Classroom Issues and Strategies
Students confuse Poe's narrator with the author, so that in stories involving drug addiction and murders, students often say "Poe this" and "Poe that" when they mean the narrator of the tale. Poe's reputation for alcohol abuse, drug abuse, poverty, and bizarre personal habitsall exaggeratedoften comes up in classroom discussion and should be relegated to the irrelevant. Students ask: "Was he an alcoholic?" "Was he a drug addict?" "Was he insane?" I quickly try to divert attention from such gossip to the themes of Jacksonian America, asking them to ponder the nature and value of Poe's vision. I have a slide lecture, largely biographical, which always is well received. Lacking such materials, I would recommend a line-by-line reading of the major poems, with explanations as you go along. Particularly "The Raven" and "Ulalume" are understandable by this method. I would also prepare students for effects late in "Ligeia," then have them read aloud the last few pages of this tale. I always prepare the class for the Poe segment with a quick review of President Andrew Jackson's policies and what is meant by "Jacksonian Democracy." I believe this to be essential for a study of Poe.

B. Tamerlane, and Other Poems (1827, anonym).
Oktober 1849 in Baltimore.

The Story: Edgar Allan Poe [1809-1849] had a fascination with cryptography. Besides numerous references to secret writings in some of his poems and stories such as The Gold-Bug , he conducted his own "cryptographic challenge" that was published in Alexander's Weekly Messenger beginning in December, 1839. For this series of articles Poe challenged his readers to submit their cryptographs to him, asserting that he would solve them all. For the next six months Poe published solutions to the ciphers submitted by his readers, and shared his views on the nature of cryptography. Poe's association with the Messenger ended in May, 1840, but he took up the subject approximately a year later in an article he wrote for

Edgar Allan Poe, critic, mystery and short story writer, but most importantly a poet, all these titles help to describe the multitalented genius that is Edgar Allan Poe. Edgar Allan Poe lived only 40 short years (1809-1849), yet his body of work is as rich a literary legacy as any published author. Poe was born into an acting family, both mother and father were actors, but their tragic death in 1812, left young Edgar to be raised by his Godfather John Allan, a wealthy merchant in Richmond Virginia. Poe was educated abroad and later at the University of Virginia. His relationship with his Godfather was not always an easy one; arguments over Edgar's gambling eventually led to a parting of ways and a tour of duty in the army for Poe due to financial necessity. There was a reconciliation with John Allan, only to have the relationship chill again once John Allan remarried. Tamerlane and other poems (1827) was Edgar Allen Poe's first published literary work, followed by two other works a few years later. These early works were not met with the critical acclaim that would later be bestowed upon him. He moved to Baltimore to live with his Aunt Clemm and her daughter Virginia. He secured a job as editor of the

Edgar Allan Poe, 1809-1849 Edgar Allan Poe was born in Boston, Massachusetts, to parents who were itinerant actors. His father David Poe Jr. died probably in 1810 and his mother Elizabeth Hopkins Poe in 1811, leaving three children, of whom William died young and Rosalie ultimately lost her mind. Edgar was taken into the home of a Richmond merchant John Allan and brought up partly in England (1815-20), where he attended Manor School at Stoke Newington. Never legally adopted, Poe took Allan's name for his middle name. Poe suffered from bouts of depression and madness, and he attempted suicide in 1848. In September the following year he disappeared for three days after a drink at a birthday party and on his way to visit his new fiancée in Richmond. He turned up in delirious condition in Baltimore gutter and died on October 7, 1849. Click on the cart to download your book / Haz clic en el carrito para descargar tu libro.

Mestres do conto do Século XIX - Edgar Allan Poe EDGAR ALLAN POE (1809-1849)

, short-story writer, poet, and critic. The son of itinerant actors, Poe was orphaned at two and was adopted by John Allan, a Richmond, Virginia, merchant and his wife. They gave Poe his middle name and a genteel childhood but eventually became the source of profound unhappiness. Allan was unfaithful to his wife, and when Poe took her part, Allan turned on him savagely. Although Allan violently opposed Poe's literary career, he unwittingly encouraged it. His firm imported many foreign books and magazines, which Poe read assiduously, giving him a literary sophistication far beyond his Richmond peers. Allan sent Poe to the University of Virginia with no spending money; when the boy ran up heavy gambling debts, his foster father refused to pay. After a bitter quarrel, Poe left home to seek literary fame. Poe moved to Boston in 1827 where he published a book of poems but almost starved. He enlisted in the army and soon became sergeant major of his regiment. A reconciliation with Allan, motivated largely by Poe's hope of an inheritance, led to an appointment to West Point. There he began brilliantly, but another falling out with Allan plunged him into depression. He stopped attending classes and drills and was dismissed in 1831. His cadet friends helped finance a book of poems containing some of his best lyrics, "Israfel" and "The Doomed City," but the book was hardly noticed.

Edgar Allan Poe
Edgar Allan Poe is one of the best-known American authors, but his literary legacy is complex and confusing. Poe pioneered many of the most enduring forms of American popular culture, including the detective story, science fiction, and the gothic or sensational tale; yet he also exerted a profound influence on Modernism through the enthusiasm of Charles Baudelaire and the French Symbolist poets. Poe’s fiction celebrates both the hyper-rationality of his detective double, C. Auguste Dupin, and the inability of philosophy to account for the perverse. Poe maintained that authors should begin by considering their writing’s effect on the reader; yet he was highly critical of sentimentality and didacticism, insisting that beauty, understood as the elevation of the soul, was the essence of true poetry.
Born in Boston on July 19, 1809, Edgar Poe was the second child of Elizabeth and David Poe, itinerant actors who performed in theaters in eastern seaboard cities from Massachusetts to South Carolina. David Poe abandoned the family while Poe was still an infant. When his mother died in December 1811 while appearing at the Richmond Theater, Poe was taken in by a prosperous Virginia merchant and his wife, John and Frances Allan.
