Afrikaners Versus English
The British arrived at the Cape of Good Hope in 1795 and immediately came into conflict with the Dutch over the issue of slavery. The initial aim of the British was to secure a stop-off on the way to Asia, but they soon became involved in the business of the colony. In 1807, the British banned slave ownership.
TREK
The British finally subdued the Dutch in 1806, and in 1834 they banned the trade in slaves. The Afrikaners hugely resented this and set off north over the Orange River, taking their cattle, wagons and servants with them to pursue their own way of life. Ironically, the land they occupied, the Transvaal, became a magnet for every European speculator in the region, since it contained some of the largest gold deposits in the world. By moving north, the Afrikaners clashed with the Ndebele, and most famously with the Zulus in 1838 at the battle of Blood River.
NEW STATE
The Afrikaner Republic of the Orange Free State was established in 1852; that of the Transvaal in 1854. The British meanwhile set up a colony in the west of South Africa in Natal. Here, they appropriated land and created reserves for Africans, bringing in large numbers of Indians to work on five year contracts.

Known as "Jake the Snake," he was a goalie, 1952-75, mostly with Montreal. Jacques Plante was the first goalie to use a mask as part of his playing equipment. Previously, some goalies wore masks while recovering from injuries. His practice of roaming from the net to play the puck for his defensemen brought an entirely new dimension to the game. In an astonishing string of seasons beginning in 1955-56, Plante won the Vezina Trophy — and led the Montreal Canadiens to the Stanley Cup — for five straight years. He made eight all-star appearances in all. He died February 27, 1986 in Geneva, Switzerland - Canada CAN2000B06.6

The Sol Plaatje Programme The Sol Plaatje Programme for the Development of Teacher Education in South Africa In his 'Call to Action' statement issued on 27th July 1999, South Africa's Minister of Education, Professor Kader Asmal MP outlined his education priorities. He wrote: "Despite our success stories we are failing especially with those wide-flung tracts of the [education] system that serve poor urban and rural communities. Our new systems of governance, administration and finance have not yet succeeded in hauling these communities out of the arbitrary and unequal conditions imposed by generations of apartheid and minority rule. In some areas and some respects the situation has deteriorated." A most serious weakness is that one third of all educators in South African schools are under-qualified or unqualified. This is a result of poor teacher training and education during the decades of apartheid rule. Changes in the curriculum, in the methods of governance and funding included in the Outcomes Based National Qualification Framework, Curriculum 2005 and the South African Schools Act make additional demands on teachers and emphasise the need for further training.

Checking out family pictures always brings out a wealth of family stories, secretes and histories and for sure in South Africa with our history, stories are bound to be interesting, tragic, fascinating and funny and reveal loads about this nation's history too. Group Portrait, South African Family Stories is an exhibition that tells the stories of South Africa through the lifestories of 9 South African families.
The exhibition was curated by the Royal Tropical Institute in Amsterdam and drew huge audiences in Holland last year. The exhibition South African Family Stories deals with the history of the South African society in the last century. It does so in a special, unusual way. Instead of providing an overview of a complex history of a complex society, the exhibition takes the micro-approach. It tells the story of the country through the lives of nine real families, with different social, cultural, economical and geographical backgrounds.Their stories will be followed, from the end of the 19th century, up till the present day. The exhibition follows each family through successive generations. One or two members in each generation will lead the public through the ups and downs of their families, related to South African history. A teenager, who also expresses ideas about the future, will represent the last generation. So in each family a string of main characters is formed, drawing nine twisted lines through history.

Verhalen over vroeger.

Clare Wyllie
Thumi Plaatje is fast becoming part of the post apartheid political elite - quite independently of her husband Popo Molefe, Premier of the North West Province. She sees herself as completing the work of her ancestor, Soloman Plaatje - author, intellectual, and leader in the early ANC, who devoted his life to fighting for a better life for African people in South Africa.
I am perched on the end of the bed in Thumi's hotel room. Thumi is in Amsterdam for the opening of the Tropenmuseum exhibition, in which her family features. She has caught horrible European flu, and retreated for an afternoon rest, but welcomes me in.
She is going a hundred miles a minute as she tells about the work she does and her visions for future enterprises. Thumi comes across as someone who gets things done - without getting bogged down in questions of 'ideology'.
A lot of her work focuses on organising women - as someone who has had to fight her own battles with men, Thumi has realised the importance of women standing up for their rights. 'I realised that abuse of women was not just among poor women, but also happens to people like me'. She is a counsellor for the Mfekeng municipality, and member of the mayoral committee for arts, culture and sport, and holds responsibility for special projects. She is patron of prisoners of the North West. She believes an essential part of rehabilitation is to treat prisoners like human beings, no matter what they have done in the past. 'Too much talent is being wasted in South African prisons'.
