Molière (Jean-Baptiste Poquelin)
Jean-Baptiste Poquelin, best known as Molière, (Paris, France, 1622 - 1673), French theatre writer, director and actor, one of the masters of satire. The son of a Parisian artisan, Poquelin lost his mother when still a child and entered the prestigious Jesuits' Collège de Clermont, to complete his studies. It is said that his father was very hard to him, or that in this college he met the prince of Conti, or that he was a pupil of the philosopher Gassendi, but these statements appear to be not really more than unverified hypothesis. In reality, Poquelin was a close friend of the abbé La Mothe Le Vayer, the son of the famous philosopher, in the years in which the abbé was reordering his father's works, and this allows to presume that Poquelin could be somehow influenced by them.
Among his first works, he wrote a translation of De Rerum Natura by Lucretius , now lost. At the age of 18, his father left him the title of Tapissier du Roi , and the annexed charge of valet de chambre by which he could be in frequent contact with the king. Poquelin is supposed having graduated in law at Orléans in 1642 (but some doubts however remain). In June 1643, together with his lover Madeleine Béjart and a brother and a sister of her, he founded the

January 15 ~  All You Have to Do Is Pause The Artist's Way
A l l you have to do is pause—it’s our i m p a t i e n c e that spoils things." ~ Molière The playwright Molière (1622-1673) was born Jean Baptiste Poquelin on this day in Paris . He received the finest education possible at a Jesuit college and his family expected him to join the family business or become a lawyer. Instead, he chose the then-scandalous life of the stage. "I live on good soup, not fine words ,"he once said and pursued acting with a passion , changing his name and joining a troupe of actors to master every aspect of the theater. He wrote his satirical full-length comedies in verse and poetry . A master of language and farce, the playwright founded the Illustre Theater in 1643 and was sponsored by King Louis XIV. Molière caused an uproar in 1664 with his play Tartuffe , a juicy indictment of the religious hypocrite. The brilliant artist once observed, "Doubts are more cruel that the worst of truths The Misanthrope , what many consider his masterpiece, was written in 1666. Other famous satires include The School for Wives The Doctor in Spite of Himself The Miser (1668), and

The first of the greater works of Moliere was "Les Precieuses Ridicules," produced in 1659. In this brilliant piece Moliere lifted French comedy to a new level and gave it a new purpose - the satirizing of contemporary manners and affectations by frank portrayal and criticism. In the great plays that followed, "The School for Husbands" and "The School for Wives," "The Misanthrope" and "The Hypocrite" (Tartuffe), "The Miser" and "The Hypochondriac," "The Learned Ladies," "The Doctor in Spite of Himself," "The Citizen Turned Gentleman," and many others, he exposed mercilessly one after another the vices and foibles of the day.
[See Moliere: Moliere in audience with Louis XIV at Versailles.]
His characteristic qualities are nowhere better exhibited than in "Tartuffe." Compared with such characterization as Shakespeare `s, Moliere`s method of portraying life may seem to be lacking in complexity; but it is precisely the simplicity with which creations like Tartuffe embody the weakness or vice they represent that has given them their place as universally types of human nature.

Scene I
Damis, Dorine
Damis
May lightning strike me dead this very instant,
May I be everywhere proclaimed a scoundrel,
If any reverence or power shall stop me,
And if I don`t do straightway something desperate!
Dorine
I beg you, moderate this towering passion; Your father did but merely mention it. Not all things that are talked of turn to facts; The road is long, sometimes, from plans to acts. Damis No, I must end this paltry fellow`s plots, And he shall hear from me a truth or two. Dorine So ho! Go slow now. Just you leave the fellow - Your father too - in your step - mother`s hands. She has some influence with this Tartuffe, He makes a point of heeding all she says, And I suspect that he is fond of her. Would God `twere true! - `Twould be the height of humour Now, she has sent for him, in your behalf, To sound him on this marriage, to find out What his ideas are, and to show him plainly

Moliere, Jean Baptiste Poquelin de Tartuffe: or, the French Puritan London 1707 Molière, Jean Baptiste Poquelin de. Tartuffe: or, the French Puritan. A comedy acted at the Theatre-Royal. Written in French by Moliere, and render'd into English, with much addition and advantage, by M. Melbourne, servant to His Royal Highness. London: printed for Richard Wellinton, 1707. (6)66 pp. 4to, half calf, gilt, by Lloyd (slight rubbing). Second edition (though not so designated); first printed in 1670. The first English version of Molière's masterpiece, originally staged in France in 1667. This adaptation by Matthew Medbourne, a prominent member of the company at the Duke's Theatre, stays fairly close to Molière's text, though a certain amount of low farce has been interpolated. Freer use of the same play was later made by Etherege, Crowne, Cibber, Fielding, and Bickerstaffe. Slight foxing, but a fine copy, from the library of Edmund Gosse (sold at Sotheby's in 1929). Both editions are uncommon. CBEL II, 1522. This item is listed on Bibliopoly by Ximenes Rare Books Inc ; click here for further details.

http://membres.lycos.fr/moliere/moliere.html
