    de:Pilgerv ter The Pilgrims were a group of English religious separatists who sailed from Europe to North America in the early 17th century , in search of a home where they could freely practice their religion and live according to their own laws. The various members of the group had broken away from the Church of England , feeling that the Church had not completed the task begun by the Reformation . Under the guidance of the Reverends William Brewster and Richard Clifton, a portion of the group left their home in Scrooby, England and sailed to

    FATHERS IN NEW ENGLAND.
    And towns shoot up, and fertile realms are till'd;
    The land is full of harvests and green meads.
    BRYANT. THE breaking waves dash'd high
    On a stern and rock-bound coast,
    And the woods against a stormy sky
    Their giant branches toss'd; And the heavy night hung dark,
    The hills and waters o'er,
    When a band of exiles moor'd their bark
    On the wild New-England shore. [Page 265] Not as the conqueror comes,
    They, the true-hearted came; Not with the roll of the stirring drums, And the trumpet that sings of fame: Not as the flying come, They shook the depths of the desert gloom With their hymns of lofty cheer. Amidst the storm they sang, And the stars heard and the sea! And the sounding aisles of the dim woods rang To the anthem of the free. The ocean-eagle soar'd From his nest by the white wave's foam;

    Pilgrim Fathers
    Replica van de Mayflower De Pilgrim Fathers waren een groep religieuze separatisten die van Europa naar Amerika voeren in het begin van de 17e eeuw, op zoek naar een woonplaats waar zij hun religie vrij konden uitoefenen en volgens hun eigen wetten konden leven. De groepsleden hadden gebroken met de Engelse staatskerk , uit onvrede dat die de reformatie niet ver genoeg had doorgezet. Onder leiding van de dominees William Brewster en Richard Clifton verlieten zij hun huis in Scrooby, England en voeren naar Amsterdam om aan religieuze achtervolging in Engeland te ontkomen. Gedurende 12 jaar woonden ze in Leiden maar een aantal van hen besloten in , gedwongen door slechte economische omstandigheden en zorgen over de Nederlandse invloed op hun gemeenschap, om naar de Nieuwe Wereld te trekken. Minder dan de helft van de gemeenschap voer naar Southampton in het schip Speedwell , waar ze zich voegden bij een grotere groep separatisten. De twee groepen samen gingen vervolgens scheep in de Mayflower om de Atlantische Oceaan over te steken.

    92. A Pilgrim Guide To Educational Media & Media Literacy

    Greetings from Plymouth Rock!
    "Two disciples of Jesus that same day were making their way to a village name Emmaus...discussing as they went all that had happened. In the course of their lively exchange, Jesus approached and began to walk along with them. However, they were restrained from recognizing Him. He said to them, "What are you discussing as you go on you way?" They halted in distress, and one of them, Cleophas by name, asked Him, "Are you the only resident of Jerusalem who does not know the things that went on here these past few days?" He said to them, "What things?" (Lk 24:32-34)
    The first disciples were referred to as "Followers of the Way". It's not surprising, therefore, that this metaphor of traveljourneying to a destinationshould continue to appear throughout the Western tradition. Chaucer wrote his "Canterbury Tales" and Bunyan wrote about "Pilgrim's Progress". Why shouldn't Bill Gates then refer to "The Road Ahead"? The early settlers (First Comers) who were later referred to as "Pilgrims" arrived around 1620, as you know, in search of religious freedom. Today many churches are found in this town of Plymouth in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts which covers 103 sq. miles and includes 365 lakes, ponds, cranberry bogs, etc. My house is about 5 miles from Plymouth Rock downtown and four miles from the Atlantic Ocean and Plimouth Plantation which is a "living museum" re-creating the early explorer's settlement. I also live on the edge of the 15,000 acre Myles Standish State Forest. Obviously, our ancestors preserved many of the rustic elements that welcomed the first inhabitants.

    http://www.herodote.net/histoire11261.htm
    26 novembre 1620 avant après
    Ce jour-là...
    Le Mayflower et le Thanksgiving Day Le 26 novembre 1620, le Mayflower aborde en un lieu baptisé Plymouth, près de Cape Cod, sur la côte sauvage du Massachusetts.
    Ce voilier amène d'Angleterre 102 colons. Parmi eux, 35 protestants anglais très pieux, chassés de leur pays par les persécutions du roi Jacques 1er
    Europe inhospitalière
    Ces protestants se nomment «Pilgrim Fathers» ou Pères Pèlerins. Ils ont d'abord tenté leur chance aux Pays-Bas, à Leyde. Mais l'état de l'Europe les a déçus.
    En Angleterre, les troubles religieux laissent entrevoir la chute de la monarchie et la dictature de Cromwell. L'Allemagne souffre de la guerre de Trente Ans . En France, la régence troublée de Marie de Médicis fait suite à l'assassinat d'Henri IV...
    Le petit groupe d'Anglais a donc décidé de créer une «Nouvelle Jérusalem» en Amérique. C'est le moment où la Virginia Company organise le peuplement de la nouvelle colonie anglaise de Virginie (du nom de la reine Elizabeth 1ère
    Une destination imprévue
    Les Pères Pèlerins ont embarqué en septembre 1620 à Plymouth sur le Mayflower (ou Fleur de Mai ), un voilier de 180 tonnes.
