Internet Exercises Introduction Comstock Act . Yet the convergence of Americans into cities also created new cultural opportunities for urban dwellers. Public education became more easily available on the high school and college level. Department stores made consumer goods more accessible and alluring to the average customer. Vaudeville and professional sports provided new kinds of entertainment. For better and for worse, the cities became the focus of a new American society.
Immigration Under Attack
The Web activities for this chapter will explore the physical development of cities and the social, political, and cultural consequences of their growth. The additional research links will examine other elements of the newly developing urban culture. Web Activities Swedish Emigration examines the reasons for one of the mass emigration movements from Europe to the United States. Why did so many Swedes leave their homeland? Did the reasons change over the course of the nineteenth century? Where did they settle in the United States? Why did they choose these places? Now go to Immigration at the Turn of the 20th Century . Click on "The Changing Character of Immigration" and read this article about immigration written in 1900. How does this author describe the immigrants arriving in the U.S? From where does she believe they come? What concerns her about them? How does she judge their prospects for success in the United States? Now go back and read the other article, "Americans in the Raw," at this site. How do this author's views concur with the previous author? How are they different? What do the photos in these articles suggest about the immigrants? Do these articles explain the attacks on immigrants as in the picture on this page?

Riding With the King
The best Washington Post columnist you've never heard of.
By Jack Shafer
Posted Thursday, Jan. 9, 2003, at 2:48 PM PT
What misguided journalistic convention compels op-ed editors to drain the ©lan vital from copy? Oh, a few well-known columnists run the blockade to blend blood with ink and animate newspaperdom's opinion pages: the pun-drunk warmonger William Safire ; the shiv-wielding Michael Kelly ; that Shecky Greene of the policy debate, Michael Kinsley ; desperate entertainer Maureen Dowd ; and a handful of others. But most op-ed pages prefer pieces painted with gray and dead words, if only to signal the seriousness of their page. Some writers require no such prodding and actually prefer the color of ash. The high exemplar of this form is syndicated columnist William Pfaff , whose last name conveniently works as a verb to describe the act of lifeless writing. Listen to this recent pfaffing The NATO debate has included warnings disconnected from real threats and policy proposals irrelevant to their solution. America wants help in carrying out a policy fatefully influenced by the notion that conquering Iraq will permit Washington and Israel to take control of the Islamic Middle East and its peoples—and that this will have a happy ending.

How I Became a Democrat by Chris Bowers
I am a recent convert to the Democratic party. While I voted for Clinton in 1992 as an apple-cheeked 18-year old, until the Blogosphere and the Dean campaign entered my life, I had regularly associated with radical left-wing parties and groups rather than Democratic ones. Ideologically, I have not changed drastically from my radical days, but despite this I do not feel out of place in a party that includes the Democratic Leadership Council (as I explained in a different article ). This is the story of how I changed, and why I believe we all need to embrace personal experience as an important part of the political process. Click on the extended entry to read the story
Democrats

A few months ago, Sam Smith, editor of The Progressive Review, published an excellent op-ed piece, The Non-Political Side of Politics . Here is his central thesis: [P]eople only get involved in politics in large numbers when it becomes more than politics, when it is more than a logical, thoughtful and well constructed process, when it is more even than a ideology. They get involved when politics becomes a normal, convivial, exciting and satisfying part of their social existence. I want to talk for a moment about the non-rational, inefficient, even sometimes almost indescribable elements of a politics that works. The first Dean Meetup I went to was in early May, 2003. It was held in the upper floor of Buffalo Billiards on Restaurant Row, in Old City, Philadelphia. I had just finished teaching my final set of classes for the semester, and before final exams and seminar papers starting flooding my inbox and my office, I had some cash to burn. Perhaps because I offered to pay for drinks that night, my brother agreed to come along with me.

DBQ QUESTION Analyze the social and cultural changes as well as the political and economic changes associated with urban growth in the Gilded Age. DOCUMENT A The problem of our age is the proper administration of wealth so that the ties of brotherhood may still bind together the rich and the poor in harmony. The conditions of human life have been revolutionized within the past few hundred years. The contrast between the palace of the millionaire and the cottage of the laborer with us today measures the change which has come with civilization.
This change, however is not to be deplored, but welcomed as highly beneficial. It is essential for the progress of the race that the houses of some should be homes for all that is highest and best in literature and arts, rather than none should be so. Much better great inequity than universal squalor....
The price which society pays for the law of competition, like the price it pays for cheap comforts and luxuries, is also great; but the advantages of this law are also greater still. For it is to this law that we owe out wonderful material development which brings improved conditions. While the law may be sometimes hard for the individual, it is best for the race, because it insures the survival of the fittest in every departmant. We welcome, therefore, as conditions to which we must accommodate ourselves, great inequality of comprtition between these, as being not only beneficial, but essential for the future progress of the race.

Position Paper #20Taxes and Appropriations of "Equal" Men (e-mailings initiated June 20, 2000)
We continue to candidly examine the "Facts" as to tyranny in TAXES and APPROPRIATIONS. In the 18 th century, King George III and the Parliament in Great Britain could not be brought to examine the "Facts". It fell to the representatives of the 13 original States to do so, and therewith declare independence in 1776. Like the Tories then, in the year 2000, the Republican and Democratic parties, and the federal government in Washington, D. C., favor "the preservation of the existing political order". They refuse to examine the "Facts" of mal-government. Again we must look to our Governors, Lt. Governors, and State legislators, to lead "We the People" of each State to deliberate, and take concerted action among the States, to overcome the shortcomings of our nation that detract from our National Security. For the Week of August 26, 2002
Silk is an amazing substance . It's very soft, even sensual, but also stunningly strong. It's also perfectly natural, the creation of a moth seeking to cocoon itself while it transforms into a final form that will flit about long enough to reproduce, then die. To gain the benefits of silk (and other treasures) Muslim traders during what Europe would call the Middle Ages plied the "silk road" across Asia. It was a lawless, unregulated path, something like the modern Internet. (It also held great wonders like the stone Buddhas blown-up a few years ago by the Taliban.) After Marco Polo discovered the road, the race was on to get around it and seize the riches of the Orient for the "great nations of Europe."
