronoco, it was named "St Pauls".
The St John's congregation continued to meet at the Coon Grove School until the building became too small for worship (in about 1908), so they moved temporarily to the Presbyterian Church in Oronoco and held Sunday afternoon services. On February 25, 1908, a meeting was held where it was decided to erect a new church building of their own in Oronoco. This new building served the congregation well and continued with various improvements. On February 12, 1941 a special joint meeting of St Paul and St John's congregations was held with the purpose of reuniting the two congregation. With Pastor Lenz representing St Paul and Pastor Koch representing St John's, they decided to reunite. The combined congregation chose "Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church" as the new name (it's entire budget in the early years was about $3300.00 per year.). After the two churches joined, St Paul's building was used for fellowship and St John's (Grace Lutheran) for Worship and Education.

Church History
On August 4th, 1922 the first Protestant church in Sylvan Lake was dedicated to the glory of God and in memory of the early pioneers of the area, hence the name Sylvan Lake Memorial Presbyterian Church. However this was not the very beginning of this church. For several years previously people had gathered for worship in their homes and, later, in the Hazelwood Hotel and Dingwall Boarding House. These services were conducted by the people themselves or student ministers until finally their first resident minister, Rev. W.G. McKechnie , was appointed by the Board of Missions (as was each and every subsequent minister until Rev. Wilson was "called" by this congregation in 1995). Besides taking responsibility for their own worship services, these early Christian Pioneers set about raising funds for a church building. On January 5, 1921 the Ladies Aid Society was formed for this express purpose. By means of chicken suppers , teas, musical concerts and other activities the Ladies Aid Society and the Board of Managers were able to purchase the land (where the Memorial Presbyterian Church stands today) and the building materials required. The church was erected with volunteer labour and furnished with more money raised by the Ladies Aid Society. The first Communicant members listed in the 1927 records were:
  • Mrs. J. Dingwall

Wesleyan Methodist Church (4) The Wesleyan Methodist Church (4) was built in 1857 on the north side of Mount Albert Road, between Centre and Alice Streets. It was the second church built in the village. The burial ground was just north of the Church. Many of the early pioneers of the area were buried there. In 1950, the Horticultural Society cleaned up the site and placed the headstones from this burial ground and the burial ground beside the South School across the street in a cement wall at the back of the grounds. In 1954, a monument was erected to honour the pioneers. The first trustees of the Church were Thomas Rear and John Allison. In 1870, the Church was on the same circuit as the churches at Eastville (Holt), Boaks, Rayners, Mount Zion, Sharon, Ebenezer, Wesley and Mount Pleasant. In the early days, local preachers assisted the ministers. Local preachers were men in the parish who could preach the gospel. These men had to have a license to preach. Each year, to renew his license, the local preacher presented himself before the Church Board and proved that he was worthy of the position.
In the summer of 1878 the Wesleyan congregation built a new church on the east side of Alice Street, on the site of the present day United Church. This was on land donated by Mr. George Rear.

A History Ever Unfolding
The church thrives today, due to the vision, dedication, and hard work of many 19th and 20th century men, women, and children.
The Early Years: 1839-1889
On February 6, 1839, seven founding members gathered at the home of Christopher Walkup. They named their congregation the Presbyterian Church of Virginia, McHenry County, Illinois, because the earliest settlers in the area were from Western Virginia. The first minister was Rev. Lemul Hall. He lived in Geneva, Wisconsin (about twenty miles north) and rode out to the new congregation bi-weekly. A late nineteenth century church historian wrote this about the first church members: "The settler from the East, with his energy, enterprise, and economical habits, and the settler from the South with his kind, open-hearted, hospitality, exerted the one upon the other an influence that was mutually beneficial." Around 1847 a 30'X36' church was built near Mr. Walkup's house. Soon thereafter, a good brick school house was erected nearby. In 1872, the people of Ridgefield began to feel the need of a new and more suitable house of worship. This new church was 36'X56', cost $6,000, and is the same sanctuary that is seen today. When the church was finished in 1874, a parsonage was constructed costing $2,500.

History of Presbyterian Women

The first record of a women's organization at First Presbyterian Church was in 1903, calling themselves "Ladies Aid Society", with Mrs. W.P. Manley as President. The name was changed several times. In 1938 it became "Women's Organization", in 1954 "Women's Association" and after reorganization it was changed to "United Presbyterian Women" in 1961. In 1988 after the Northern and Southern Presbyterian Churches joined, the organization changed its name to Presbyterian Women.
The group divided itself into "Circles" with each having its own Chairperson, Secretary and Treasurer. The circles were named after the wives of past pastors wives. The names were chosen going back to 1879, starting with Jenny Avery. Then in chronological order by pastorates, the names were Anna Grandy, Martha Knox, Harriet Jenkins, Mary McClintock, Harriet McFadden, May Hamilton, Ruth Rippey, Emily Stimson, Bertha Lilley and Jane Skinner.
The Purpose of Presbyterian Women is to: "By God in Jesus Christ, commit ourselves, to nurture our faith through prayer and study, to support the mission of the church worldwide, to work for justice and peace and to build an inclusive, caring community."

The First Presbyterian Church This photograph is of the second church, built in 1888. After only 28 years, the Presbyterian Church had to be enlarged to suit the larger congregation. This is the present day First Presbyterian Church. This photograph was taken in 1957, shortly after the rededication. Today the church looks very much the same. The history of the First Presbyterian Church goes back well over 100 years. Some say that the first meetings of the church congregation took place in the Wagner Opera house on the corner of Chambers and Main Streets (currently the former Poppy's and McCrory's building). But, it is also stated that the original meeting place was the Theatre Comique, located on lower Main Street, a second-rate music hall dedicated to an uninhibited brand of burlesque entertainment. It was available for rent on Sundays and had a large open floor, ideal for both 'entertainment' and church services. Rev. Robert G. Williams, 39 years of age, was appointed to "labor and preach for the church for six months". He was paid $350. The church members soon moved to the the Universalist Church, on the corner of Corydon and South Avenue, and remained there until the late 1870s, when a new church was proposed, and built in its present location. The church was incorporated under the name the First Presbyterian Church of Bradford on January 8, 1879.
