Product News highlights new products of interest to our readers. These are not product endorsements, nor are they paid advertisements. Information and news releases furnished by the members of PR Newswire, who are responsible for their fact and content. Known as Net-Mom(TM) by cyberkids everywhere, Polly's unique background as a public librarian, children's Internet expert, and mother makes her the perfect Internet tour guide for kids and families. By capturing so many valuable and child-friendly alternatives, her new book derails the problem of children being exposed to violence and other adult content on the Internet. "It's important to remember that the Internet is not the enemy," said Polly. "The Net is only the transport method, just like the telephone system. What needs to be filtered out are the places you can 'call.'" Polly and her research team of professional librarians, teachers, and Internet specialists carefully hand-selected only the best, safest, and most appropriate listings for family use. All of the listings are organized by subject category in an easy-to-use, alphabetical directory and include detailed site descriptions and personal recommendations. Kids of all ages can now safely access thousands of fun and educational web sites on their favorite topics such as Books and Literature, Comics and Cartoons, Endangered and Extinct Species, Pets and Pet Care, Music and Musicians, Sports, and more.

Monty Moose is one of many stuffed animals that travel the world and report about their adventures to Mrs. Boekhout's class at the Nestor Elementary School in British Columbia, Canada. In fact Monty was the first "stuffie" to go on a stuffie exchange with another classroom across the world. One of Monty's trips took him to visit Jean Armour Polly, author of Bird Studies Canada . She offered to drive Monty to the Lab of Ornithology for a visit. Monty and his class were thrilled. The class routinely visits the project's web site to submit data and to watch birds at the Lab's feeders through FeederCam . Monty volunteered to help fill the Lab's feeders while Mrs. Boekhout's class watched from Canada through the FeederCam. Monty Visits Monty came to the Lab on Thursday, February 19, 2004. Andy King
First registered in March 1995, this Michigan license plate (WEBMSTR) adorns the rear of a gold 1998 Honda Accord. The front plate reads WEBREF, which when typed into your browser, redirects to webreference.com. One of the principals of Athenia Associates, and an employee of internet.com as WebReference.com's Managing Editor/webmaster, Andy King tried out numerous combinations of possible plates for fun when he was younger, including his personal favorite IAMYODA. Andrew decided instead to grab a vanity plate about his profession, that of WEBMASTER. WEBMSTR fit nicely and Andrew enjoys the smiles he sees in his rear view mirror.
Rich Wiggins
First registered in 1993. This Michigan plate is currently registered to a reliable aging hunk of metal, a 1987 Mercury Grand Marquis. Rich's significant other, Judy Matthews, wanted to get him an INTERNET plate when Rich started work on a book

With these 3 print directories, teachers can surf with certainty tech.k12 / Joyce Kasman Valenza Directories help us plan and locate the things we need when we need them. It would be tough to find a home without the Yellow Pages or a family room without the television listings. A directory is perhaps even more critical for planning our use of the Web with children. With its millions of items to index, selection and quality control of Web resources are major issues. For teachers, directories can be a first step in integrated lesson planning and a major tool in designing classroom-tailored directories, whether on a Web page or simply a list of bookmarks. With limited access to workstations and limited time online, planning may be essential. "You can't carry the whole Internet around with you. You can share a book with others, especially people who really haven't seen the Internet. Your principal, your parents, your grandparents each will have their own hot buttons. It could be astronomy or recipes using asparagus," she said. Polly says books can be a "good convincer" of the Internet's value, especially if you can help a person find his or her own niche topic. "Books are great for pre-surfing," she said. "It saves people a lot of time. They can plan their Internet adventure offline. I may not want to look up every Web page on the United Kingdom, but I could browse through the links in a book to find good starting points." And speaking of the United Kingdom, Polly's Yellow Pages devotes 111 pages to countries of the world. While most of those other thick yellow Web directories do a fine job, Polly's is really the only comprehensive offline guidebook for children, listing more that 3,500 child-friendly sites.

Internet Mom (www.familypc.com) SGT Mom's Kidz (www.sgtmoms.com) Kathleen Motteler is Sgt Mom. Kathleen is an army wife and mother currently stationed at NAB Little Creek VA. She first dreamed up the idea for SGT MOM'S when she felt a need for a more casual form of support that couldn't be found in official channels. Being an army wife meant losing friends every time they moved. When she moved one more time she found that although she treasured her children dearly, she craved friends and adult conversation. In her own words, I'll let Kathleen tell you how she wandered around cyberspace, clueless about where she was going or how to get there. It'll also show you how nervous she was getting online. And just look! A few years later and she's one of the leading "moms" online. It'll inspire even the most fearful among you. [After we got our computer] Updated: 4/17/04

by Jean Armour Polly This 576-page softcover book is nearly twice the size of the first edition with its topical content well-organized in alphabetical order. I consider this book a requirement for all kids who surf the Net, whether they're at home or in school. It also is a great reference book which serves up a healthy menu of quality Internet resources for kids and familieseasily accessible to newbies and intermediate users. If you know a skeptical parent or two who believes the Internet is loaded with bad stuff or if you'd like to encourage your child's teacher to become Net-savvy and blend more technology into the classroom, this book would be also be ideal. Aside from providing a slew of "family friendly" web sites, it also shows that with the proper guidance (including tips on parental filtering software, magic cookies, how to stop unwanted e-mail and more) the Net can be a ideal educational resource and source of fun for kids. Net-mom web site, which has a lot of hypertext links from the book, that are easy to double-click (instead of entering lengthy URLs). It would have been nice if this book came with a CD-ROM, which would help eliminate the need for kids to type (and make typos on) individual web site addresses. Perhaps, there's hope for aCD-ROM included with the Third Edition (or a stand-alone CD-ROM)!
