"Believe t h e r e is a great power s i l e n t l y working a ll things for good b e h a v e yourself, and n e v e r mind the rest." ~ Beatrix Potter Children 's author and illustrator Helen Beatrix Potter (1866-1943) was born on this day in London, England , the only daughter of a wealthy cotton-producing family . A lonely and sheltered child, she loved animals and took up drawing and painting at a young age. Children like a fine word every now and again," she once observed. In 1890 she began illustrating greeting cards with delicate watercolors. She transformed a picture letter to a young friend into her famous classic The Tale of Peter Rabbit "Once upon a time there were four little Rabbits, and their names were Flopsy, Mopsy, Cotton-tail and Peter," she wrote... After rejections from at least six publishers, the tenacious artist used her savings to privately publish the book in 1901. She designed the small book (5-3/4" X 4-1/4") for tiny hands to hold comfortably. She found a publisher in 1902 and by the end of 1903, she had sold 50,000 copies. The first of a series of 23, the novel featured precious illustrations of Potter's furry friends and launched her remarkable career as a storyteller, celebrating

Hawkshead village lies between Lakes Windermere and Coniston, in the Vale of Esthwaite and to the north of the Grisedale Forest, about 2 miles from Beatrix Potter's Hill Top Farm at Sawrey, and 3 miles from the Windermere ferry, possibly the best and most picturesque way to approach it.
It is probably one of the prettiest villages in the whole of the Lake District National Park, which is reason enough to pay a visit, but it also has the added benefit that several key historical lakeland figures lived there for a time. It was where the poet William Wordsworth went to school, and where Beatrix Potter had a house.
The village is Norse in origin, having derived its name from Haukr, an immigrant Viking who built the first stockaded settlement there. It is a picturesque village of neat whitewashed cottages with grey local slate roofs, huddled together with cobblestoned alleyways and overhanging arches which give the whole place a sense of intimacy and quaintness, as they lead from one idyllic scene to another. In summertime, residents living around its squares seem to compete for attention with their splendidly colourful flower tubs and window boxes.

'WONDER AND MATTER-OF-FACT' MEET OR
THE IMAGINATION OF BEATRIX POTTER
By Marcia Rackow

I llustration from THE TALE OF PETER RABBIT by Beatrix Potter
For over a century, Beatrix Potter's art, her wonderful imagination have affected children and adults all over the world. There's hardly a person who doesn't know The Tale of Peter Rabbit ! Her pictures and stories while charming and delightful, are also deep — and they show something vital and thrilling about imagination which every person, every parent, every child needs to know. As an artist and teacher I've come to love and value her work even more through my study of Aesthetic Realism, the philosophy founded in 1941 by the great American poet and critic Eli Siegel, whose centenary is being celebrated this year. I learned that there are two kinds of imagination in every person: good and bad. In "Imagination, Reality, and Aesthetics," a chapter from his book Self and World , Eli Siegel explains: The difference between the imagination of art and the imagination of everyday life is that where in art imagination serves to show the self by showing the world, imagination in "life" is used to make the self comfortable, without necessarily showing it.

    Beatrix Potter (1866-1943)
In 2002 it was 100 years since The Tale of Peter Rabbit™ was first published by Beatrix Potter. Let's look back at her early life and her achievements as a writer and as someone who eventually lived and worked in the countryside.
    Childhood
    • On the 28th July 1866, Helen Beatrix Potter was born at 2 Bolton Gardens, London.
    • The young girl enjoyed books by Lewis Carroll, Edward Lear, Maria Edgeworth and Uncle Remus
    • Bertram, her younger brother, was not born until she was 5 years old, so Beatrix had lots of pets for company. One was Peter - a rabbit. Beatrix used to draw and paint lifelike images of her pets.
