'Tis hard to say, if greater Want of Skill
Appear in Writing or in Judging ill,
But, of the two, less dang'rous is th' Offence,
To tire our Patience, than mis-lead our Sense:
Some few in that, but Numbers err in this,
Ten Censure wrong for one who Writes amiss;
A Fool might once himself alone expose,
Now One in Verse makes many more in Prose.
'Tis with our Judgments as our Watches, none
Go just alike, yet each believes his own. In Poets as true Genius is but rare, True Taste as seldom is the Critick's Share; Both must alike from Heav'n derive their Light, These born to Judge, as well as those to Write.

Alexander Pope
Born: 21st May 1688
at Lombard Street, London
Poet
Died: 30th May 1744 at Twickenham, Middlesex
The famous poet was the son of Alexander Pope Senior, a rich merchant and linen-draper, and of Edith, daughter William Turner of York. Alexander Junior was born in Lombard Street in the City of London; but before he had reached his twelfth year, his father - having recently converted to Catholicism - bought a small estate (now Pope's Manor) at Binfield in Berkshire. Here, the boy grew up. He had already begun to lisp in numbers, had dramatized scenes from Homer and had met Dryden. His schooling was obtained at various private Catholic schools and, at home, from priests. At no other time does his religion appear to have been at all a makeweight in his social or educational progress; but Pope certainly grew up more furnished with scholarly instincts than with actual scholarship. After an infantile illness, which had left him dwarfed and deformed, yet with a face of great attractiveness, he was always in rather delicate health, but was able to ride and to superintend work in a garden. The first publication of Pope’s to attract attention was his Pastorals

Alexander Pope
Samuel Johnson’s Lives of the English Poets records a statement, attributed to Lady Bolingbroke, to the effect that Pope could "hardly drink tea without a stratagem". Pope’s career was, indeed, an almost relentless story of intrigues, quarrels and deceptions conducted against his enemies in the literary world and leading society of his age. He was born in Lombard Street, London on 21 st May 1688, the son of a linen draper. By 1700, his family had moved to Binfield in Windsor Forest. A precocious child, he began to study Latin and Greek at the age of eight. When he was twelve, he developed a severe illness as a result of which his constitution was greatly weakened and his figure permanently deformed – he never, apparently, grew above the height of 4ft. 6inches. After attending schools in Twyford (near Winchester) and London, he returned to his father’s house where most of his time was spent in reading or writing. He managed to become acquainted with the influential wits of his time, including Sir William Turnbull, William Walsh the critic and William Wycherley the dramatist.

Alexander Pope (1688-1744)
One of the great names in English poetry of the early eighteenth century is that of Alexander Pope. As a little boy of twelve, Pope had gazed with pupil's eyes at the figure of the elderly Dry-den, seated in his favourite chair at Will's Coffee-house. Only a few years later Mr. Pope was acclaimed as Dryden's successor in the ''first rank of English poets. Pope's father, a well-to-do linen-draper in London, was a Roman Catholic; and the laws of eighteenth-century England placed upon Roman Catholics very serious disabilities. A Roman Catholic could not send his son to great public schools or to the universities, nor even send him abroad. Poper's education was gained irregularly from private tutors and from his own voracious reading. He was deprived of usual human contacts of school and university. A severe illness at the age of twelve left him for the rest of his life a crippled invalid. He was about four feet, six inches tall, hump-backed, subject to frequent and terrible headaches. His religion made him ineligible for any government offices, such as those held by Addison and by Steele, and closed to him the learned professions; his physical deformity cut him off from many other activities. Before the age of fifteen he had written an epic poem, which he later destroyed. His Pastorals, published in 1709, won instant recognition by the exquisite music of their verse. Then in quick succession came the Essay on Criticism (1711), The Rape of the Lock (1712, revised 1714), and Windsor Forest (1713). Before he was twenty-five. Pope was clearly recognized as the greatest living poet. When in 1713 he proposed a translation of Homer's Iliad, it was regarded as a great national event. Everyone of importance subscribed in advance for copies of the work, which appeared in six volumes, published at intervals between 1715 and 1720. His translation of the Odyssey (1725—26) was a great success.

Alexander Pope (16881744). Poet, born in London, England, UK, to aRoman Catholic family in the year of the Protestant Revolution.
http://www.ourcivilisation.com/smartboard/shop/popea/about.htm
Alexander Pope Poet, born in London, England, UK, to a Roman Catholic family in the year of the Protestant Revolution. In 1700 the family settled at Binfield, Berkshire. Debarred from university because of his religion, and largely self taught, he suffered from poor health caused by tuberculosis, and asthma, and had a curvature of the spine, his resulting diminutive stature (4 ft 6 in) providing a target for critics, since he was frequently engaged in literary vendettas. He became well known as a satirical poet, and a master of the heroic couplet, notably in The Rape of the Lock (1712-1714). He turned to translation with the Iliad (1715-1720), whose success enabled him to set up a home in Twickenham, but he was forced to remove himself from London following further anti-Catholic measures after the Jacobite rebellion of 1713. However he formed a friendship with his neighbour, Lady Mary Wortley Montagu, which was very important to him but soured after 1723. There he wrote his major poem, The Dunciad (1728, continued 1742), the

Know then thyself, presume not God to scan; The proper study of mankind is Man. Placed on this isthmus of a middle state, A being darkly wise, and rudely great: With too much knowledge for the skeptic side, 5 With too much weakness for the Stoic's pride, He hangs between; in doubt to act, or rest, In doubt to deem himself a god, or beast; In doubt his mind or body to prefer, Born but to die, and reasoning but to err; 10 Alike in ignorance, his reason such, Whether he thinks too little, or too much: Chaos of thought and passion, all confused; Still by himself abused, or disabused; Created half to rise, and half to fall; 15 Great lord of all things, yet a prey to all; Sole judge of truth, in endless error hurled: The glory, jest, and riddle of the world!
