Poe wrote of poetry's purity in his criticism, while writing theatre reviews that would shift copies for their ruthlessness. He began his literary career with verse that would charm readers with its musicality, and became famous for later stories of imponderable bleakness.

One the greatest and unhappiest of American poets, a master of the horror tale, patron saint to the practitioners of the detective story. Poe's stormy personal life postponed honest evaluation of his work in the United States - first he gained critical acclaim in France and England. His reputation in America was relatively slight until the French-influenced writers like Ambroce Bierce, Robert W. Chambers, and representatives of the Lovecraft school secured his place in the literary hall of fame.

Edgar A. Poe
T he life of Edgar A. Poe was checkered by an alternating series of successes and failures, of breakdowns and recoveries, of hopes engendered and dashed despite which (or, perhaps, because of which) he produced brilliant literature that assured his enduring stature as America's finest writer of psychological horror and as one of her best poets. In addition, Poe is credited with defining the modern short story, creating the first literary detective (Monsieur C. Auguste Dupin), and writing some of the first science fiction. Edgar Allan Poe (1809 ~ 1849)
Edgar Allan Poe was bom in Boston. His mother, an itinerant actress, died in 1811, and the boy was adopted by John Allan, a wealthy merchant. From 1815 to 1820 the Allans lived in England, and the boy attended school there. When the family returned to Richmond, he went to the local academy. By his seventeen Poe received the normal education of a young gentleman. In 1826 he went to the University of Virginia, but was removed from there in 1827. The same year he ran off to Boston where he published Tamerlane and Other Poems. Then he enlisted in the army and in 1830 entered the Military Academy at West Point. In the meantime he had published his second volume of verse, AI Aaraaf, Tamerlane and Minor Poems (1829). After being discharged from West Point in 1831, he went to Baltimore and spent there four years. Poe began writing short stories. After the success of MS Found in a Bottle (1833) he had editorial jobs ki Baltimore, New York and Philadelphia, and was successfully engaged in writing articles and short stories for periodicals. While living in Philadelphia from 1838 to 1844 Poe wrote his best stories which were collected as Tales of the Grotesque and Arabesque (1840). Further editorial troubles caused him once again to move to New York, where he published The Raven and Other Poems and Tales, both in 1845. By the middle of the fourties Poe was a well-known member of the New York literary circle. The last of his works was Eureka: A Prose Poem, published in 1848.

It is generally considered to be the first detective story (called "a tale of ratiocination" by Poe) and the origin of many of the genre's prototypes: the 'locked-room' crime, the sidekick-narrator, the gentleman-amateur detective from whom no orangutan can hope to escape. Slavni pisci alkoholièari
Edgar Allan Poe (1809.-1849.)
U formi detektivskog romana ta æe knji¾evna vrsta postati popularna tek kasnije. Cijeli je ¾ivot bio neshvaæen i nesretan. Emerson ga je zvao "zveketalo" Èitajuæi djela E.A. Poa mo¾emo bolje razumjeti i osjetiti svu usamljenost, strah i nemoæ kao i prazninu ¹to ih ostavljaju alkohol i droga.

Obviously, the reader from Miami, Florida filed the wrong review. This book is not the Poe short story "The Purloined Letter" (which, by the way, is a good story), but, rather a philosophical and psychoanalitical study of Poe.

This book makes many original contributions to the study of Poe and his times. As I read through it, I began to understand what Poe must have felt as he struggled to make it as a professional writer. The book has something for everyone: capitalism, slavery, desperate acts of deception, and a fascinating link between Poe and Charles Babbage, who invented the prototype of the modern computer. 98. CyberTour: Edgar Allan Poe

http://dcls.org/x/archives/poe.html
Edgar Allan Poe's name is synonymous with horror. However, his contribution to American literature far exceeds the dark and macabre. Poe also wrote romantic poetry, black comedy, science fiction, broad farce, and is considered by many to be the father of the detective story. It is no wonder that each of the cities Poe lived in - Boston, MA; Richmond, VA; New York, NY; Philadelphia, PA; and Baltimore, MD - honors him as one of their own. For the true devotee, a pilgrimage to the monuments erected to Poe is a must, but trips up and down the eastern seaboard are not always a viable option. Fortunately, there is the World Wide Web. As a testimony to Poe's enduring popularity, there are websites that explore Poe's work, his life, even his grave site. The best place to begin is with the works of Poe himself. There are several selective collections on line, but the The Edgar Allan Poe Society of Baltimore has undertaken the daunting task of placing all of Poe's works online.
The Poe Webliography, is a critical guide to electronic resources for Poe research on the World Wide Web. It is probably the most comprehensive websites on Poe-related Internet sites.
Another large Poe site is available at Edgar Allan Poe's House of Usher.
